David Foster is best known for producing Pop records but back in the 1970s, he was a gigging musician in a band called "Skykark".

They wrote a nugget of a song titled "Wildflower". IMO, the best version of that song was recorded by New Birth.

But yeah, David Foster was a dawg on keys before he turned into the Krispy Kreme man. laughcool

How many keyboards have used a sequence of that Olympics tune as a built-in demo?

Itís hard to disrepect highly skilled pop craftsmanship, but I never forgave him from turning Chicago, my favorite band of my 1970s youth, into Air Supply.

Chicago begged him to do it and they had no problem cashing the checks.

Well, not the horn players in Chicago, if we're being accurate. snax

Love him or hate him, the manís got mad skills.

I agree with the Chicago thing. I love that band up until Chicago VIII. But yeah, they needed hits and hits they got with his Midas, albeit wonder-bread bland, touch.

Yes, I agree he has the skills. And much of his music to me is bland. But he is 69 and engaged to Katherine McPhee, so what do I know? Bring on, the cheese. I think it maybe time to start using my FM EP patches.

I think you might need to revisit Chicago 16. Those chord changes and modulations are anything but ďbland.Ē

Yeah I mean he got them all together and remembered half their music that they didn't. Whether or not you like the finished product he did give Chicago a shot in the arm. He does admit in retrospect he might have softened their sound too much but to have a second coming when the band was in their mid to late 30's was pretty amazing at that time.

Lol, this thread went about how I expected it would.

Let's just say that anyone who learns from Tommy Banks and Ronnie Hawkins can't be all bad. Svengle 'em if you don't know.

While I'll admit that I'm sometimes guilty of letting my distaste for some of his cheesier pop output color my perceptions of his undeniable skills, it's hard for me to say I'm sorry.

Badass video, thanks for sharing. I was (and still am) a fan of Foster, mostly around his soundtrack work.

I did. I dig it.

Now, we join our Chicago rant, already in progress.

Now Eric, you've been here long enough to realize that the more time that you spend with old folks, the more you will need to develop a sense of patience. smile

And yet...............they still ca$hed them, didn't they. They just moan(ed) about it afterwards a lot.

To be fair, listening to those two huge Foster-produced 80's albums (16 & 17) is funny - most of the time the horn section is either doing nothing (or probably playing synths, if I remember correctly) and when they do appear it sounds really forced. Like Foster felt pressure to add a horn lick here and there so it didn't sound completely like a Peter Cetera solo album just yet.

I'm a sucker for 70's and 80's L.A. AOR / "yacht rock" type of stuff so all that is alright with me.

Foster became a major part of the L.A. "wrecking crew" along with all the guys from Toto, guys like Champlin, Tom Scott, Phillinganes, Jerry Hey, Larry Williams etc. and especially Jay Graydon who I think was his writing/producing partner as well.

I recommend checking out Discogs for the stuff he just played keyboards on, before he became the mega-producer he became. Most of the time he's found on sessions with the same guys mentioned above on stuff like Quincy Jones' albums.

Plus, without him we probably wouldn't have "FosterPno" as a preset or an entity, really... laugh

ALSO - he has written some incredible songs. Just listen to the chord harmony and the rhythm arrangement on this. It's as far from bland as you can get (if you get past Loggins).

I remember his name mainly from his credits on Lee Ritenour's 1981 album "Rit", where he produced and played keyboards on some of the songs.

But I suspect the line-up on that album was a typical "L.A. Wrecking Crew" affair... in fact Ritenour himself classifies as such as musician, in league with many of those names mentioned by BRW.

Wow, that Kenny Loggins track is just spectacular. Might cop a few changes from that.
