We dont have a thread for the random items that arent worth their own thread, or are just quick ideas or thoughts you want to convey. We do now!

Just found this on Twitter:

Howard Jones - New Song improvisation Part 1

Is a random thought in a thread intended for it, still random?

It doesnt matter which way I insert a USB plug, it will be wrong on the first try.

I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

Same here. Sideways, right side up. Always wrong on the 1st try. sometimes more so, with bad aim.

Even if there were minuscule directional symbols I would ignore that

My very observant son taught me that horizontal USB's are always "open" side up. (The little metal windows should be the open ones, not the blocked-off ones.)

I'm currently on the road. The highway is punctuated regularly by signs that say "overtaking permitted when safe". Those last two words seem superfluous to me.

A polygamnist has multiple wives (or husbands). Is one who marries Siamese twins a paragamist?

Just asking.

Is marrying Siamese twins a really good idea or a really bad idea?

From the king of random thoughts, George Carlin:

The reason I talk to myself is because Im the only one whose answers I accept.

Here's all you have to know about men and women: women are crazy, men are stupid. And the main reason women are crazy is that men are stupid.

Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house.

There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.

Some people see things that are and ask, Why?
Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not?
Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that.

I like it when a flower or a little tuft of grass grows through a crack in the concrete. It's so f*ckin' heroic.

Meow means woof in cat.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Scratch any cynic and you will find a disappointed idealist.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, 'Where's the self-help section?' She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Some people see the glass half full. Others see it half empty. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be.

I had the bad luck to be driving on the freeway today and it was a cluster(bleep) of people who reminded me of this.

"Mother thrived. Promotions, raises, all manner of good fortune came her way, seemingly without any effort on her part at all. She was, in fact, protected by the ancient, nameless force that weaves itself around the destinies of but a few. Those few being the truly, stultifyingly f**k-stupid. If Mother stumbled in the street, it would be on a bar of gold. Whoever walked behind her would be decapitated by a crashing aircraft in her stead. She truly walked between the raindrops. All near her- from the crippled orphan to the saintly brain surgeon- were showered in lumps of toxic excrement. That one happened."
~ Garth Ennis, "The Boys"

Does anyone else ever play The Tennessee Waltz? Its a song about how you're on a date, run into a friend, the friend dances with your date, steals your date out from under you.

I was dancin' with my darlin to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see.
I introduced him to my darlin' and while they were dancin'
My friend stole my sweetheart from me.
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have lost
Yes, I lost my little darlin' the night they were playin'
That beautiful Tennessee Waltz

What I want to know is if the name of this song about the incident is The Tennessee Waltz, yet they were dancing to The Tennessee Waltz in the song, how did that song go?

On Saturday, my fairly new Rode M1 microphone just failed to work. Never been dropped, not a mark on it, pop screens since I bought it.

Ive never had a mic do this before. Anyone?

"Antibacterial soap" is NOT redundant. "Soap" only refers to a substances ability to break surface tension.

If you are right-handed, you should be able to write fairly well with your left hand if you write backward while also writing normally with your right (like a mirror image). Now I want a lefty reversed MIDI keyboard.

I'd rather be hit by 100 guitar pick-sized pianos than by a piano-size guitar pick.

"For instance" is not proof.

LOL. Takes a little bit of practice. I learned to do it in 4th grade from a teacher who was INSANE about DaVinci who originated it (urban legend...just reporting my experience).

A reminder, kids, to register your products! By registering this microphone at the time of purchase I receive lifetime warranty on this mic. I just have to pay shipping to get it to them.

Yay!

Okay, fine...I get it...you had a poor harvest in the fall, followed by a hard winter. Near the end of winter, you run out of decent food and have to go dig up food that's partially decomposed in order to survive. You do what you gotta do to survive. I get that part.

But to willingly eat it later, when things aren't so bad?

Really?

Strange dream- I went to get my haircut, usual place. When I got there the owner (Korean guy who usually cuts my hair) said it would be a long wait as they had a group of Australian visitors ahead of me; Markay, CowboyNQ and about 6 others were present. After waiting a while all of a sudden these guys along with all the Korean barbers start singing the Australian national anthem, a pretty good song I concocted in my dream or so it seemed at the time.

Anyway I was extremely agitated that they were adding to my wait time. Still haven't gotten over it. saber grin

The size and skin tone relationship between his hands and head - what is going on there? And you thought Trump had tiny hands - I'll bet this guy can fit his own fist in his mouth. You just don't see that every day. And does he wear gloves when he's at the beach?

