Loc: Waialua, Hi
Taking my Grandpa to see Al Jardine the 20th, it will be about 54 years since the 1st time he saw the Beach Boys. An early 67th birthday gift. My friends and I are going to see John Sebastian on the 30th and Alvin Bishop in July. All shows are at the Blue Note in Honolulu.

+1 Have a great time Surfergirl! I know your Granpa is really going to enjoy the show...there's going to be some super musical talent up there on the stage. Don't forget to report back and let us all know how it all went! cool

That is great! What a wonderful Birthday Present that you're giving your Grandpa. cool And Elvin Bishop- what a fantastic, classic, legendary singer, songwriter, guitarist and performer. "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it on FM radio late at night when I was a ten year old kid (it was a brand new song then)...

Well, since her grandpa is roughly the same age as I am( and many of us here, too! wink ) we'd ALL enjoy THAT show!

Oh, and CAEVAN? To most of us old "BLUESIES", "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" was a disappointment to those of us familiar with Elvin's history as an artist. We were actually MORE thrilled that AL KOOPER had the good sense to ask HIM to fill in for MIKE BLOOMFIELD when Mike's insomnia caused him to temporarily "bow out" part way during those "The Live Adventures Of Mike Bloomfield And Al Kooper" recording gigs(along with Carlos Santana and Steve Miller). Here's EVLIN's contribution:

And before that with Paul Butterfield's band.
He's still around. A friend of mine worked on a video with Elvin recently, & his 335 was leaning up against the living room wall, looking very well used.

Yeah, we knew Elvin was with Butterfield, it's HOW we came to agree he was a good "stand-in" for the ailing Bloomfield. wink

And since I'm waxing "dementia/nostalgic" about old blues guys, whatever happened to THESE guys? (remember them?)

All 3 are worthy performers.

Jardine has always been a significant member of that band
& is one of the 3 main members still living.
He did lead vox on "Help Me, Rhonda" & other tracks
& can be recognized by the slight nasal tinge of his vox.
He also did some of the arraging & even production w/ the band.
I think this clip actually presents "Rhonda" in a clearer arrangement, for both vox & instruments, than the official recording.

FWIW, it's sorta seems he's more aligned w?Brian Wilson than the nostalgia-oriented version of the BBs that Mike Love keeps dragging around.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Many of us remember Sebastian for the LSpoonful's 1960s hits but he did lots of other stuff, some you might not believe, like this track, where he's blowing that harmonica. thu

Here's a number (co-written w/ the Late Great Lowell George) from later in his career that I've always found affecting.

---------------------------------

Elvin B ?
Like his cohort Mike Bloomfield there was/is much more to this cat than it seems.
He met the Butterfield-Bloomfield crew when he moved from Cali to attend the U of Chicago as a National Merit Scholar studying physics !

Old days
Here he is playing all the gtr parts (no Mikey B)

Stardays
This is my fave of his 1970s radio hits
It's heavily un-PC but is a terminally catchy groove
+ it seems to feature Dickey Betts's Mini-Me on 2nd gtr
not just in looks but in playing technique !

Nowadaze
He's still "Pigboy"

Many of us "boomers" recall it was John who brought THIS do-job to our attention.
Not a NEW innovation in music, but rarely(if ever) seen and heard thing to any "Yankees" not raised with any country/western music influence. wink

Thanks, Fang, for the links.
While I personally wonder at the continued use of the term "autoharp" for an instrument that requires the player to manipulate it's operation that's for others to settle later.
My point was that JS was & remains an example of a performer & composer that went far beyond the generally recognized.

S'OK. It was a "not bad" pop tune, but when you take to someone early on in their career, it's hard to see them go "astray". wink

.....Like THIS guy did here....

https://www.songfacts.com/facts/elvin-bishop/fooled-around-and-fell-in-love <---a little song history on Fooled Around. I thought it was a well written tune by EB, with a little story to it...the guitar lead was cool too! cool

So, who IS left from The Beach Boys?

JARDINE, LOVE and BRIAN WILSON?

By now, they should just call themselves "The PORCH Guys"! wink laugh

I don't think they ever rode any waves or got off of the porch, but they sure played the music to ride them to back in my surfing days...Glen Campbell playing with them as a Beach Boy was a part of their history I really enjoyed hearing... cool

I think Bruce Johnston still does the gig.
I saw Brian Wilson a few years back, sharing a bill with Jeff Beck. He had Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston & Blondie Chaplin with him, which is as close to the real Beach Boys as you're likely to get these days.

Original is not the same as real.
Sometimes it's more real than y'yet been been.
& when ya speak of "going astray"...if only.
Jardine's worth 6 Myke Gloves.
Ruff but tuff.
