My band, circa 1989:

Enjoy these threads! I started this one here a while back, where the emphasis was (at least initially) on individual “rock star” shots of us playing keys. Great to have an update!

Nice Moonglow! Thanks for the old thread, I did a search of recent years and couldn't find anything, this is good stuff! Most of the pics are gone.

Cool Mr. Stubb! Looks a very 'back east' vibe.... this is east coast, yes? Back then, out west it was more the flower children thing.

Me in my drumming days sometime around 1980. My first good band. Obviously the bass player's mom took the picture. You cannot tell in the picture but there is a gong behind me.

I'll try and cover the "old" and "new" (not nude) criteria in one post.

My pub rock band - having fun in the recording studio, circa 1997:

The same band 20 years later, all members still together, with less hair, more kilograms and a female vocalist:

Nice Dave! And to be able to play together after 4 decades, wow! Half of my old bandmates are dead and gone.

And ditto on Linwood's band, that is very funky! Great singers and that tambourine player!

And another shot of myself and Nashville's own Steve Williams- our lead vocalist and guitar/organist ala Greg Allman - at an outside concert at someone's farm in Ill.

And the girl with her legs up on the porch is my wife, Diane. We started hangin' out together in the Spring of 1970. Little did she know what she was signing on for 48 years later.

"You had two keyboard players ?"...Paul just played on a few; most of the time he was singing and then Woody ( the guy in front of me) also played trombone. I'm still in touch with most of those guys. i sure miss playin' with Blunt (drummer)...what a feel he had (rip). That sure felt good up under you playin' this type of stuff.

Watching this made me unaccountably happy. Great playing all around. Did everyone go on to musical careers? Also, which stand are you using? It looks like the OnStage logo but I don't recognize that one.

The Baldwin Electro Piano. It was pre-Yamaha CP80/70 by at least 6-7 years, if not longer. A total beast to move around.

Thanks, it was a special band. And my first band where I really felt lucky to be there. Prior to that I was in two bands, both were good but not at this level. Woodrose was a solid two notches up from anything I'd ever experienced at that point in my young life. All of those guys were pretty well known around the area and when they got me it was like -- who is this guy from the North County 'burbs ?! We played original tunes and off beat stuff - The Band, Allman Brothers, Dead. It was really hard to book us but we had a small loyal following - mostly around Ill. and parts of STL.

Yeah everyone was pretty active and played together, and in different bands in STL/Ill., into the beginning of this decade. I think at that point most everyone said -- we're getting a bit old for this bar scene. These days the lead guitarist, bass player and drummer aren't very active at all.

Steve Williams, who I mentioned, moved to Nashville probably sometime in the '90s I think. He has had a very good career. He wrote that song "Red Neck Yacht Club", that was big on the Country charts and I think crossed over onto the pop charts. He's written tunes for a host of other Country artists too. He sings and plays around Nashville with a Soul group called the ConSoulers. They're quite excellent and very popular. He also does duo/trio acoustic contexts with different people, including his wife, who is also a good singer.

The lead guitarist in that Woodrose video , Glenn Harris, is one of the greatest natural musicians I've ever played with in my life. Doesn't read, doesn't really know a lot of theory but he's one of those guys that just has it , a natural. It was sad because he was Leon Russell's road manager for a long time and didn't play at all. But he played rings around all of Leon's guitarists.

I don't know the stand as it was the other keyboard player's stuff. Because of set up logistics I had to use his watered down Motif 88, whatever those things are called. I had my friend's CP4 ready to go but it would have been too much hassle to switch out the keyboards so I just played his stuff. I hated that keyboard, it felt like a toy.

A couple notes from the above band pics of mine. In the very first one, the singer (upper right) is the current lead singer of my original metal band "seventh of never" which I have no pics of (not with me in them, since I joined later).

The guitar player in that same band is also the guitar player in the "two cents" duo that came next (we split off...get it? 2 of us from "money is power"? ....Two Cents? And also what was later to become "Atari Twins".

The Guitar player in "Class X" is also one of the guitar players on "Oh Brother". Also not listed is a band that ran concurrently with "Class X" called "Klose 'Nuff". It was the exact same band with a different drummer - Mark Klose, who is a local radio personality who has been on the radio for years. He didn't want to play that much, so he would split the night with the other drummer and do "meet and greets", etc. We played without him as Class X.

Nice pics JDan! But now I have a bone to pic - - wasn't it you earlier who was railing against wearing 501s? It looks like half of these pics that's what you guys are wearing! boing

Seriously I'm loving all these pics.. this is a cool look into our subculture, people taking chances in life and putting it all out there against big odds. There are easier things to do in this world but the people in this community for one reason or another chose this and put a lot of passion into it. Thanks very much for sharing these and keep 'em coming!

I'm not sure I specifically called out 501's - if I did it was probably because I don't personally like that particular cut, especially the buttonflies!. What I HAVE said is that the band should look like a band, and not just another member of the audience. I've also said that I've been in bands that have not done a good job of this, and others who have - so I can speak from experience with both.

Going back through the pics - obviously the first one had a theme going - we dressed in early 90s casual baggy suits and put dollar signs all over everything. My Deltex keyboard stand was wallpapered with money.

