First for Sven's sake: I have searched for a discussion on this without success wink

I was just interested to know if anyone uses a particular solution that gives them a flat workspace to the side of their rig. In my case I use a Roland laptop tray on it's own tripod stand, but I need something a little bigger i.e. something that will hold my audio interface, laptop and maybe even my Key Largo if I don't keep it on the floor.

I was thinking of just buying a cheap single X-stand and rigging up some sort of flat surface on it but wondered if there was some cool custom stuff out there that's not too heavy and is portable smile

What about a small DJ table? Portable, light, and meant for basically exactly your intended use. Or this utility tray on an X-stand: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor...L4MF-adType^PLA

Good suggestions! I may get a new On-Stage X-Stand with the tray if I can't find anything else - I already own an x-stand and was hoping to avoid a double-up but if could fit the bill nicely smile

I use the Ultimate Support HyperStation QR on the floor beside my stand - computer on the top, Behringer P16 monitor mixer on the insert tray, Key Largo on the floor beside it (or vice-versa).

This is one reason I have not gone to laptop etc, the logistics of setting it up to where it's convenient and safe from getting knocked over. Our stages tend to be very small so an extra table is a concern.

To get my mixer off the ground, for a while I put a board under my top keyboard that was a foot or too longer than the keyboard--it came out to be the same length as the larger bottom keyboard. On that shelf I put the mixer.

Unfortunately I tended to forget the shelf at home...anything loose has been an issue for me!

I think I would tend to go with a rack and put a laptop on it. Everything else would go inside the rack (shelves if not rackable). At that point I'd make a little patchbay to help with connections too. Added bonus for a place to set my drink smile

I use a Gator Frameworks GFW-UTL-MEDIATRAY1. Check the measurements for your stuff, but it fits my 15" Macbook, USB hub and audio interface.

There's also a GFW-UTL-MEDIATRAY2 if you're concerned about how much weight you put on the stand.

RocknRoller sells shelves for various sizes of their carts, if you happen to use one or are thinking about it:

If you're looking for thrifty ideas: I use a piece of K&B shelving on top of an X-stand for modules, mixers, etc. Works just fine. If you want some additional security, add some industrial Velcro to the top of the stand and bottom of the shelf.

I have one of those collapsible work benches you find at Home Depot with the clamping tabletop that go on sale all the time for $20. I sprayed it with a can of truck bed liner, now it looks like musician gear.

Speaking of Home Depot, this is what I use...

Husky X-Horse 2.5 ft. Workbench

Quick and easy. Perfect fit for rack cases.

FWIW, I use this for myself. It's just a 1x8 (x36) with a bungee "permanently" attached to the front lip so I can tilt it forward a tiny bit. There is velcro on the bottom, and on my top keyboard-stand arms.

If I'm just using my macbook I'll take a heavy duty music stand and turn it around backwards so the lip is at the back, and slightly tilt it up. Also works great for a small mixer.

If I need to park my mixer, laptop, IEM pack, and other stuff I use one of these, and cover the top with a black tshirt or cloth:

Funny enough, I was just clicking over to post this picture I took today of a little table a drummer showed up at rehearsal with today, way back at the start of this crazy 14-hour music day. Same table obxa just posted....
