Aqib Talib to the Rams? With them getting Marcus Peters last week? Wow.

I'm psyched! The Broncos won a Super Bowl with Aqib Talib coached by Wade Phillips, and the Rams offense is already better than Denver's was that year. With Talib and Peters on defense, I like LA's chances this year. (And let's not forget that they already had Aaron Donald and and Michael Brockers.)

I'm not sure how much gas Sherman has left in the tank after injuries to both Achilles tendons; but if he still can play anything like he used to, we could see a return of the days when the division belonged to the Rams and 49ers.

Best,

Geoff

Raiders need to go after Suh. He would make a good and proper Raider.

Lots of deals in the NFL right now. The biggest story is that Minnesota purged their wealth of quarterbacks and is bringing in Kirk Cousins for a three-year fully guaranteed salary; but the shocker for me is that Green Bay cut Aaron Rodgers's favorite target, Jordy Nelson. Not surprisingly, New Orleans signed Drew Brees to a new deal. More here:

Kirk Cousins plans to sign 3-year, $84M deal with Vikings

Case Keenum expected to sign with Denver Broncos

QB Sam Bradford to sign with the Arizona Cardinals

Jets ‘working on a deal’ for QB Teddy Bridgewater: report

Packers cut veteran WR Jordy Nelson, will sign TE Jimmy Graham

Drew Brees, Saints agree to a new two-year, $50M deal to keep QB in New Orleans

Cardinals release running back Adrian Peterson, extend offer to tackle Xavier Williams

The QB position is going as I expected in free agency.

I'm not surprised that QB Cousins got that deal from Minny. Hopefully, he'll be able to prove that he's worth every dollar. I certainly don't think he'll crash and burn like Brock Osweiler. laugh

Keenum should do well in Denver. The Jets are a good team for Bridgewater to restart his playing career. I hope Bradford gives the Cardinals an entire season.

Players are moving around the league quickly. Gonna need a spreadsheet to keep up with who's playing on which team. grin cool

I'm glad he's getting a good payday with the Raiders. How close Jordy still is to his prime is yet to be determined; but at the very least, he should be a good locker room presence and a strong mentor to the younger players.

Best,

Geoff

Don't waste any time on that diva. Let Dez languish in Jacksonville, Detroit or Miami.

Once he accepts that he'll never win a Super Bowl, he'll retire about 3 years from now. grin cool

We will find out on draft day whether or not the Giants front office has figured out they need a new quarterback.

Draft Night

Will the Bears do something sensible and take Roquan Smith or Tremane Edmunds, or Quenton Nelson, Mike McGlinchey, or maybe Denzel Ward...... or will they be tricky and do something stupid again trying to show genius.

QB 1st pick?

Barkley to the Giants? Or Eli's replacement...?

Who will trade up? Or down?

So many questions...

A rumor gaining a ton of traction is Browns will take Baker Mayfield because Scot McCloughan (former Redskins GM) is a huge Mayfield fan. Scot McCloughan is a draft consultant to the Browns. I would take Darnold over Mayfield. But its the Browns ... So who knows.

Yes, it should be entertaining to watch it all unfold. Will the Browns take two quarterbacks as some have predicted?

And for those of us whose teams underperformed last year, the Draft is the upside. cool

Giants never played Davis Webb, so we don’t know how he is perceived. My gut thinks they think he’s as good as any of the prospects, so they go for Barkley.
They don’t really have any trade partners; Bills aren’t high enough. If Barkley goes 1, they’ll take Chubb. if they do take a QB, I am guessing Rosen.

I wouldn't either .... Not in the 1st round. NFL Ds will pick him like a chicken. He wasn't accurate in college. At least he is a cold weather player.

The running game needs to be better in order to make the passing attack a real threat. Surely, Chucky will shore up that o-line if they haven't already. wink cool

His first pick was an OT. They have one of the best centers in the game, and two killer Gs. Chucky knows...

Adding Doug Martin may help too - who knows? I believe Richard and Washington are more key than Martin or Lynch, though.

Every year, the Packers use the draft to bolster their defense; and every year, the defense winds up being mediocre. This year was no exception, except that the picks were made by a new GM and will be mentored by a new defensive coordinator. Perhaps that will make a positive difference...

Geoff

The NFL is up to its usual tricks... (Political commentary and profanity most definitely included in this link, FYI.)

EDIT: If the link doesn't work for you, it's because the forum has censored the URL, lol. Just write in your favourite four-letter word where you see some stars near the end.

