What's everyone's take? I'm rooting for Germany to repeat as Champs. Couldn't believe how bad Saudi Arabia looked in the opener, against a not highly ranked host nation team.

Dramatic start, what with Spain's manager being fired, Robbie Williams flipping off the world on live TV, and Russia running roughshod over Saudi Arabia.

Tough call for a champ... Germany seems like they're getting to the end of their golden generation, but a lot of those players are actually still quite young. That's what happens when your stars all broke out as teenagers. France looks great, and CR7 and Messi both have their last chances as real skill leaders for their teams. They'll be back, but they'll be overtaken by younger players.

There are always Cinderella teams, but they never make it all the way. In the end, we'll see one of the giants back on top.

Also, HOW ABOUT SOME WORLD CUP GAMES IN EDMONTON?! I doubt I'll be living here in 2026, but hey. Iz nice.

I’m shocked that Italy didn’t qualify. I think Portugal will do well - it’s Ronaldo's last shot. But it’ll probably come down to Germany, Brazil, France, and perhaps Argentina. Although I heard on NPR yesterday that Peru has a very good team.

I'll be cheering for England as always along with our neighbors/rivals Mexico. I also love Iceland after what they did a few years ago.

Can't wait to get into it.

Yep, Italy and the Netherlands were stunned to miss out this time. Won't happen again once they move to the 48 team format.

I'm hoping Mo Salah can lead Egypt on a good run. If he's truly fit, that is.

Hopefully we won't embarrass ourselves this time. Excitement here is pretty low. If Brazil does well in the first couple of games things should pick up.

I'm always excited to see surprises, even if they don't make it to the end. Maybe Iceland may have a game of fame...

I'm glad they fed Suarez before the game.. no biting this time.

Portugal x Spain should be a good game.

Odd choice for location for 2026 - US, Canada and Mexico?

Can´t wait for the match vs Spain this evening,- the iberian duel.
I love both the countries,- my prefered area for vacation in europe.
I planned moving already a decade ago, but my mobility issues stopped that.

We´ll see.
I don´t think germany will do it this time.
In fact I´d find it somewhat boring when they do it again.
They have their strategy how to win, but there are so many other teams around the globe exploding on the pitch,- and I love it fast and risky.
The latino teams were good always ...
I think Brasil had a glitch and comes back.

I was a bit disappointed by the Uruguay team this afternoon,- but it´s just only the beginning.

For sure I´ll have fun for the upcoming 2 weeks.

Y´all too, I hope !

With the Netherlands not even qualifying, I'm pretty lukewarm about this year's World Cup. I'll follow it with some interest, and will watch the big matches, but without a team to root for it's just not as much fun!

I'll be happy with anybody winning as long as it is not Belgium or Portugal.

Portugal-Spain was a stunner of a match. Incredible free kick goal from Ronaldo. Only caught the second half but I enjoyed it immensely.

Wow, that 3rd Spanish goal was one of the best shots I've seen in years. It was one of those rockets that when shown in slow-mo looks like a regular-speed shot. Plus it was placed right at the post (almost too right at the post).

Man I can't stand Ronaldo. No denying he's a great player, but I automatically root for his opponent (unless it's an uber-flopping team, which thankfully are more rare than they used to be. Italy, Sound America, I'm looking at *you*)

Prime time 8pm kick off here. Pubs and clubs will be heaving but I will be watching at home. Her indoors may not be well pleased but it is non negotiable. I have an Alsace Pinot Gris ready though to soften the impact and as sign of goodwill to France that we don't wish them ill in all their endeavours.

Good to hear Bobby, well a 2 1 loss to the most expensive team in the cup, combined value 1 billion euro. Now we can cheer France on to beat the rest in our group, we do the same and goal difference will not matter.

Apart from getting a little frazzled by 85 minutes the Socceroos really impressed and did us proud.

Ever since Iceland's efforts in the 2016 Euro cup (drew with a Ronaldo led Portugal and beat England) I've been a fan. Their defending against Argentina was solid, hoping they make it into the knockout stages.

The goalie was bad ass from Mexico.
He actually tipped a tipped penalty kick.
Incredible reflexes.

Talking to my dad earlier, he said he went out for a cigarette at 91 mins when it was 1-1 between England and Tunisia. Laughed on the way out the door. When he walked back in and saw the updated score he shouted at the TV.

