Not sure, but I think this is a song about a guy who has his breath taken away.

Agreed but there are some artists that cringe when you bring up some of their past songs.

At 73 yr old does Rod Stewart regret singing "Do you think I'm Sexy?"

Musical Velveeta has been around longer than the processed cheese.

You know these guys have like 4 times the keys than the average band but they are so so wrong. That lead patch though.

I will say Tennille turned into some sort of eye candy after this lame Prince Valiant/Emo Philips do.

That Association song is cool, I think a B level band out of NC covered it in the 1990's.

Double ditto on Rufus!

And say or think what you want about Daryl & Toni but they will always be at the top on my list with regard to the nicest and most caring people I've ever worked for in this sh*tty biz.

Sometime in the middle 80's I was subbing on a gig at the Desert Inn in Vegas for a month with them. I decided to drive up so I could bring my rhodes and bike with me to practice during the day, and get in some early rides before it got too hot.

Well my '80 something Toyota pickup broke down about 50 miles out of Barstow. There wasn't any decent repair facilities around so I had to be towed back to Barstow. This was 2 days day before we opened, so I was freaking out ! I called the road manager and within an hour he called me back saying they were sending a van out to get me. Within 3 hours they picked up me and all my stuff. It took almost a week for the repair. They not only paid for the repair but for the guy to drive my truck out to Vegas and then a rental for him to get back. They barely knew me, I wasn't the regular guy ! I had only done one rehearsal with them in LA. This is literally unheard of in those kind of circles.

Musically...man they were harmless. wink And both were huge Jazz fans.

Not at all! One man's meat, etc. etc.

I have my own "guilty pleasures", but must confess this track isn't one of them.

I of course recognize the cheesy nature especially given the catalog of Perry Como, but I think there is something about him that can almost make it "do no harm" in my mind, which probably carries over to a lot of other folks opinions of other groups.

My dad was a WWII vet and I was the youngest of all my siblings. I grew up listening to my dad's music and not appreciating it at the time, but since the 17 years since he's passed (and the few years since my mom passed), I find myself really enjoying Glenn Miller, Perry Como, Johnny Matthis, of course along with the obvious choices of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, etc. I could go on, but I'm surmising that my personal feeling could be paralleled with other peoples' feelings for other music, despite it being technically "good" or not.

In 1977 this group was nominated for five Grammy's and won two for this. It won Best Vocal Arrangement over "Bohemian Rhapsody".

There’s not a thing wrong with this song. Catchy pop, all synths with some good patches. Fat synth bass.

First "real" band I was ever in, that played in clubs with alcohol, was fronted by, and a vehicle for the recent Miss Brevard County, who won the prestigious crown on her looks and her singing this song, which we had to play ad nauseum. And nauseated I was!

I thought she was smokin' hot, but the Captain always bugged me. It seemed like his body was moving around, but his facial expression never changed, kind of like he was possessed by a nonchalant robot.

I was just excited about an all-synth pop song. I think it was the first. The only all-synth hit that preceded that was Gino Vannelli’s ‘People Gotta Move’ but that wasn’t a huge hit like this was. I really didn’t care about the Captain. Or Tennille. Although she was cute.

Wow, great live version. What a tight group....thanks for sharing. I remember hear this song in Jr. High and LOVING it. One of those tunes that just jumped out of the speakers. I always loved those groaning sounds they made before the chorus...

And then there are cringe-worthy performances of great songs, like this one from Bobby Darin singing Sail Away as a patriotic hymn to America. Check out 2:05. You know what I’m talkin’ about.

Wow. I'm almost speechless. Missing the point of the song much? Tone deaf to the lyrics? Painful, astoundingly bad idea.

I probably should spend the day in confessional as I like most of the the tunes posted. Not that they are great examples of musical genius but because I grew up in the 60's and 70's and these songs bring back memories for me. So what song do I utterly hate? Winchester Cathedral by The New Vaudville Band. It makes my skin crawl smile

In the summer of 1966, after a gazillion hours of studio time, "Good Vibrations" started its ascent up the pop charts. It reached #1, but after only a couple of days, it was knocked off its perch by Winchester F$#king Cathedral which stayed #1 for several weeks. This should tell you everything you need to know about top 40 music, past, present and future. The listening public prefers a Winchester Cathedral to a Good Vibrations. If a certain time period has a higher ratio of WCs to GVs, they're just giving the public more of what it wants. The point is to make money, not art. If some art happens to slip through, well, shit happens.

Busch.

This is not a thread about songs we remember warmly because childhood is better than the one billion burdens of being a grown-up.

It's a thread about crappy hit songs.

Winchester F$#king Cathedral, sucked. So did that godawful Chirpy Chirp song.

Kids loved Barney, too....

From the video, it looks like Tennille is playing that fat bass line. Otherwise, I don't know why she would go to the trouble of faking it so accurately for the camera.

But who knows. video accuracy regarding parts and instrumentation has never been a major priority. B3? I'd have to listen with some good headphones.

I'd never heard that Chirpy Chirpy song before - and I listened to a lot of music in the early 70s. What a strange song. It's all happy-sounding chirpy cheep then the lyric says "I woke up this morning and my mama was gone." Was the songwriter happy that mama was gone? I dunno.

And I always thought Winchester Cathedral was a dumb record. It's kind of a parody of 20's style music. but the lyric is idiotic.

"Afternoon delight" however added a new phrase to the lexicon, about which I have some very pleasant memories. smile Not many songs have done that.

I think they are each playing actual parts. Of course we're not hearing them, but those are clearly the actual parts of the song.