Disregarding the political side which we don't discuss in this forum, I'm glad artists continue to say "no" to the NFL's requests for free entertainment. They certainly don't ask their players to play for free. In fact—from the groundskeepers all the way up to Roger Goodell—I'd be surprised if the NFL has had the gall to ask anyone else to provide services for free. rolleyes

Strictly speaking from an economic theory perspective, it seems to me the NFL is the logical end of the worst excesses of the free market system gone to seed, if you will.

The league, the owners and everyone associated with professional football is now into it for only one reason - the accumulation of personal wealth.

With the way individual players are treated, I might think more would be tempted to seek employment elsewhere...except for the draw of where else could I ever make this much cheddar.

I don't know if I've crossed the line into politics here - that wasn't my intention - it simply seems to me the for a long time now, the promise of personal wealth has squeezed out other motivations in ways I don't see in other professional sports leagues.

But what do I know. I've never played professional sports, I'm just a dumb fan on the outside looking in.

Skins rookie RB season ending injury

The 49ers had 5 guys hurt yesterday, probably no one this bad. Tough way to start. At least Guice got hurt early in the year and should be back for camp next season. Still sucks. Sorry ProfD.

Yep. Not a great way to start the season. We know the NFC East requires a solid running game.

Hopefully, the other RBs will carry the load and allow the rookie to learn from the sidelines.

My bigger concern is the brittle nature of today's athletes. Theyre tearing up knees on basic football plays and doing routine stuff.

I know players are bigger, faster and stronger nowadays. Still, I believe the downside is steroids are making them brittle. I have no medical license or proof. laughcool

Yeah, all the weight lifting and (cough) etc. doesn’t make them ligaments any stronger. The dreaded ACL, especially in a preseason game, is just gut wrenching.

Nice play by Sam Darnold tonight, and Baker Mayfield looked pretty promising last night. I think the Browns might win a few games this year. The current over/under for Browns wins I saw was 4.5. I’d probably take the over. Lot of talent on that team. It would be quite pathetic if they got the 1st pick in the draft next year.

I am watching a replay of NE playing the Eagles preseason game. Brady has been distributing the ball with the same old thoughtfulness and precision. His longevity is amazing. 41 and these guys are still the team to beat in the AFC.

I'm glad to see a deal that practically guarantees that Aaron Rodgers will remain a Packer until he retires. If any NFL player deserves the money, he does:

Record extension for Packers, Aaron Rodgers could reach $180M total

Khalil Mack to the Bears? For apparently two #1 picks? Interesting. Certainly strengthens the Bears D, especially when Green Bay was trying to get him too.
But 2 ones?
I know Gruden said the defense wasn’t that good last year with Khalil Mack. So, now he’s gone, they save a bundle and get picks.

I don't know. On the surface it makes sense too me but no analysts in Chicago expected especially Hub. It's expensive.

I'm skeptical. Bears need a pass rusher bad and Mack is a 27 year old monster who has never missed a game due to injury....but his production fell off last year and the Bears are going to pay him whole lotta money. The Raiders staff should know him better than anyone and they didn't want to pay him what an elite pass rusher is worth. I hope it works out well. I hope they don't rush him on the field if he isn't in game shape and get him hurt.

It looks like Khalil Mack demanded to be paid more than Aaron Donald:

Rams' Aaron Donald signs record 6-year, $135 million extension

That record lasted all of one day.

I was really hoping Mack would wind up with the Packers, but at that price? Maybe not so much.

Even so, I'm not too happy that Green Bay will have to face Mack twice a year.

The first regular season game is the day after tomorrow, so be sure to sign up and get those picks in soon!

Dave, I don't see a point spread in the Pick'em list. Are we betting against the spread again this year?

Yeah, the Falcons offense looked like a one trick pony. In fact, both offenses looked flawed while the defenses looked dominant.

Nonetheless, for all of Nick Foles's failings as a quarterback, he once again demonstrated that he's a better receiver than Tom Brady.

Best,

Geoff

P.S. Sorry about my confusion regarding the ranking of your favorite teams, Dave.

Falcons just don't match up physically in terms of impact toughness. It went how my son said it would..... Really close in the beginning but the Falcons wouldn't be able to close it out in the 4th quarter after 3 quarter of Philly love. That Eagles team has some rough dudes on that Defense.

Man I checked the points for Sunday. Finally some sensibility. All these local homers think the Bears are going to win the conference. Spread had the Bears as 6.5 point dogs. Bears maybe fun this year but .... come on. smile

Giveaway takeaway ratio should be better. Sack production should improve. Not necessarily from Mack but Mack may open things up for Hicks and Floyd, You can't double team everyone.

Hoping for the best.

The Packers were being dominated on both sides of the ball before Rodgers went down. Doesn't bode well for the season.

