Hello chaps,

I confess that I fell asleep watching England vs Sweden, missed the first goal, then woke-up some time during the second half, realising that we had scored! wink

Then I saw the second goal, and remained awake until the final whistle. wink

This is the first time England have made it to the semi-finals since 1990. The BBC put together a very emotional package from Italia 90, with Bobby Robson's England losing to (West) Germany on penalties. At the end of the video we cut back to Gary Linekar, presenting in the studio and still looking great at 57, but clearly struggling to hold back the tears. You could see how much it meant to the guy, and I'll admit I felt a lump in my throat too.

Wednesday's game (Thursday morning over here) will be an incredibly emotional occasion for England supporters.

James

Perhaps even emotional enough to keep them awake for the whole 90 minutes James? Hehe...

I'm torn.

As a Scot, my whole life my mantra has been ABE (anyone but England). That was the case this year, but there have been some moments where I've almost wanted them to win the whole thing.

I'll probably be rooting for Croatia (and then France/Belgium if England get to the final) but don't think I'll be as vehemently against them winning the cup as I may have been in the past. From what I've seen so far, it'll be well deserved.

The only thing that annoys me is the social media and ITV/BBC hype, and all that will follow if they do win the Cup. The hype and media attention will last for months, and we won't be able to hide from it.

Welp, I'm going to miss what (on paper) could be the most exciting match of the WC, France v Belgium. Moving all day tomorrow, and will likely be too busy in days ahead to even watch a stream of it even if I avoid spoilers.

Best on paper, it'll probably end up being a sloppy 0-0 with barely any shots on goal grin Seriously, how Belgium weathered that onslaught from Brazil without giving up 6 goals was incredible. France has played better defense but they've also been a bit "unfocused" with lazy giveaways a few times. If I was betting I'd go with 3-2, no idea who on top.

I have to wonder if Croatia can easily recover from what has been a grueling couple of matches. They looked tired to me in that last match from the start. Tough playing against a home team to be sure.

Too bad for Belgium... Ah well, as Menno said, at least we won’t be laughed at by our neighbours coming 4 years...

Belgium gone, and I've done my dough.

Worth it for the thrilling ride. Looking forward to the final, no matter what the outcome.

Good semi-final today. Belgium was the better team much of the first half and parts of the second. France had several wasted chances that could have made the score much more lopsided. Don't know about Martinez' management or tactics. His lineup and substitutions didn't make any sense to me. Whatever!

I only feel bad for Hazard and DeBruyne who were exceptional as usual. The rest of the team was so-so. Lukaku was invisible the entire match. Michy might have had more impact as a striker than Lukaku but, I'm a Chelsea supporter and I'm biased of course.

Final: France versus . . . . . . .

Croatia deserved the win. They are not a particularly flashy team, but they work hard for 120 minutes.

I think France takes it all though, and I'm rooting for Belgium on Saturday!!

Yes they did. They played with more energy the entire second half and overtime. Didn't see that one coming.

Incredibly disappointed this morning, however I'm also incredibly proud of what this young, inexperienced England team has achieved.

Please take a bow, Sir Gareth Southgate!

Credit to Croatia though, they stuck at it, and in the end, their experienced heads proved to be the deciding factor. I wouldn't bet against them to go on to beat France on Saturday.

Cheers,
James

Aside from that, it's not shocking at all to see France as the favorite though. They've stormed through the knockout stage beating Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium, they have an extra day's rest and haven't played extra time at all in the knockouts. Croatia meanwhile has played one more match when you combine the three extra time matches (90 minutes), has a day less of rest and couldn't beat Denmark, Russia or England in regulation, all of which are factors.
I'm rooting for Croatia. cool

Croatia deserved the win. England were well on top in the first half, and should have pushed on and finished Croatia off. Could have been 3-0 up at half time and the game would have been over. Instead, they took their foot off the gas. No killer instinct. The longer the game went on, it became obvious that there was only going to be one winner.

As an aside, I think the standard of refereeing in both semi's was very poor.

I think this worldcup shows like never before how the end result is based on random details instaed of real dominance from one team over the other.
If Kane would have scored instead of the more difficult tap against the post from a yard out, we would be celebrating England right now.
Belgium could have just as easily won from France as Brasil from Belgium.

Nice to see so little between most top nations, althaugh i remember Portugal being Europian champions with repetative draws in regular time.
In a competition Portugal would float somewhere halfway the rankings at the end of a season.

I like cup football, but the sheer randomness in the final outcome is a bit to much at times.
Germany trashing Brasil 7-1 in the semi finals in 2014, will be remebered for ever, but Brasil beating Italy with penalties in 1994 ,apart from the fact that Brasil won,....not ,

I surely hope the final provides us with a clear winner instead of a weaker team grinding out till they somehow manage to win a penalty shoot out.
Please not.....

Well, usually I don't participate too much on OT post but today, I would like to share to everyone that I'm very proud of our French Team, just one more game and it's done like in 1998....I was in France at that time....

As i wrote several pages before, France is the best team of the tournament. They proved it against Belgium, as it was the first match that Belgium couldn't play proper football. They were blocked by french defendants.
I believe Croatia is a good and thechnical team, but they're one or two gears below France. I was in Paris a week ago and i regret i did not move my trip there for this week-it's gonna be a nice two days celebration (14 July-national day, 15 July-world cup day)

I’m on vacation starting the end of July in France.
I am on the fence if it is a good thing or a bad thing if they win the worldcup.
It must surely bring a positive vibe in France, but an extra dosis of the typicall ‘French superiour attitude’ is something i fear whistle

Speaking as an Englishman, the superior attitude would have been a lot worse if we had won!

Our press was already talking about a national holiday and an open top bus tour.

Happy for France. Croatia put on a valiant effort and could have won it had they had more reliably dangerous forwards. They were fun to watch for their hustle. France got by on its talent up front...

I know,...... i frequently read ‘the sun’ and ‘the daily mail’ ...... just for fun.
From ‘football is coming home’......till ‘we learned to love our team again’.....as a foreigner it was priceless delusional chauvinism at it’s best.

To opposite took place in my country ( the Netherlands) the pundits always destroy the national team if they do not fully implement Total football ala Johan Cruijff.
Many were glad Spain beat them with 1-0 in 2010 because Spain played like a team should play ........so the pundits claimed.

They fully destroyed our recent team as the weakest ever, but the road to Russia turned out to be a very difficult one with good reason.
In the poule phase we had to deal with France and Sweden and just came short.
France is the new world champion and Sweden won their group including Germany.

Of course the Netherlands isn’t as good as we once were, but no where near the insane amount of ridicule they received over the last two years.

I knew it was always gonna be too tall an order for Croatia to beat France, but I was kind of hoping they’d somehow pull off the impossible.

Without the own goal and penalty, who knows? But France is a deserved champion, without question.

See you guys in 2020 for the Eurocup!

Belgium third, not bad. Kicked perfid Albion’s rear. Now for that Eurocup indeed.
