Keith Emerson's Gear being auctioned

Recommended Posts

There's a picture on Rachel Flowers's website that shows what appears to be a pretty healthy hunk of Moog hardware in the background. If I squint my eyes just right, I could almost convince myself that it looks like a cut-down version of the Emerson model; lacking the top and bottom racks and with the modules rearranged.

Of course, I don't know anything about the context of the photo. She's in the foreground, the synth is in the background, along with a Hammond, a Kronos, and who knows what else. There's a blond guy back closer to the synth, so maybe it's his, not hers.

I just think it'd be cool if she has the tools she needs to do her thing--I think she's pretty damned extraordinary.

P.S.: I just finished listening to a recording of her playing Jaco Pastorious's Portrait of Tracy. I worked that up once upon a time. It's gorgeous and it's a bitch to play. I learned a few tricks in the process. When I had that fresh in my fingertips, I think I could have played it a little better than she does, but not by much, and these days I only remember about a third of it. She pulls it off very nicely, indeed, which is not a trivial endeavor; she's playing something most bass players won't even attempt. And this from a girl who also pounds the hell out of some keys and plays half the instruments known to man (or woman) and does a credible job on everything I've listened to so far. She both scares the hell out of me and has my respect. I'd offer to play bass for her, but she's already got herself...

I'm not interested in someone's ability to program. I'm interested in their ability to compose and play.

This is Keith's Moog while it was being restored by Gene Stopp.

Thanks for the tip on the techies. While its up in WPB, it beats the blind hand-off to electronics guy in Little Havana that used to re-wire the vintage radios in present day Cuba.

Yes, it's a far drive but Tom is legit when it comes to the repairs. They're open 9-5 during the week. Call the number and you'll get Cindy, let her know you are coming. Take I-75 to the Sawgrass to 441, then north until you're in the Lake Worth area. It's in a warehouse park.

Doesn't some of this stuff belong in the Rock & Roll HOF?

Of coarse it does, the problem is space. There's no where to keep all of it when you think of all the other bands.

Yes, I went through that catalog looking at all the merchandise. All those people would want that stuff stored in a museum as well. The thing is, rock stars don't plan for a museum. Look at Prince, he didn't even leave a will.

Someone comes in (a company), buys the entire estate, and sells it in the catalog we saw in the 1st post. Michael Jackson left behind 5 warehouses. Click next link to see it.

We don't know his situation, he may not have had as much as you think. Sure he sold a lot of stuff out a storage place must be 20 years ago. I recall reading in Keyboard Review, possibly before moving to US from England. One thing does grab me, where is the GX1

He no longer had a GX-1. Sold it for parts a long time ago. This equipment is his touring rig, minus the Kronos/OASYS boards and the modular.

IMO, the K.E. Hammond sound is in that dual leslie rack. I hope it goes to someone who knows what it is and wants it.

I never liked the sound of his C3 at the Black Moon era onwards, it sounded pretty digital and low in the mix compared to the classic stuff. Not sure what Goff did to it, or maybe it was just recording methods. I do remember watching the Albert Hall gig on DVD and thinking it just doesn't sound as fat as the 70's live output. I presume the extravagance of banks of custom Leslie's were abandoned for a more low key affordable affair, which would explain a fair amount.

Had the pleasure of seeing and hearing this gear played live and up close at BB Kings for the first Emerson Band tour. I believe Goff rigged it for midi, but the sound was enormous. Not the ELP stuff, but the Nice tunes like Country Pie were brilliant.

When I say up close my table was right in front of the Keith. The Moog solo in lucky man shook the room.

RRHOF wouldn't know what to do with Keyboards. Hard Rock hotels and casinos will probably pick up some of the gear.
They could make a cool display. Create an octopus like hydra thing with a bunch of arms. At the end of each arm, attach a keyboard. Get all the arms spinning and twisting and gyrating in different directions, in a crazy visual cacophony. Get that going and have a video loop of Emerson and his spinning piano going.

Some music I've recorded and played over the years with a few different bands

I have mixed feelings about this, mostly sad. As cool as it would be to own a piece of gear Keith used, a large part of me feels that he should be the only one playing this stuff. I would probably feel different if he was still around and wanted to sell his gear or give it away. Maybe his passing is still too raw for me.

  • 2 weeks later...

Let me know when it's over. I can't bear to watch. There were a couple of things that I had some interest in, but I'm not going up against people with deep pockets.

A roadcase containing a Korg BX3+a Trek II Preamp AND a Kurzweil SP2X for 1500-2000 is a darn fine deal.

I was the lucky man that won this. With everything going for several multiples of the estimate I feel fortunate

The C3 went for $87,500 with commission

The freaking wardrobe case went for around $9,000

That's terrible. And what are you going to do with it. It's only going to matter to a few people anyway.

I would hope his gear would fetch a high price at auction. This is gear that he toured with and recorded with.

I ask the question to Rock Keyboardists: what would a Jimi Hendrix Strat go for at auction? Why? IMHO Because Keith was as important to rock and roll as Jimi was (if not more important).

i am not clear why you would ask 'rock keyboardists' what they think the collectible value is of a Hendrix Strat.

But someone wise on this forum told me Google knows all:

I ask the keyboardists because it appears that some are looking at the auction as a used gear sale rather than historic value. But then again what do you call it when sell a hammond to make room for new gear?

that clarifies.

Being picky with words , replace ' historic ' with speculative/collectible.

Obvious to me from the start, resale speculators were going to rule. Heck, its an auction, not a sentimental giveaway.