I didn't watch much of tonight's Rams/Raiders game; but between last night's contest and tonight's, Khalil Mack's reputation got a nice boost.

Dave, my condolences on the Raiders' loss; but congratulations on taking Week One in the Pick'em Pool.

Best,

Geoff

I wonder what Giants fans were thinking last night, if they were watching the Jets and their rookie quarterback Darnold.

Granted the Giants played against a much tougher defense (Jax) than the Jets did (Lions). But when will the Giants again have a bad enough record to allow them to draft a top quarterback?

The only man on the Bears less experienced at his job than the QB is the head coach.

I doubt that anyone on this Forum has ever seen a quarterback put on a clinic as Aaron Rodgers put on this past week. Rodgers has a sprained knee, and was playing with a gimby leg. Unbelievable.

If any New England fans want to mention Brady in the same sentence with Rodgers, I'd say they'd be wrong. Sure Brady has 5 titles, Rodgers has one. But Brady has always had help.

I don't even watch the cry baby Steelers anymore. They're selfish, childish, and under achievers. Ben sucks. 5 turn overs against Cleveland?

I sure hope that Rogers can play the rest of this season. Its a pleasure to watch a real professional.

15 years ago. Brett Farve. Monday Night Football. The day after his father died. Game for the ages. 399 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Yeah I do remember reading about it, but I didn't see it. Of course Rodgers was playing with a gimby leg. Farve had a habit of turning the ball over at the worst possible times. But I loved to watch him play. Never a dull moment.

Thanks, guys, for the Rodgers and Favre respect! cool

I was lucky enough to see both games we're discussing and they were indeed both amazing examples of overcoming adversity.

At this point, it's clear that at the very least Rodgers is heads and shoulders above any other quarterback ever in passing touchdown/interception ratio; and he blows Favre away in that respect. Favre, of course, handily beat all other quarterbacks when it came to durability; and while Rodgers is undeniably tough, he's about average in that regard. Other than those two qualities, I look at them as roughly equal in ability. Packers fans have been extraordinarily lucky to have them at quarterback for over a quarter-century.

Best,

Geoff

Favre was one of the most fun-to-watch quarterbacks I ever watched play, and his gunslinging style really stood out because when he started, the NFL was boring to watch with so many offenses seeming to be governed by a risk management approach. In contrast, I can't really remember cases where someone said that Rodgers blew a game with a careless pass at the wrong time. Considering how much he puts the ball up, that's saying a lot.

I can't think of another quarterback more exciting than Favre. Of course, part of the excitement was that he took more risks. They paid off more often than not, but we all can think of times when they didn't.

Interestingly, despite holding the record for interceptions, Favre ranks 35th on the passing touchdown/interception ratio chart I linked to above—a respectable rank among all the quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. He ranks above Roger Staubach and Eli Manning, for example. This, of course, speaks to how many touchdowns Favre threw, a number which has only been bested by Peyton Manning.

Best,

Geoff

No doubt the Pack has thrived on QB brilliance twice. In related news, the betting world is waiting to see if Rodgers plays Sunday. Big drop off with Kiser.

First half of the Packers game I just knew I'd lost my week 1 Fantasy Football matchup when Rodgers went down.

I had no idea Rodgers would come back in the second half and torch the Bears. Definitely a classic performance. Possibly more dramatic than the aforementioned Favre game against the Raiders.

Packers fans have certainly been lucky at the QB position over a couple decades now. cool

While Lions fans have had nothing but mediocre play at the RB position in the 20 years since Barry Sanders has retired, sigh.

Well, the Vikings never led during regulation; but they tied it up with 31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and no one scored in overtime. A missed 52-yard field goal attempt by Mason Crosby—with seconds left in regulation—could have won the game for the Packers, and two missed attempts by Daniel Carlson could have won the game in overtime for the Vikings; but the final result was a tie.

The Packers start their 100th season at 1-0-1.

Best,

Geoff

Pretty wild. Two ties as of week 2. I am thinking that hasn’t happened in a long time.

It’s going to be really tough for Jameis Winston to get his job back. Fitz is cooking.

The Broncos managed to squeak out a win in the final seconds of the game today. My condolences, Dave. It's tough to watch your team lead all day and then not come out with a win. (Kind of like the Packers earlier today, except they at least wound up with a tie.)

On the plus side, the Broncos/Raiders rivalry is alive and well.

Best,

Geoff

Last, but not least, the Rams appear to be who we thought they were.

They have a league best combined score of 63-13 in two games and are 2-0.