Best two goals I've seen so far (and I haven't seen them all, or most maybe):
- 2nd Spanish goal against Portugal (what a cannon shot)
- 2nd Belgium goal against Panama (incredible pass from the outside of the foot bending back to hit a charging teammate...just amazing control from De Bruyne, who was on the run himself...one of the best I can recall)

Belgium looked largely uninterested, until they looked devastatingly skilled and creative on all three goals.

Who saw Russia coming out of the gate with an 8-1 differential after two games? Yeah, no one.

Speaking of Mexicans.
There’s a guy named Javier whose wife wouldn’t let him go with his buddies to the games.
So his Bros made a cardboard cut out of him and drug him around Russia.
Cracks me up something awful.

THIS.
I had this discussion earlier today while watching RUSSIA vs EGYPT in a hotel lobby with a couple Latino dudes. Are you fn kidding me? Russia didn't even qualify. They are in only because of being the host country. 8 goals in 2 matches. crazy

Maybe if they play, Suarez can take a bite out of skinless Ronaldo. Not sure which one I dislike more, can they both lose?

Flopping is still a thing in futbol, though it's less of the "flailing arms jump in the air" (since slo-mo can clearly show the acting job) and more of the "lie on the ground like a dead fish" when anyone so much as touches you. Where are the guys with the magical cold spray when you need them. As much as I love the sport, faking injuries is pathetic.

Blah games the last two games compared to the previous ones.

This World Cup has been awesome so far. Have watched plenty of action but haven't been able to see every match. Love the 90 second '90 in 90' highlights vids they are doing. Too much awesome action to talk about. Looking forward to all of Saturday's matches wow.

Too much fouling IMO in all the matches I've seen. I guess it's like playoff basketball, which can have the same problem. Game slows down and teams grind.

Well after the watching Denmark v Australia in what turned out to be pretty free flowing game with a disappointing 1-1 draw, for us at least, VAR levelled the field for us. Where VAR went against us in our game against France we got a goal this time from a questionable VAR decision.

VAR has upped the number of penalties and yellow cards handed out but given the use of video review in cricket, tennis and other codes of football like Rugby League I think it is here to stay.

After three leg surgeries on my daughter soccer just isn't as fun as it used to be. But she sure loved playing the game.

The fans don't fight like they used to do they? The guys from Birmingham used to like to really throw down.

The last 10 min of the Brazil v Costa Rica game.

I've never seen so many big strong blokes go down like shot ducks. The Brazilians to try and manufacture a penalty (nearly worked), the Costa Ricans to try to waste time (also nearly worked).

Neymar spent so much time rolling around on the ground I was starting to suspect he had an inner ear problem!

Difficult to watch! Detracted from the otherwise sublime skills of the Brazilians. 2-0 probably a fair result in the end.

I read an article years about about pheromones, and they mentioned some of the standing-room soccer stadiums in England. Don't shoot me, just relating what I recall, but they said there was no way to extricate yourself to go to a restroom, so you just....did your thing right there. The male pheromones in urine then worked their magic and caused more aggression than there might have otherwise been smile

Then again, from what I've read about hooligans in various places, some people just want to watch the world burn...:D

I was honestly hoping they would both lose, closest thing I guess would have been a draw...

But yes Brazil was by far the better team, diving aside.

Holy crap. The obituary was fully written, Löw was already fired, and then Toni muhfuggin Kroos steps up to the plate. Damn.

They always do this! How..?

Just before Kroos took that free kick my brother in law said: “ there are few things certain in life, but this kick will go in 100%!” Of course he was right..

Tell you one thing: it's no fluke. These guys drill for days. Same thing with penalties. England always ask how they do it: well, the boring stuff in training will clinch it when s--- gets real. Good lesson here.

thank you for that, Menno. I have been at Gearfest the last 2 days and haven't seen 1 second of sports. Didn't even know what happened until I logged on to this forum. Germany lives to see another day. cheers

Well, it was deserved for out German friends. They played better most of the match, but missed a lot of opportunities.

I’m just afraid they now will win the championship again....;)

England vs The Washington Generals (oops Panama). What an unusual game, was on record-breaking pace there for a while.

Featuring possibly the strangest hat-trick of all time...

England looking good.

Japan continuing to surprise.

It would be interesting if these two were to meet in the next round!

I’ve been traveling in EU and now Tunisia for 10 days ... they do like their futbol over here. A lot. My traveling colleague is a WC fanatic ... a self-proclaimed expert on all teams everywhere. Can’t wait to get home just to stop the conversation. But the soccer is good for the most part.

One of the most drama filled moments I have experienced watching a World Cup (and there have been many) - with the split screen of the Mexico - Sweden and Germany - S Korea game. Thoroughly enjoyed that nail biter.