Apologies Mark. But as you now know, Aussies and Koreans love a national anthem sing along when we get together. Thanks for writing it by the way, good tune - had "soul".

Subject change: Road train drivers literally carry a heavy responsibility to drive thoughtfully. I saw one nearly side swipe a driver of a small sedan yesterday in an effort to overtake where there simply wasn't room.

Ok, off to admire my new haircut..

'A Cluster F***' - Definition of: When enlisted men are sent to the front by a general or generals (or admirals?) that have earned their gold leaf clusters that they wear on their uniforms....(no skata ) ....now don't we all just feel a bit stupid (I did), most of the world thinks of an orgy scene of some sort, I found that a bit unpleasant, I have to good of an imagination for a Yankee! We can all relax now and breath a sigh of relief, it doesn't actually have to do with sex at all for the most part. . .

Actually a bit more serious if your even near a military front and in the service....live and learn, my friend told me who was in the Navy.

and there is also this, another common misnomer:
Can Opener Dyslexia . . . .

and finally there is this for no apparent reason other than this which got my octaves ringing a bit...I'm sure she can help beginners find middle C:

LOL. Takes a little bit of practice. I learned to do it in 4th grade from a teacher who was INSANE about DaVinci who originated it (urban legend...just reporting my experience).

I'm fairly ambidextrous. I can write/draw mirrored or synchronized.

Didnt know where to drop this, but it must be seen. Thought about posting it in the guitar forum, but:

1) I dont know anyone over there.
2) Who cares what guitarists think?

Its a great reminder of what a monster player Steve Howe is. He captures Les Pauls style perfectly.

Edit to add: it also may be the only time Ive ever seen him jolly and playful. He has always seemed so dour and serious to me.

I was pleased to see Steve forgoing his pretty strict no handshakes rule for Les.

I saw LP play the Iridium shortly before he passed. He was still doing two shows on a weekday night. His son, who looked pretty damned old himself, was running the board and handling the tee shirt sales.
Les, crippled with arthritis, told more stories than he played, which was just fine with everyone in the audience. After all, there were not many people alive to tell of being babysat by W.C. Fields and getting stinking drunk with Bing Crosby.

Now there are probably none.

YouTube has a bunch of Les Paul with videos, most of them pretty good. The best, after this Steve Howe, might be the Larry Carlton one, with an outstanding female bassist, Nicki Parrot. Theres also Dickey Betts, Brian May, Slash, ZZ Top, Joe Walsh, Zack Wylde, Chuck Mangione.

Gino Vannelli is on tour, and if youre in the Washington/Maryland area (November 11, Annapolis), someone in the Facebook Gino Fans group has to sell their good seats, with no markup:

If you go, you wont be disappointed. Im thinking of going to the Atlanta show on February 15.

thanks, but the link didn't work for me. Maybe one needs to be in that fan club. The show in Annapolis MD is sold out.

I dont believe you need to be invited if you wanted to join it to connect with this woman, then leave the group. She says she has to be out of town for work on the 11th.

Here's a random thought rant:

I really dislike people who don't keep their word. It's happened often during the last few years, and even during this holiday season... to the point of sheer disgust.

Have you seen in a hospital one of those face-based pain scales - for example:

Based on this one, I've never been better than "hurts little bit."
I think 0 is there just so they know whether they're giving us too much meds

I'm probably the only one on this forum who thinks this way - - I've never been a big fan of Steve Howe's playing. The song orchestration and parts, that's obviously great, and Yes music is iconic. But a lot of his solos and general playing, seems very painful and not so much for me. If you want some effortless picking style shredding, here you go.

Apple Warns Customers to Stop Using Some MacBook Pro Laptops

(Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. on Thursday recalled some MacBook Pro laptops sold between September 2015 and February 2017 due to a "battery that may overheat and pose a safety risk."

The Cupertino, California-based technology giant said in a statement that it is asking customers to stop using the computers. The problem affects the 15-inch version of the older MacBook Pro. The company said it will replace the batteries in these models at no charge.

"Apple has determined that, in a limited number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro units, the battery may overheat and pose a fire safety risk," the company wrote.

The recall notice marks the second from the company this year. In April, Apple recalled some wall plug adapters for international use that could create a risk of electrical shock. Over the past several years, Apple also announced less critical replacement programs, such as for batteries and storage drives in the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

OMG - you dont have to tell me! Houston is horrible for that. Ill be perfectly fine, walk inside and be freezing! Or, Ive had indoor events and would go outside on breaks just to warm back up. I actually perspire more in places on my body because of clenching myself to keep warm.