A team needs a quarterback with more elusiveness to get anywhere these days. Eli does not have this anymore - it was painfully obvious to me, all last season.

I wonder if the Jets will outscore the Oakland A's today (http://www.espn.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=380920111). I'm glad the Angels picked up a field goal, to avoid being totally embarrassed in today's game.

Which is the biggest surprise for you after Week Three?

1) There are four teams in the NFL with a 1-1-1 record
2) Three of those teams—the Packers, Steelers, and Vikings—are typically among the best teams of the league. One of those teams—the Browns—is typically among the worst teams of the league
3) The Patriots are 1-2
4) The Dolphins are 3-0

For me, it's #1. I can't remember ever seeing four teams with one win, one loss, and one tie at once. If it's happened before, I doubt it was after overtime was established for regular season games.

Best,

Geoff

At least we know that the Rams are 4-0. wink

It's nice when your second favorite team can help your favorite team by knocking off your fourth favorite team.

I was a bit disappointed in both defenses, expecting a little Fearsome Foursome and Purple People Eater nostalgia to kick in; but the Rams' D eventually came through.

For me, it's #1. I can't remember ever seeing four teams with one win, one loss, and one tie at once. If it's happened before, I doubt it was after overtime was established for regular season games.

Best,

That the Bears are winning the North. That the Bears would be 4-0 if the coach on week 1 had known how to play call with a lead and several defensive play makers who were not yet in game shape and a RB averaging over 5 yds a carry who he wasn't feeding the ball to. The one loss is on the coach for gasing out the defense in 4th quarter. I only expected 7-9 tops!

Congrats to Drew Brees in breaking the record and being #1 in passing yards. thu

However, if ever there was an overt attempt to insure a record was broken during a primetime home game that was it.

The Skins defense played as if they received bonus money for failing to pressure the QB and blowing coverages. rolleyes

Needing 35 yards to break the record and throwing a 62 yard TD right before halftime seemed like something straight out of a movie script. laughcool

Wow indeed! thu

A tale of two weeks:

Mason Crosby rebounds from 5-miss week with game-winning field goal

Mason Crosby, the Packers' all-time scoring leader, was the difference maker in last week's loss (0 of 5) and this week's victory (6 of 6). He followed the worst week of his career with a perfect game. It was moving to see him bounce back!

Other than that, the Packers didn't look very good against the 49ers. I'm just glad they have a bye before facing the Rams and the Patriots back-to-back on the road.

Best,

Geoff

The Chiefs are fun to watch. Mahomes has some crazy arm talent. I could see them playing the Rams in Atlanta. Home field in the AFC playoffs is going to be a big deal.

In addition, the Chargers (loved or not) are 5-2. 14 games between 2 LA teams and only 2 losses. Thats pretty amazing.

Speaking about San Die..the Chargers, I watched most of the London matchup and was taken back when the Titans went for the 2 point conversion at the end of the game. Ok, maybe Vrabel had the gut going for him. But then the Chargers get called for a penalty, ball goes to the 1, and Mariota lines up in shotgun. facepalm
Wasn’t Vrabel on the Pats? Get behind center and quick snap with one of your well-practiced quarterback sneaks. Maybe he wasn’t paying attention to the offense way back when.

I agree, Mike and Dave, it's pretty impressive!

If I recall correctly—before this season began—both Bill Plaschke and Tim Cowlishaw (on ESPN's Around the Horn) picked the Rams to face the Chargers in the Super Bowl.

I'm actually not too surprised about the Rams, as they were already very good last year and went all-in on player acquisitions during the offseason. It would, nonetheless, be pretty amazing if they managed to go undefeated for the entire season.

That said, if they're going to lose one, I'd like it to be next week when they face the Packers. I realize it's not very likely though. In fact:

Wow, that was a tough loss: a kickoff return fumble cost Aaron Rodgers a chance to put together another game winning drive. Of course, if the Packers are going to lose to any team, I'm glad it's the Rams. As a fan of both teams, I think this was a game that could have gone either way.

The last time I can remember the Rams playing against the Packers in the Los Angeles area, the Rams were near at the end of their original California stay. I remember sitting in the stands, being impressed at how many Green Bay fans were in attendance.

Today was no different. Judging on crowd noise, I'd say roughly 30-40% of the fans at the Coliseum were rooting for the Packers. The Rams were even dressed in throwback uniforms of the '90s. I was swept away with nostalgia while watching the game on my TV set.