Should have brought Leroy Sane with them!! And yes, the Germans deserve to be out. The barely beat Sweden and were well beaten the other two games.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO Poland and Japan. Disgusting. Poland actively helping Japan by trying not to score another goal, and Japan is cowardly playing for a one goal loss....I'll be rooting against both these sides in future games.

I don’t get why Japan goes through and Senegal does not?

Same wins/losses/draws, same goal deficit, they tied in their match. What is the determining factor there?

Looking forward to this England v Belgium clash. Allez les Diables rouges!

Edit: Lots of changes for rest in both squads... still a lot of quality available to both managers though, should still be a good game.

Not saying Senegal should feel slighted really...they controlled play from end to end right until the final shot(s) on goal... really poor shooting by them. Not to mention, selfish play. Time after time a couple guys would make a run and be ignored while someone took a weak shot from way outside...WC-level goalies are too good for that.

But the last 10 min of Poland v Japan was the most pitiful excuse for futbol I've ever seen. Pretty much as competitive as the typical NBA all start game, only switched where nobody even attempts to score vs attempts to play defense. If I had to guess, Poland preferred Japan to go through since they fouled less than Senegal (?)

Menno, Eric mentioned it right after your post. Determining factor is fair play. Senegal had 2 more yellow cards.

Entertaining game between France and Argentina who was a colossal mess!!! Such wasted talent. What an incompetent manager.

Neither do I but out here the money was on France and Uruguay to win.

Watching Le Bleus step up in the second half and Argentina slowly disintegrate provided the most exciting soccer I have viewed in a long time.

Going to face some difficult late night viewing choices from next Saturday once Le Tour kicks off.

I would normally root for a small country like Uruguay.

But they have Suarez. Not only is he a biting freak, he faked at least two head injuries in the last match. Replay showed his head wasn't touched yet he was lying down holding it like he got grazed by a sniper's bullet. Rooting for their opponent(s) unless someone manages to act worse than that.

Man, Russia is showing why neither Napoleon nor Hitler could beat them. Their defense is friggin’ impregnable.

Well, oddly I had both Russia and Croatia pegged to advance, based on nothing but gut feeling.

I wish my gut was right more often.

What an incredible tournament so far - one of the best I can remember. Lots of great goals, excellent performances from relative minnows, and some of the strongest teams going home early.

Wow, last night reminded me of my younger days as a soccer fan when Spain could regularly be depended upon to underachieve in major tournaments, despite being loaded with talent.

Of course they well and truly broke that hoodoo ten years ago!

I honestly thought Mexico had a fair chance of winning, but Brazil was clearly the better team today. And they are back to their classic flair, very impressive. Mexico gave it all in the first twenty minutes and had nothing left after that.

Also, Neymar is a douche. I thought that bit of theatrics was worth yellow at the very least.

As an aside, I really think the offside rules should be reviewed. Off a corner or when everybody is in the box, they really shouldn't flag for it.

Only 1 goal scored against Brazil in 4 matches. They are money right now.

Rudy, you like Belgium now, but how would you feel if they advance to the Finals while the Netherlands are not even participating?
We’d never hear the end of it, everlasting shame...

Fantastic pair of matches today. Brazil really did show why they are the favorites. Their offense can strike with great speed at the drop of a hat, and their defense is impregnable.

Japan v Belgium - - what an incredible match! I'm so glad I didn't take a nap during the second half as it was one of the greatest halves I've watched this tournament.

It definitely is Rudy. You blokes should have taken up soccer instead of piano as kids and none of this would have happened. For shame!

Stayed up for the Brazil game but missed the epic Belgium/Japan encounter as I had to get to sleep at some point. Tell you what those Belgium games have not been boring to watch thus far.

I only caught the last 30+ minutes of SWE-SUI, but I have to say I was not impressed with the referee.

Both teams looked average, it could have been a regular MLS match.

Neymar may be a pussy and modern soccer has a lot of contact, but what the Layun was doing was clearly foul play. There is no argument here - expect more from that team than resorting to that.

Glad to see Brazil getting their act together. Saw Japan-Belgium.. what a match. Japanese team was too naive on the last play. Most teams would have locked up until the end of the second half and wait for the overtime.

Rooting for Croatia. Hopefully they will show again some of the stamina from the first round.

A little late, but yes, it was very sad to see the Japan lose in such dramatic circumstances.

On the flip-side, England progress through to the next quarter finals, winning on penalties in a world cup!? Incredible!

