We could debate "pop" music(again!) till the cows come home and still settle nothing. It is after all, subjective and a matter of personal likes and dislikes. And the diversity of ages and tastes in this forum means any concensus on the topic will be hard to come by.

I'm not a fan of the original Taylor Swift song, but Big Money did a good job with it.

 

Pop music - or any kind of music - either you like it or you don't. The following song was recently the #1 song physical single seller in the UK for a couple of weeks. Is that enough for it to be a pop song? Or for it to translate to a slew of radio plays there, or anywhere else? Being an indie band I'll bet the latter is a no.

 

But couldn't it? Shouldn't it?

I'm showing my age here. My opinion, but I think pop music for the most part (there have been exceptions of course) hasn't been very impressive since the 70s. Once we got into the 80s it really started to become formulized and it has lost much of it's heart and soul. That being said, much of pop music in the 50s and early 60s was very formulized also. Once the late 60s and 70s arrived pop and rock blossomed together to create in my opinion the greatest decade of popular music ever. Did I mention that this was just my opinion? I don't want to offend anybody.

If you're referring to the decade from , say, '67-'77, it doesn't offend ME, I might even say I agree.

 

Of course, there's always a bit of "bleeding" from one decade to another. Or, a "cusp" if you will.... ;)

For anyone wondering about the new Brian Moore iGuitar, this was its first outing. The Synth Lead sounds are what you're listening for, nothing that sounds like Rock Guitar.

You should check out willanacademy.com. The content on the site is very informative and allows you to have direct contact with Music Industry Professionals and other artist. When ever you want to learn something all you have to do is leave a comment on what your interested in any music field and they will get back to you.

Hi everyone

This is the foundation of a song in progress. It`s from a good friend of mine in Sweden, he deserves a big thanks for making it available. Last year he sent it to me, he plays guitar as well but he asked me to have a go and see what I could come up with. Last weekend I finally got into the studio. He asked me to record as clean as possible, it may be a bit hard to hear what`s going on. I recorded three tracks, a strummed rhythm track, an arpeggiated part played with fingers only, and then I sprinkled some leads over it. Later my friend will remix and add a vocal track, with he took out so I could get a better listen. Can`t wait to hear the final mix, meanwhile hope you enjoy this version.

Great gtr work, Skip, esp the faster lines that occur in spots [1:38; 1:54; 2:00; 2:12].

Did you do the chordal beds, too ?

 

Much diff from the kinda folkish stuff I heard before, which was also good but didn't suggest this aspect of yer range.

Nice jazzy vibe (kinda like some stuff I heard by Mike Stern last year---not imitative but offbeat melodically for EDM & such, IMO).

 

From yer OP on the main page, I wonder abt the stuff w/kb...or were you playing gtr sounds via kb ?

Depending on the goal of the actual artist, I'd say the gtr might be just a touch higher in mix or maybe variable in loudness at spots but that kick is really just a bit too strong...& I'm listening on gear that doesn't even emphasize low end the way a lotta stuff does.

Thanks for the careful listen and thoughtful comments as always. Yes all the audible guitar sounds are by me. My bud did originally have a bit of chordal stuff going on but it was extremely low in the mix and is not a presence at all in what you hear. As mentioned, there are three parts interweaving. Once my bud does his remixing magic, I`m sure the rough spots will be sanded down.

This is actually closer to my foundations on guitar than the acoustic sounds I`ve been doing in recent years. I was surprised at how much work it took to get my electric legs under me again.

Thank ya sir-ya, generally if it`s my song I play everything except drums. If the keys or bass require a specialist I`ll invite a guest. Anyway this is my friend`s song, it was sent to me partly completed. I also have a version with the vocal track but, it was easier to get a feel for the music without it.

Most definitely! nicely played and recorded.

I must say, the vocals are fine but to be honest, sound a little out of place for this kind of music. I could see a Dokken-like sound balancing well. This music needs power and projection.

Taking the easy way in, I'm checking the "Listen", uh, list a few at a time.

Enemy : the staggered bit that starts at :40 is my preferred section (FWIW :rolleyes:).

All well played & recorded but I really like the drum-work---the rolling thunder of what seems the intro, the tripping roll at :21, etc.

Does that person devise their own parts ?

An axiom from one of my past cohorts is that the drummer can do more to control the perceived quality of rock ensembles than other members, even though that's often a subconscious perception.

 

Tangentially, the site's impressive at 1st visit.

I may try to steal some of yer ideas !

You mentioned other projects.

What ?

This is my only original project, I sit in with various cover bands - keys and guitar in one, acoustic bass on another, occasionally sax.

 

The one guitar player is the primary writer and writes all of the lyrics and the basic song structure, then the rest of the band embellishes each of their parts, writes their own solos, etc. as far as the drums, in rehearsal, he'll try out different things and get feedback. Sometimes the songwriter wants something specific, other times he's flexible.

 

It's definitely a concept album, in fact the first 5 songs actually all run together with no gaps. What you miss in the little samples we put in the site are all of the changes and song transitions going on. There are parts of sings that if we put them up you would think is a completely different song, and other cases when if you listened to them together, would think 2 songs are 1. Enemy at the Gates is like that. It really is almost more of an extended intro to Blessed Curses, which takes a very different turn at the end of the song before going into Evilution.

 

I know what you're saying about the vocals. Part of that is by design. We wanted to differentiate our sound a bit. No Drop D tuning, no Cookie Monster vocals, add keyboards and lots of harmonies. Hopefully the result will be a distinctive recognizable sound. Whether folks like it or not is yet to be seen, but in reality, none of us expect any kind of success from this. I make money from the cover bands and my day job. This is just a creative outlet for my own enjoyment.

Oh, also on the vocals, in my opinion they used too much effects on the recording which washed it out a bit. Live it's much more raw. I've known the singer for a long time and he's always put a lot of effects on vocals - he and the bass player did most of the mixdown. I did manage to talk him into dialing back some of the effects in a few spots.

Richie is the one who writes the songs. Both guitar players solo - sometimes harmonized solos, sometimes individual solos. Besides the singer, Richie, Dave, and I sing backups. As I mentioned Singer and Bass player handled most of the recording/mixdown. The bass player works at a company called ITC that does a lot of production work and has a studio - that's where we recorded. Richie did all of the artwork for the CD and web site and is making the shirts (he works at a shop that makes shirts, which is where we practice as well).

 

The band actually got together 20 years ago (minus me) and eventually broke up. They just reunited 2 years ago and started writing these songs. I didn't join until about 8 months ago, so on most of the songs I was either adding keys after the fact or playing parts that were already written. I really only was part of the full songwriting process on about 2 of the songs but so far at the live shows people are saying that the keys have a big impact on the overall sound and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