The locals mostly act like its great that way. It seems backwards but because they grew up with A/C I guess they prefer it.

This -- and the flip side.... I lived in Chicago for a while and took the bus. It was absolutely frigid outside while we waited for the bus on winter mornings, so we dressed with multiple layers. The bus driver didn't wear a jacket, etc., and so had the heat cranked.
After getting on the bus and sitting for a while, we'd melt like Frosty the Snowman! smile

I played a luncheon for a business event and had to stop for a bit so the various speakers could do their speeches/presentations. High-end location. When the first speaker started to talk I couldnt believe how good it sounded. Ive never heard those ceiling speakers sound so good. So I look up...

Did you know that soldering a replacement CR2032 button cell into a circuit board ('cuz that's what the manufacturer did 30 years ago) can cause the cell to explode?

I know that now.

Yeah, you cant solder them directly. You need to solder in a holder.

This is where you need a professional soldering gun that gets super hot super fast, hot enough to melt the solder before whatever you are soldering even gets warm. Consumer irons take forever to get up to temp and dont get hot enough.

Thanks, guys. Desoldering the spent battery was a bit of a pain, but between heat and cutting I got it out. I have several soldering irons, including a 40-watt that was plenty hot -- problem was that the solder / flux combination I used could not properly adhere to the new battery before it exploded.

Having exploded a new battery on Thursday, that evening I ordered a ten-pack of CR2032 clips for about $5 US on Amazon Prime. They were delivered to my doorstep in less than 40 hours -- and I live in a rural area. Anyway, the old Roland Octapad actually had holes exactly where I needed them (which makes the soldered-in battery even more infuriating). A few minutes later, the job was done. So I guess I'll have the drum pad for another decade or so....

Loved the JL Cooper stuff. There aren't a lot of companies left doing deep MIDI hardware. I had some of the JL Cooper MIDI patch bays - I forget the main flagship....MSB+ maybe? Something like 8 in 8 out with Merge and patch storage. I also had the Nexus which was just a nice scaled down patchbay with switches. They had a lot of cool stuf for sync to SMPTE, MIDI, and other timecodes in the early days trying to bring it all together.

Closest thing I owned to the fadermaster was the Peavey PC1600x. 16 sliders and 16 buttons with I think 128 programs. I used that thing to death - very versatile and handy, but not real reliable. I went through 2 that both eventually died. If they would have lasted, would have been great. You could get pretty deep into things like SysEx assignments with automatic channel assignment and checksum calculation.

I posted this on my Facebook page because I couldn't find this thread here:

Two weeks ago, one of my bands had a gig in Rio de Janeiro. It looked like a well-promoted gig, we were treated incredibly well, and I had certain expectations about attendance. We walked onstage to a half-empty theatre, and I was instantly deflated. I suffered some technical difficulties at the top of the show and it threw me off. We start the show with a sample, and instead of setting up my laptop for that one thing, I played the audio off a USB key plugged into the backline RD700NX. I didn't realize until I walked out on stage that the RD doesn't go back to the beginning of the audio file once you press stop.... so I walk out onstage to launch the sample and it was already in the middle of the file. facepalm I recovered about three songs in, but was stuck in my head about my own playing, the less-than-ideal stage sound, all the causes we like to cast blame on for shows.
Then on the last song, the lead singer/rapper invited all the high school students onstage and it just became a huge party. One kid (maybe 10 at the oldest) said to our drummer, in earnest and halting English, “I am your fan.” THAT is the payoff of doing what we do; THAT is why you can’t give up on any single performance. Every song is a chance to affect somebody. Thanks, kid. I needed that reminder.

Funny story: I just set up a Yamaha piano lab at one of the schools where I work. One snag was that several of the cables weren't long enough to get from the pianos to the audio controller; worse yet, the troubleshooting guide cautioned against using Ethernet cables as replacements.

So I contacted the retailer, and asked if I could get specs on the cable so I could make custom lengths. They didn't know what the deal was with the cables.

The retailer contacted Yamaha USA. They didn't know the make-up of the cable either. But they confirmed that Ethernet cable would not work, although they didn't know why. They did tell my retailer that the piano lab controller was actually manufactured by JL Cooper, and then given a Yamaha Badge.

I looked on the JL Cooper web site, and discovered that they make a piano lab controller for Roland too. In fact, it may be the same unit -- it looks the same except for the paint color. So I called up the JL Cooper folks and asked if they could share the cable specs with me. Their answer was "Not normally, but we see that Yamaha has opened a ticket with us for this, and it's obviously referring to your specific situation."