France getting up over Uruguay was one of the better games so far. France are proving to be very difficult to score against. For a moment in the second half it looked like it was going the same way as the Boomers v Phillipines game earlier this week.

I love watching France, though they are prone to dive-flopping as much as anyone. They are like the anti-Spain when it comes to attacking--they pass it around, but it's only a matter of time before a strike toward the goal. Spain never attacked, it was horrible.

France had a few head-scratching giveaways and relaxed play from the back (too relaxed, sometimes you just need to clear it). I suspect that if they lose it will be mental mistakes.

Likewise, Belgium better play better defense than they did against Japan, or else Brazil is going to beat them 5-3 or something.

Man, I am conflicted about Belgium. They play a great and fair game, but we can't have them winning the world cup before we do.

I think they'll have a much tougher time against France, though.

Apart from France, cup finals is all underdogs, although a Sardinian friend tipped England to be in the final back in the group stage. Only saw the first 20 minutes of Sweden v England and went to bed thinking Sweden would get up. Consecutive nights of Midnight and 4am kickoffs are more than this koala can bear.

As much as Aussies love seeing England get beat, heart tips England to win the cup, head says France.

Got home from a gig Saturday night in time to watch the second half of England putting Sweden to the sword. Their (England's) 'keeper did very well!

Time to disclose some self interest - I had a few shekels on Belgium to win THE WHOLE THING before the knockout phase started.

Go you good things!

Final should be Belgium versus England with a probably Belgium win. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind France in the Final against either England or Croatia. I think England will get by Croatia, but would have to play the game of their lives to win the whole thing!! I'm rooting for either Belgium or France in the Final no matter who the opposition is.

Really, the final should have been between Belgium and France!! Oh well! I'll have to settle for an epic game in the semi-finals!

Funny, I didn't care who we got in the semi, because I thought that we had a reasonable chance of beating either Russia or Croatia.

However, in the final, I think we would struggle against either France or Belgium.

After the first game (which seems ages ago) I told all my friends that I thought France would lift the cup.

Hello chaps,

I confess that I fell asleep watching England vs Sweden, missed the first goal, then woke-up some time during the second half, realising that we had scored! wink

Then I saw the second goal, and remained awake until the final whistle. wink

This is the first time England have made it to the semi-finals since 1990. The BBC put together a very emotional package from Italia 90, with Bobby Robson's England losing to (West) Germany on penalties. At the end of the video we cut back to Gary Linekar, presenting in the studio and still looking great at 57, but clearly struggling to hold back the tears. You could see how much it meant to the guy, and I'll admit I felt a lump in my throat too.

Wednesday's game (Thursday morning over here) will be an incredibly emotional occasion for England supporters.

James

I'm torn.

As a Scot, my whole life my mantra has been ABE (anyone but England). That was the case this year, but there have been some moments where I've almost wanted them to win the whole thing.

I'll probably be rooting for Croatia (and then France/Belgium if England get to the final) but don't think I'll be as vehemently against them winning the cup as I may have been in the past. From what I've seen so far, it'll be well deserved.

The only thing that annoys me is the social media and ITV/BBC hype, and all that will follow if they do win the Cup. The hype and media attention will last for months, and we won't be able to hide from it.

Welp, I'm going to miss what (on paper) could be the most exciting match of the WC, France v Belgium. Moving all day tomorrow, and will likely be too busy in days ahead to even watch a stream of it even if I avoid spoilers.

Best on paper, it'll probably end up being a sloppy 0-0 with barely any shots on goal grin Seriously, how Belgium weathered that onslaught from Brazil without giving up 6 goals was incredible. France has played better defense but they've also been a bit "unfocused" with lazy giveaways a few times. If I was betting I'd go with 3-2, no idea who on top.

I have to wonder if Croatia can easily recover from what has been a grueling couple of matches. They looked tired to me in that last match from the start. Tough playing against a home team to be sure.

Good semi-final today. Belgium was the better team much of the first half and parts of the second. France had several wasted chances that could have made the score much more lopsided. Don't know about Martinez' management or tactics. His lineup and substitutions didn't make any sense to me. Whatever!

I only feel bad for Hazard and DeBruyne who were exceptional as usual. The rest of the team was so-so. Lukaku was invisible the entire match. Michy might have had more impact as a striker than Lukaku but, I'm a Chelsea supporter and I'm biased of course.

Final: France versus . . . . . . .

Croatia deserved the win. They are not a particularly flashy team, but they work hard for 120 minutes.

I think France takes it all though, and I'm rooting for Belgium on Saturday!!

