Having just seen them live on Saturday, I'm listening to the back catalog of songs by 3rDegree. Not that there's anything wrong with their most recent albums, Ones & Zeroes [Volumes 1 and 0].

Great, biting lyrical whit, embedded in rich layers of decadent proggy goodness. Not just for breakfast anymore!

Today's earworm - upright bassist/vocalist Scott Mulvahill. Truly a one-man band.

Although just as tasty a performer when he's with other folks.

Now I'm doubly kicking myself that I missed seeing him last week when he was in Baltimore.

Mulvahill sounds hip (his band, too)
thanks for the tip!
[BTW, scientific research suggests that things seem more true when they rhyme thu ]

For me, as usual, I'm flipping between several things.
Lately some Pete Townshend stuff.
Chk these not-so-old perfs from a few yrs back.

PT resurrects an old tradition

Let's see Davey Gilmour do this !
highlights
intro / PT shannels his inner JH / 0:00~1:05
2nd solo / 1:55~3:15 / note esp the section 2:53+
3rd solo-finale / 3:20~end
starting @ the 4:00 mark Pete illustrates his classic "D shapes up the neck as jazzy chord extensions" technique building to a classic feedback moment before he calms back down for an even hipper illustration of that technique

Love me some Pete! One of my earliest influences. Definitely a strong songwriter, first and foremost, in some people's opinions. His guitar playing is more about energy and attitude than straight out technical aptitude. While considered "sloppy", he rarely plays anything that's actually "wrong". Hell bash away, but then throw in a run or two that makes you go, "Ok, he really CAN play".

I like in the first clip how he says "I don't know why I'm not playing a song from my new album... But do we care?" The interview was just as entertaining as the song. Such a clever guy.

Watching & listening to the new live CD/DVD from Circuline. Great folks that I've met at a few shows. It's nice to have folks run up to you outside a show; "DAN! Great to see you again!" and just hug you. Oh, and they can play & sing, too.

Wish they had a video posted from some of the tracks where keyboardist Andrew Colyer is using the Roli Seaboard Rise. That is such a cool instrument, it makes me want to play keys better (as well as guitar & bass). It's as close as you can get to guitar type swells & pitch bends, even better than say Derek Shirinian or Jan Hammer.

New Age-ish tones while on hold with an insurance company... They put you in a trance then catch you with your guard down while you're sedated. Then you wake up after the call and say, "wait -what did I agree to?"