Happy ending: JL Cooper sent me the pinouts, and Yamaha USA sent me some short cables that I could splice into my existing cables to get the length right. Both companies took great care of me. And the high school kids are pretty thrilled with their piano lab too.

I have to give a recommendation to these short cables. I use a small Yamaha 8 channel tabletop mixer that sits inside a Gator 4 space rack, along with a rack module and my VoiceLive 2 effects unit, so space is tight. I generally don’t like plugging/unplugging things from my mixer and would rather leave things plugged in when possible. I put right-angle adaptors on the plug end of these little cables and that end stays plugged into my mixer while the other ends hang out the back of the rack, which I plug long cables into that go to my Spacestation or whatever speakers I’m using. They have held up with no issues after almost 2 years. Pretty good!

On a recent gig most of the people were gone when I started the last hour, except for a couple of 6-tops. Usually I take these “opportunities” to play songs I rarely play, to keep them sharp. So I may go from Thompson Twins to Jim Croce to Jethro Tull. When one of the groups left, a 40-ish guy came over and said ‘About three songs ago you played ‘Song Sung Blue’. That was my absolute favorite song when I was a little boy. My mom used to sing it with me. I haven’t heard it in ages. Thanks - that made my night.” Well, it actually made MY night. It just goes to show that you never know with music. I see it as a cheesy throwaway 1970s background music fluff but to him it was a treasured memory.

Random thought: Drawbar colors are everything.

The last two weeks my Mojo61 has been down while I wait for a replacement power supply. I'm using the 9 faders on my Arturia Keylab instead. But man... I never realized how much I relied on the color-codings for my quick tone switches. If I'm looking for pure flutey tones, I start with the white bars (I barely use the 1' as I almost always have perc on), and then bring in the complex harmonic black bars for grittier sounds. I used to start from the left side and go up, but these days, I rely more on how harmonically complex the drawbar is. Faders aren't color coded, so I found myself having a few brain-farts when trying to think of the right patches.

I was using B4-2, which was my goto organ for years, but I've gotten much more used to the mix of VB3-2 in the Mojo as of late, so it's been kind of interesting going back and comparing.

I hate to criticize . . . I mean, I don’t have an album (CD? release?) coming out. But this doesn’t sound like Kansas to me. The slow song has a little ‘Lonely Wind’ vibe, but it’s not doing it for me.

Reminds me of their early stuff - kind of a Boston meets ELP vibe. Song for America, anyone? grin

Tom Brislin killing it on keyboards. 2thu

A reason why I collect old keyboards is that I feel partly responsible for doing it, responsible for preserving history and being a custodian for these things
Plus, old gear has a story. I like that.

I’ve done more yard work in the past 3 weeks than I’ve done in the past 3 years. Having all your income shut off overnight has me looking for every diversion possible.

Just curious, but this story doesn't make sense to me. Why would a manufacturer not have the pin out diagram in the owners manual? Unless they want your business to buy a super pricey custom cable from them. But if that was the case it would have been made easily evident how to get a custom cable from Yamaha or Roland.

This post triggered my aversion to proprietary standards!

I tend to feel the same way.

I think the rationale is that they want to sell a turnkey product -- an appliance. Just as your HDMI patch cable from your <insert box here> to your HDTV doesn't come with a pin-out diagram; people just want to use it.

The super pricey cable is available -- but most people buy them all at once when they buy the lab from the music store. So my approach -- a lab that was actually designed and implemented by a musician / semi-engineer -- was apparently pretty unusual.

What I find funny is that the Roland and Yamaha products appear to be identical, save the badge and the paint job. I had always assumed both companies made all their own stuff.

How about just a good old-fashioned mini-rant.

No, I was screwing around on some other keyboard forum, supposedly for "advanced" classical/legit pianists, primarily, and apparently you can't even self-censor your "bad" words with asterisks or whatever.

What the he** kind of Beaver Cleaver ess is that, MF?

Yeah, I understand not everybody earned how to curse properly as a child or a young adult, but I can respect that even some limpd*** mo*&^**ers of elderly years may have tender little sensibilities.

Just fix your profanity filter, if it's a problem, or let me self-censor!

First time I ever heard of some "musicians" who never heard even censored salty language.

That just shocked the fu*&^U he** out of me.

Spent ten minutes today trying to figure out why the noise floor on my personal mixer was suddenly so high. Only when I took off my headphones did I realize it was Cicadas in the trees outside.
