I met a kid working as a construction helper who loves making music. He wrote a song for my friend who just lost her husband. & I was impressed with his construction & melody. When I reached out I learned he has an old Mac w/FLstudio, a cheap 49 note board & an old copy of Omnisphere I. He is hardly well off, and has had to save up for everything he has for music. I was wondering what folks here might recommend for free or nearly free virtual instruments.
Thx
Steve

I have not used it, but have heard decent things about Piano in 162 by Ivy Audio. They have a Kontakt version as well as a SFZ version for use in Plogue Sforzando, which is a free sampler.

Off the top of my head:
MrTrump EP
Cheeze Machine synth
ComboF and ComboV (they were free back in the day, i don't know if they still exist as freebies)
4Front acoustic bass

These ones come to mind as far as free VST's
There is also this and similar sites that could help this guy: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-vst-plugins/

BTW, it's very polity of yours trying to help this young guy. God bless

Two easy-to-learn synths from U-He with excellent sound quality ...

Tyrell N6 Covers a lot of VA needs
Zebralette Basically one oscillator of Zebra for free.

I'm very impressed with a free OBX/other oberheim plugin:

OBXD

Also, for FM DX7-style sounds there is Dexed, which iirc comes with a metric ton of DX7 presets.

Don't forget delay and reverb, which can of course make a huge difference. There are various free plugins of different types (plate, halls etc).

Unfortunately, I also downloaded the demo to uh-e's Repro (1 and 5)...prophet 5 emulation. These are NOT free, more's the pity grin

Holey moley does that thing sound GREAT. I was all set to really stick with Alchemy and other built-in plugins in Logic Pro, but Repro is a cut above sonically at least in my brief tests. Just made me want to play, and a sure sign that something sounds good is that you can play way less and just enjoy the sound....

And speaking of u-he, Triple Cheese makes some very exciting noises. Simple yet powerful, and free.

All of these are free and worth having. Spitfire Audio is continually adding to this list:

Dexed is a great FM synth which loads DX7 patches and acts as a patch editor/librarian for a DX. https://asb2m10.github.io/dexed/

Also love this free JX plugin PG-8X which sounds wonderful. https://sites.google.com/site/mlvst0/pg8x-2

Any Computer Music magazine that you can get from Barnes and Noble has a DVD with it. It includes several freeware instruments and effects of high quality.
