Thank for sharing this
I like the intimacy of the small house and the audience just right there. And both he and the band, sound fantastic

And yeah, that's Ron Avant on keys.

BTW, the Free Nationals are also releasing an album right away. That's the band, minus Paak, plus the regular DJ, Callum Connor.

Yep. I dig the vibe A.Paak brings as a musician/singer/MC. Definitely a refreshing approach to Hip-Hop. thu cool

That's Ron Avant a bad dude on keys! He played with Snoop for a min and we crossed paths a couple years ago when he was playing with Debarge down here on the same bill as a band I was playing with. That was right before Anderson Paak happened.

And only just now did I make the damn connection that AP is Breezy Lovejoy who I played with a bunch in the late '00s in LA! Doh!!!

Haha me too! I met him once around 10 years ago - 2008. A friend of mine who also happened to be a pastor hosted this informal community music night event at his church, I think i played a song or two, and I met this kid in the corner sitting at a drum kit, he told me his name was Breezy Lovejoy - he was kind of quiet and unassuming, but had this youthful confidence about him, I think he might have played a song or two, decent but kinda low-key. About 5 years ago (2013), I went to some music showcase at the Troubador and some guy named Anderson Paak had a guest spot and performed (and was definitely not low key!). I Googled this Anderson guy after I saw the show and it mentioned he went by the name "Breezy Lovejoy" and went all, "WHUUUUUUUUUT?!?!?"

I enjoyed that on several levels:
1. Hip-hop is so much more enjoyable (to me) on live instruments instead of loops
2. The intimacy of a compact, low-volume gig
3. His blending/interpolation of the middle ground between singing and rap
4. The guy's sheer charisma!

Thanks for posting.

Cheers, Mike.

First time I saw him, he was opening at the Temple Bar (when it was still open. Or it may have been Zanzibar) for Jesse Boykins. It's crazy that Breezy blew up and Jesse still remains fairly obscure. Guess it really is who you know.

It's in my queue, along with 150 other new releases that I have to get through before the end of the year.
