I had a pretty sweet gig lined up for tomorrow at a venue that's affiliated with the National Park Service. And when I say "affiliated," I mean apparently that's where their funding comes from. A few days ago the band got a notice that while we could still do the gig if we like, they wouldn't actually be able to complete the minor detail of paying us until the park service is up and running again. So we opted to postpone the gig indefinitely rather than go with the "we will gladly pay you on whatever day the government gets its $#!+ together for a performance today" plan.

Anyone else been furloughed from a (music) gig these past almost-three weeks?

You are now the first person I know personally who has been affected by this. Congrats! freak

The great thing about music is that there's always something to learn. The frustrating thing about music is that there's always something to learn!

Same here. You are the first impacted that I know of. My youngest is in college. I thought perhaps her federal student loan process would get honked up but so far I've heard of nothing.

One of my band mates has been furloughed. He says he's enjoying an extended holiday by spending his days practicing. Doesn't seem too concerned.

I don't know anyone that has been affected, but I certainly feel for all the people who have been. Listening to their stories on NPR has been pretty sobering about how great it is when you are not living paycheck to paycheck. I have been in that position at points in my life and it's quite stressful.

I got furloughed 3 times while working for the US EPA. If you've got the financial cushion, it's an extra paid holiday. History teaches that you have to plan for this sort of thing if you can. Many can not.

If you're a contractor, like TAFKAFKS, it's a tougher situation.

I now do similar work for a Bay Area local agency. No furloughs, no partisan politics.

Bummer. When I had just read your subject title, I thought it must be a gig at the Mint, or maybe a gig with Sunpie. Was I right?

During the previous gov't shutdown under a different adinistration, JA's band Organissimo had a gig cancelled at the Smithsonian Institute here in the swamp. Made it up about a year later. Was a great show. twothumbs

Can I be the 2nd? This isnít affecting my personal finance, just work. I had a 12/27/18 call scheduled with an NEA program manager. Cancelled due to shutdown. An annual NEA grant application window in February may be pushed back if the shutdown continues.

A guitarist I play with has day gig in fed law enforcement. He's furloughed no pay. Thankfully wife is a nurse, they'll make the mortgage this month. Next month will be interesting.

If this thing goes for another few weeks, it's safe to say we all will either be affected or know someone who is.

If I was working for no pay, or furloughed, my evenings would be spent sending out as many resumes as I could find destinations for. Heck I'm sending them out for less reason.

I don't want to get into politics here, and am not taking a stand, but am just going to comment that I'm surprised how many people say they haven't been impacted yet. My housemates can't cover their portion of the rent this month as they haven't been paid.

I was furloughed at end-of-year but that's true most years as it's inefficient for manufacturing to open for a day or two at a time when holidays are mid-week. So I doubt it's related. But it might have also been pre-emptive, hedging bets in case of a later impact.

Gig-wise, this is already looking to be the best in several years, as I already have ten lined up for the next few weeks.

Got several contractor friends who are SOL.

This may impact my job too, soon. I'm planning a work trip to do field recording in a certain national park. We have to submit our application advance for permission to film. This is in late March, but if things continue, we may not get our paperwork done in time. This trip could make a lot of money for my business.

Good luck to you, Eric. That's a tough one. I know how long that process can be for permits. I was unsuccessful on one foreign visit due to the long list of bureaucratic requirements and the clock ticking, combined with frequent and unexpected "days off" for those in positions of authority, or strikes, or government shutdowns, or what have you (this doesn't happen only in the USA).