Incredibly disappointed this morning, however I'm also incredibly proud of what this young, inexperienced England team has achieved.

Please take a bow, Sir Gareth Southgate!

Credit to Croatia though, they stuck at it, and in the end, their experienced heads proved to be the deciding factor. I wouldn't bet against them to go on to beat France on Saturday.

Cheers,
James

Aside from that, it's not shocking at all to see France as the favorite though. They've stormed through the knockout stage beating Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium, they have an extra day's rest and haven't played extra time at all in the knockouts. Croatia meanwhile has played one more match when you combine the three extra time matches (90 minutes), has a day less of rest and couldn't beat Denmark, Russia or England in regulation, all of which are factors.
I'm rooting for Croatia. cool

Pickford was impressive with all the shots fired at him. Rebounds quickly.

Croatia deserved the win. England were well on top in the first half, and should have pushed on and finished Croatia off. Could have been 3-0 up at half time and the game would have been over. Instead, they took their foot off the gas. No killer instinct. The longer the game went on, it became obvious that there was only going to be one winner.

As an aside, I think the standard of refereeing in both semi's was very poor.

I think this worldcup shows like never before how the end result is based on random details instaed of real dominance from one team over the other.
If Kane would have scored instead of the more difficult tap against the post from a yard out, we would be celebrating England right now.
Belgium could have just as easily won from France as Brasil from Belgium.

Nice to see so little between most top nations, althaugh i remember Portugal being Europian champions with repetative draws in regular time.
In a competition Portugal would float somewhere halfway the rankings at the end of a season.

I like cup football, but the sheer randomness in the final outcome is a bit to much at times.
Germany trashing Brasil 7-1 in the semi finals in 2014, will be remebered for ever, but Brasil beating Italy with penalties in 1994 ,apart from the fact that Brasil won,....not ,

I surely hope the final provides us with a clear winner instead of a weaker team grinding out till they somehow manage to win a penalty shoot out.
Please not.....

Well, usually I don't participate too much on OT post but today, I would like to share to everyone that I'm very proud of our French Team, just one more game and it's done like in 1998....I was in France at that time....

As i wrote several pages before, France is the best team of the tournament. They proved it against Belgium, as it was the first match that Belgium couldn't play proper football. They were blocked by french defendants.
I believe Croatia is a good and thechnical team, but they're one or two gears below France. I was in Paris a week ago and i regret i did not move my trip there for this week-it's gonna be a nice two days celebration (14 July-national day, 15 July-world cup day)

I’m on vacation starting the end of July in France.
I am on the fence if it is a good thing or a bad thing if they win the worldcup.
It must surely bring a positive vibe in France, but an extra dosis of the typicall ‘French superiour attitude’ is something i fear whistle

Speaking as an Englishman, the superior attitude would have been a lot worse if we had won!

Our press was already talking about a national holiday and an open top bus tour.

Happy for France. Croatia put on a valiant effort and could have won it had they had more reliably dangerous forwards. They were fun to watch for their hustle. France got by on its talent up front...

Our press was already talking about a national holiday and an open top bus tour.

I know,...... i frequently read ‘the sun’ and ‘the daily mail’ ...... just for fun.
From ‘football is coming home’......till ‘we learned to love our team again’.....as a foreigner it was priceless delusional chauvinism at it’s best.

To opposite took place in my country ( the Netherlands) the pundits always destroy the national team if they do not fully implement Total football ala Johan Cruijff.
Many were glad Spain beat them with 1-0 in 2010 because Spain played like a team should play ........so the pundits claimed.

They fully destroyed our recent team as the weakest ever, but the road to Russia turned out to be a very difficult one with good reason.
In the poule phase we had to deal with France and Sweden and just came short.
France is the new world champion and Sweden won their group including Germany.

Of course the Netherlands isn’t as good as we once were, but no where near the insane amount of ridicule they received over the last two years.

I knew it was always gonna be too tall an order for Croatia to beat France, but I was kind of hoping they’d somehow pull off the impossible.

Without the own goal and penalty, who knows? But France is a deserved champion, without question.

See you guys in 2020 for the Eurocup!

Belgium third, not bad. Kicked perfid Albion’s rear. Now for that Eurocup indeed.

And yes about England, I played a lot of time against Engish teams when I was playing football when I was younger, that kind of one week tournament, one week in England, the year after on France....And they were always thinking that they would win all the time....So, when we were winning, not all th entire, I confess, they were really gpagressive, not letting us coming into the pub and son on....And I was a teenager...So, not word cup....
