wink

What dear old DAD once claimed about a particularly cold night, and with -40 wind chills in many parts of the country( here in the "D" anyway....), that claim can TRULY be made! laugh

Hope any others here that are experiencing this latest "Polar Vortex" are holding up well. At least this year( so far, and knock wood) my windshield washer fluid didn't FREEZE SOLID! wink

This is 1 of the top reasons I moved from Chicago to CA back in 1977.

I been inside for most of past couple weeks recovering from emergency surgery to remove a bloodclot or two from my left leg main artery. Working from home until I get OK to return to office. I dodged a bullet. Very lucky emergency 1 at 8:30 PM transfer to Ann Arbor St. Joe's by 10 PM in surgery by 10 AM. Almost 0 pain and healing fast. This is helping me decide to retire sooner than later. Jim

The last time there was a Polar Vortex, I was in my homeland of Minnesota doing a martial arts seminar. When the government in Minnesota shuts down things, you know it`s bad. Still, we had a good turnout. I thanked everyone for risking their lives to be there.

These temps ar no joke, y’all. Stay safe! I lost one of my 9 lives in weather like this.

My family lived in Manhattan, KS during a polar vortex event back in the early 1980s. I was 8th or 9th grade that year. I remember watching news footage about Alaskan and Canadian cities being so cold that their thermometers had bottomed out, and things like engines and their block heaters were shattering.

WE got to -53F. School was closed early in anticipation of blizzard conditions, so we all got on our respective busses and headed home. During the trip, some bullies threw my gloves out of the window. My bus stop was at the bottom of a hill, and our house was 2nd or 3rd from the top- but that was just 4 or 5 from the bottom, so not much of a walk, right?

My backpack was full of books, and so were my arms. My cowboy boots weren’t getting good traction, so I fell several times on the sidewalk, sliding downhill a few feet each time. I finally wised up and started walking on the lawns. But the snow was already over a foot deep on the grass, so progress- while steady- was slow.

By the time I got to my front door, my feet were numb. Worse, my hands were incapable of moving. I couldn’t let go of my books to dig in my pockets for my key; I couldn’t ring the doorbell.

So I started kicking the door and yelling until my folks opened the door,

My Dad- an MD- knew what to do. With help from Mom, he held my hands under cold running water- it felt like it was full-on hot to my frostbitten skin. I stayed home more than a week, recovering.

To this day, my hands are extra-sensitive to cold weather.

Minnesota got hit real hard too.One day up there somewhere it got to -75 degrees BEFORE the "wind chill" reading! shocked

And really, the term wind "CHILL" seems to be putting it TOO nicely crazy

Although I feel for you cold country dwellers, I don't want to share your pain......

This is the reason I live near or below the line that is drawn from Jacksonville Florida to Los Angeles California. All of my beloved family lives on the East Coast in New Jersey or near Philly, & most of my lifelong friends live on the east coast. I live here mostly because I don't like cold weather. Whatever is above that imaginary line from Jax to LA is of no interest to me as a place to live.....

My water pipes come up from the ground outside my little mobile home, never once have they frozen, although I insulated them this year, for the past 20 or so years they were never insulated and although it got below freezing once in a while in the dead of night, just keeping the water running was all that was necessary.

I know people get used to humid and tropical climates/areas...I can't take it. Hot and cold temps are bad enough... cool

Depends....

Those in SouthEAST Michigan would say, "Ohio"! wink laugh

And in South WEST MI, it's Indiana! wink

DIRECTLY( and geographically) it would be that little "upturned" peninsula of Southeast MEXICO. wink and quite a distance too.

Sub-zero temps to spring-like weather then back again, plenty of snow, and now ice storms. Business as usual here on the south side of Chicago.

The road buckling from the drastic temp changes should have the pot-hole and road construction season in full bloom this year.

Windsor. As in Ontario. As in Canada.

Not to compare our weather in Hawaii with -50, but did have some crazy weather. 191 mph wind gusts at the top Mauna Kea on the big island, snow on Maui and 60 ft surf on the North Shore of Oahu.