I do remember a very young version of myself noticing that Tennille filled out (what I a now know to be called) a pantsuit very, very nicely. I also got a kind of svengali D/S vibe from ol' Capt, and looking at them now has not changed that perception.

But what I don't understand is why people are posting "Love Will Keep Us Together" and not MUSKRAT LOVE, aka one of the crappiest of the crappy songs from the past.

I will rectify this oversight forthwith.

People seemed to use a lot more vintage keys in the old days.

By the way, here are the lyrics to Muskrat Love. Not one of the highlights of American pop composition.

Muskrat, Muskrat, candle light
Doing the town and doing it right in the evening
It's pretty pleasing
Muskrat Suzie, Muskrat Sam
Do the jitterbug out in Muskrat Land
And they shimmy... Sam is so skinny

And they whirl and they twirl and they tango
Singing and Jinging a Jango
Floating like the heavens above
Looks like Muskrat Love

Nibbling on bacon, chewing on cheese
Sam says to Suzie, Honey, would you please be my Mrs.
Suzie says yes with her kisses
Now he's tickling her fancy, rubbing her toes
Muzzle to muzzle, now, anything goes as they wriggle,
Sue starts to giggle

I so clearly remember it being kind of a big deal that "Jefferson Starship" was going to be Starship and come out with a new song that summer, and then the day came when the song came out, and there was this initial, "Oh, new song" excitement for about 13 awkward seconds, and then a long, slow dawning over the remainder of the song that it maybe kinda stank, or maybe even royally stank, we'll have to wait until it comes on the radio again to see, and then, Yup, this song definitely royally stinks with bonus odor-enhancing-crystals for extra suckness.

Agreed...but then the very next song on the record was this well-written little piece of loveliness (with Rebecca DeMornay in the video):

I had last night off and went to watch some friends play. Bad-ass rock and funk band. Hipsters were casually into it. Then band started doing some sonic nonsense, and the song they ended up in was "I Will Survive." Straight-4 disco beat, a pretty literal reading of the song. So, not rock or funk. Straight disco out of nowhere. My buddy (in the band) looked over sort of like, "I know, I know." Apologizing.

But....goddammit. Wouldn't you know it. Every single goddamned hipster in the jernt started dancing, even the bro's. Whole place came alive.

Something about that beat...

I loved disco. The songs may have been cheezy or dumb, but dammit the dance floor was always filled. And isn't that the point? At the weekly jam I'm in, we do How Long Has This Been Going On? It's kind of a modified disco beat. It fills the dance floor too. The bass player often takes a solo in which he does the bass lines from a bunch of disco hits. People recognize most of them. My fave disco tune was always Disco Inferno ("burn that mother down"). smile The lyrics are meaningless, but the music is propulsive and people can't stop themselves from dancing. I always loved the Stones' "Miss You" for the same reasons, but I can never get any of the bands I'm in to play it. 4 on the floor works every time.

Sure, I'm not saying these songs don't get the crowd up on the floor... but that doesn't mean they aren't (compositionally) crappy songs. But one thing I'll save for I Will Survive is that it's got 8 chords, which is at last 4 more than a whole lot of other hits these days.

It doesn't have THE four chords.....but I guess it's ok.....Seriously, the only thing I hated about disco was, as a keyboard player, that era is what to me ushered in the deal where you had to cover everything in the tune that wasn't guitar, bass and drums. so you wind up playing piano, EP, strings, horns, laser sounds, children's choir, etc etc etc........

Paul Carrack. What a unique career. Sang that hit with Ace. Sang another hit with Squeeze, ‘Tempted (By The Fruit)’, Sang more hits with Mike + The Mechanics (‘Silent Running’, ‘The Living Years”), sang his own hit (“Don’t Shed A Tear”).

What a great career as just a vocalist, never mind his huge resume as a keyboardist.

Wow, I never realized that was all the same guy. I v-a-g-u-e-l-y maybe remember that last one, though it didn't really last beyond its day. But the others....what a career.

I was in a blues band that used to do it, and it always filled the dance floor.

Music you like playing in a band you like playing with; enough gigs; decent pay ... getting any two at a time is doable but getting all three together isn't easy. I wonder which one is hardest for most here to do without?

I couldn't do without the first part. I can live without enough gigs or decent pay. But I won't play in a band I don't like playing with or playing music that I don't like. THAT would be pandering.

I played a gig last year where the BL called "Feelings" TWICE at the same event. In case you wondered if I was OK pandering if the pay was OK.

Disco doesn't have to be crappy. I'll be playing this on Sunday:

Cheers, Mike.

There's an old story, attributed to many famous people. The man asks the woman if she will sleep with him for $1 million. She says "For that much money? Of course I would!." He then says "Would you sleep with me for $100?" and she says "Of course not! What do you think I am? A prostitute?" He says, "We've already established that. Now we're just haggling over price."

For enough money, we'll all pander.

"Will you play 'Feelings' for a million dollars?" "For that much money? Of course I would!" "How about $1 and you can look up drunk Russian women's skirts?" "Keep your money. What do you think, I have no morals?? What key and how many times?"

My brother, a guitar player, in response to a comment about selling out: "How much? And where do I sign?"

Yup. I think I've told this before, but I remember being in a group that was looking at managers, and I said that I thought one was potentially crooked, and the guitar player said: "Good. The crookeder the better."

Is this OT now? Seems like I'm pretty good at it. I saw "Ace" summer 1976. "How Long" was a big hit at the time. I also saw him with Squeeze a decade later. Very talented cat.
OK, back to lousy music. wink