My duo didn't really dress up but it was a very different vibe - we were doing happy hours, patios, restaurant bars, etc.

Radio star was an example where half the band wanted to go all out and the other half didn't. Sometimes 2 or 3 of us would dress up and the rest wouldn't, and it just didn't work. That's when I jumped ship and joined that 80s band. I think you can see between the 2 pictures the difference between going part of the way to going all the way.

When I joined Klose 'Nuff/Class X I had cut back on my gigging schedule due to my divorced and joined them just to be able to keep involved in music. They did not play much or get paid very well. A perfect example of a decent band in terms of talent but didn't really have it together in terms of putting on a good show. But then again, they didn't really care, they just liked getting together to play - a common theme I hear on here, which is fine as long as everybody is on the same page.

Atari Twins obviously would have dressed up had it gotten off the ground.

Oh Brother is another one of those that was sort of half and half with the dressing up. Yes there are some jeans in the picture, but also shirts that stand out a bit, hats, and shades. Accessories can do a lot to make you stand out. Again, that was a 5pc acoustic, so the vibe was a bit different as an acoustic act. Also, this band is a $100/man gig...which is consistent with everything I've said about themes and dressing up.

That said, I just sat in with them Saturday night for the first time in about 1-1/2 year. I did wear jeans, but with my shirt, shades, and Fedora, even though I had not played with them and hadn't gone on stage yet, when I walked up to the bar for a drink, the bartender asked "are you in the band?" That's what I'm talking about. They assumed from my look that I was in the band. Consistent with what I was saying, 2 of the 5 of us were dressed like that, so...

What I listed as my current band is only regular fill-in work for me. I'm not in the band pic from the web site:

The guy second from left is the regular keyboard player. In the live picture I showed, they had already stripped off the outerwear. That's often what they'll do. They start with jackets, vests, etc. and strip it off as the night goes on. And the jeans aren't "501's".

Here is me at the recent Cinco de Mayo gig:

That was '81.The guy standing out front singing in that pic was playing trombone and singing in the first one I posted. He and I were in another band together in the mid '70's. I had dinner with him a few months ago here in Vegas. His name is Linwood, also. When was the last time you were in a band with two woods?

Here's '84. Look how young Cleto was. That's me in shades. lol I'm so old I've got band pics and tapes for days....forgive me.

(hope this shows up)

First band, and yes that is a cheap Casio with one speaker grin We were 15 or so. None of us could play our instruments prior to a year back from that pic, I didn't know what a chord was for another year (and yet was trying to learn the Doors, Who etc...in 1982, go figure....)

The photo is old and yellowed. The year is 1981.

Our manager, Tony Geranios, is Rush's guitar/keyboard technician. He helped build Geddy's old Moog/Oberheim hybrid unit. I got to play it when Rush's equipment was set up for rehearsal. Tony goes by "Jack Secret" among music industry folks.

ahhh cool deal Michael.. I played the Troub quite a few times, a few years later, around the 1984-86 era. Whiskey, Roxy, a few others. I remember hanging out to watch other groups and all the Sunset Strip craziness back then, fun times. Oh yeah, and I had a CP-70B with an OB-1 (or was it an OBX?) on top, nice!

It is amazing and sad how few pictures I have of myself playing. Girlfriends have taken pictures over the years, but whenever we break up and I ask for copies they never put out, … pictures I mean.

I have a similar problem. I have some of the 8x10 promo shots, but all the cool gig photos, have no idea where they all are. I recall we'd have house parties, and there would be photos just laying out around the house, and whenever our senses would return (a day later usually), all the photos would be gone, damn! Reckless youth

Believe me, this hurts me a lot more than it hurts you.

That's me on the left.

A little picture of me on keys in a guest band, with a borrowed keyboard, over a decade ago:

Nothing wrong with that pic there MOI! But you need to give context - what year was this? Around 2014 - 2015 yes?

Now Theo, if you just had some Linux based rendering software to correct for the decade old video codecs.....maybe lexicon has developed them! Looking good there, buddy, though I'm not sure the community will approve of your keyboard stand.....borrowed or not. LOL. Nice hair by the way. I wish I had that hair even a decade ago!!!!!!

EDIT: I assumed hair based on the facial amount, but given the hat, cannot confirm the hair. LOL. I currently have plenty of facial hair, but head has been bald for a decade.

"waygetter" - yeah, it's actually at some form of beach believe it or not, in the environment of Amsterdam. It sounded alright, so it was fun in sun!I ditched a lot of the weight (most of my life I'm slim), not so much the hair. Where I live, I have no pictures from my student band activities, unfortunately they've not appeared on the internet to my knowledge.

Old: 1st on the left (1969-'75) originally called (1966-1968) 'The Sands of Time' then 'The Arthur Band' ( bad name but that was hip then just using names in our area. 'The Jason Garfield Band', 'Benjamin' etc..'Jethro Tull' you get it - None of us were named 'Arthur' BTW. Arthur was in fact an old coot the 3 members of the band worked for when they were lifeguards at a local pool (an inside joke). I was asked in immediately after the whole band returned from Woodstock in the late summer of '69 . . .

New: 1st on the right (2010) at the Great South Bay Festival on Long Island.. (not currently in a band officially now - this was the 'Kerry Kearney Band' my old band by about 5 years)
