The setup for Bruno Mars's keyboard player. Anyone recognize those gold stands?

I have a video I might post later, where the band left the stage and he did an unaccompanied 5 minute solo to intro "Grenade."

The show kicked ass. Since I'm an old codger that never goes to these kinds of events, I can't compare it with others at this level but the lights, video, pyro, etc. were pretty amazing to me. And the guy can sing, dance, play guitar, and as I mentioned in another thread seems pretty down to earth.

Looks like components used to build custom drum racks like these .

Congrats on sharing the bill with Bidule, controller and a Nord 5D. I am sure you nailed it sounded equally as good.

mul - feel free to share. Here's another one, not as good but might give a little more info:

Markay - thanks! I'm not sure how well we nailed it, but it was different from our usual type of gig, that's for sure. My first time with wireless in-ears and no way to adjust my own level in my ears.

The Nord was there as insurance. As I detailed in my usual long-winded way on another thread here, our UK tech man was nervous about my rig based on an incident on our last UK tour (in Glasgow, coincidentally) where my USB cord was too short for the big stage, so I added an extension cable and things did not work out too well (this was during sound check and I corrected the issue for the show by moving my laptop closer to me and eliminating the extension). Anyway, I didn't really need the Nord at all my Roland was hooked up with a 35 foot midi cable this time but I comped a bit on it for show!

Rob I'm guessing you were too low in the mix in your in ears, but as you are a consumate pro it will all have been good, and as local heroes AWB would have been warmly received.

Very cool Rob!

I'm also out of the loop on current pop, but anytime I've seen Bruno Mars on a TV special I've been very impressed. Talented guy and great showman. It's great to hear that he's also a cool guy.

I think they're Ultimate Support System stands. I seem to recall seeing color versions of their stand at NAMM a few years ago and in this link (scroll down) it appears Howard Jones in using something similar. Awesome post Rob - thanks!

Those are nothing more than custom painted USS stands; AX48Pro (Apex) column stands, and V-Stands.

I know very little about Bruno Mars (being somewhat of an old codger myself), but if his keyboard player sports a C3 I will definitely give him a listen.

I'm guessing all of the KBs are required primarily to minimize having to change sounds between songs.

Otherwise, the Kronos, Juno 106 and Moog could cover all of the KB parts for the whole gig. laughcool

I would go so far as to argue that just the Kronos could handle the gig if you had some controllers for a little more keyboard real estate.

Yes, USS stands painted. I don't keep up with stand designs. I did recognize the Apex but the V-stands didn't look familiar havent run into any in the wild myself. You're talking to a single-brace X-stand guy here! I'm guessing these are gold to go along with the "24K" song theme!

As to the # of keyboards I might agree that what we see in this setup may not be absolutely necessary to cover the gig but I'll guess that given the enormous amount of gear this stage entails, especially the video & pyro, it's probably not that much more trouble to haul these guys around. And the budget is there, so why not? It's not like they have to conserve space on stage!

thu

Also it could be about gear redundancy and performance ergonomics (the patch changes profd mentioned). I'd love to read an interview about how the rig evolved.

When I saw the 60 Minutes piece on Bruno around the time 24k Magic was coming out, he had a ton of classic synths in his studio. I'm sure it has to do with that, and wanting many of the originals live. I'd share a link but CBS keeps that locked down except for subscribers from what I've found so far.

Haaaa, finaly someone who is not trying to shrink down his rig...I'm close, 6 Keys and some rackmountable gear as well...And yes, no stress with too much program changes when you have redundancy...
I think it's a 1 guy station? Well, maybe not, we have 4 Bruno Mars song in our current setlist of pure Funk/Dance repertoire and I agree, sometime, I cannot play all the keys parts...
But there is still something missing in his rig...a bit of Nord Red...

Bruno has one keyboard player. It's certainly possible that there are keyboard parts on tracks though.

In the left side of the 2nd photo it looks like there's one keyboard facing the opposite direction -- so maybe someone else adds some other parts?

I noticed that too. I wasn't close enough to the stage to see if it was set up somewhere else. It could have been like that temporarily as the risers are rolled out. I don't remember seeing anyone else playing a keyboard. Maybe it was for an offstage keys player??

I believe John Fossitt mainly holds down the KB chair by himself. However, there are probably backing tracks in the mix too. cool

My guess would be that the other keyboard would be for another band member or Bruno to play a part for a song or two. Sometimes in some bands, the bassist will play a synth bass part, or the singer will play keys for a bit. It might be something like that.