Best,

Geoff

As far as I'm concerned, Gregg Williams should have been banned from the NFL for life after Bountygate. I'm very disappointed to see him promoted to interim head coach by the Browns after firing Hue Jackson:

A NFL focused on player safety should never have Gregg Williams as an interim head coach

There was 2:05 remaining in the Packers-Rams game at the last kickoff. If there were no return, the Packers (with Aaron Rodgers) would have gotten the ball at their 25 with 2:05 remaining, could have passed the ball in the middle of the field and gotten a clock stoppage at the 2 minute warning, without using a time out.

I think the Packers coach should have instructed the returner to not return the ball, unless forced to do so by a short kick. And I think the Rams coach should have instructed his kicker to kick off a little short so that it did not land in the end zone, to force a time-wasting return.

No doubt, harmonizer, on all counts. There was a good discussion about this here:

We often focus on the final plays affecting the outcome, but it's also worth considering that the Rams margin of victory was due to the first points they put on the board: the safety.

If they cannot lure Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley from college football to become their head coach, the Browns will probably look for the 2nd coming of Sean McVay who is being heralded as a coaching wunderkind.

I wouldn't be surprised if New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels isn't on the Browns list of head coaching candidates. Not that McDaniels wants to leave Foxboro.

It will be interesting to see who the Browns ultimately hire to lead their young talent. cool

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. wink )

Seriously though, I'm confident that the Browns will eventually become winners again, and they probably have the talent to do so now; but the organization itself is so dysfunctional that I'm not sure we'll live to see a great Browns team.

I'm also pretty confident that you're right about Williams not getting the permanent HC job, and I hope he'll get canned by the next HC. Even so, it bothers me to see him get a job as water boy in the NFL, let alone as an interim HC.

By the way, congrats on taking a four game lead in the Pick 'em Pool, ProfD. I'm struggling just to be in third place behind you and Dave this year.

This was a surprise. On the face of it, I'd call it an overreaction; but there's always behind-the-scenes information we're not aware of:

Over reaction? Ya think? I'm not so sure. idk

He threw a temper tantrumon the sidelines about the way he was being used towards the end of the Rams game. He was told to take a knee in the end zone with that fateful kickoff. He diecided to run it out to show everybody...and he fumbled the ball, and cost his team the game.

No way he was ever going to take another snap as a Packer. hand

Ty Montgomery had a very bad day without a doubt; but he had a good career with the Packers overall, highlighted by switching from wide receiver to a dual threat running back when Green Bay needed one. As a fan, I was upset with his actions in Sunday's game; but I was happy with his play up until that point.

I think it's worth considering Ty Montgomery's explanation of what happened. Apparently, he choose to return the kick because was worried that he might take a knee on the half foot line:

http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=25121203

Obviously, that doesn't cover the way he behaved on the sideline; and regardless of why, he made a poor choice on the return. I just think there may be more to the story than we saw.

Best,

Geoff

Steelers-Panthers Thursday Night Football. 52-21 Steelers.

I listened to the game on the radio last night, and watched the highlights this morning. That's the most points the Steelers have scored in years, and the best game they played as long as I can remember. Carolina made some mistakes that led to Steeler points, but the game was not as lopsided as the score would indicate. Carolina moved the ball but was unable to put it in the end zone on many of their drives.

The Steelers Defense is looking better, there was nowhere to go but up. Ben was 22 for 25 for 328 yards and 5 touchdowns. That was the best game he's had in 10 years.

My opinion from watching the game is that it looked as lopsided as the score indicates. laugh

Sure, Carolina moved the ball at times but for the most part, the Steelers defense had Cam Newton in a pressure cooker throughout the game.

Also IMO, the Panthers have a one-dimensional offense. The major threats are the QB and RB. They do not have game-breaking WRs. The unimaginative play-calling doesn't help either. rolleyes

Defensive coordinators should already know from Super Bowl L how to shut down Carolina. The Steelers went there last night and pulled out a can of whup azz. grin cool

The Bears look good today. Except for Cody Parkey, who has hit the four uprights FOUR times now against the Lions. Weird. Never seen anything like that before.

...and it's so bad that the Bears elected to go for a two-point extra conversion when they were leading 32-10 with the fans cheering when they heard of the decision. Wow.

I was kind of looking forward to the Saints at Cowboys later this season.
Too bad for Dez, the Saints are on a roll.

Ken maybe it was just being merciful- missing 5 is worse than 4. Tough day for a kicker, though hitting the upright that many times is something.

Unlike any other position on the team it's usually not just a "tough" day, but a "last" day as well....

I thoroughly enjoyed watching New England get their butts kicked yesterday. Brady was sacked, rushed, and threw 18 incompletions when they stopped counting and showing it on the screen. A few former Patriot players including Dion Lewis and Malcolm Butler are now on the Titans football team and enjoyed giving it back to New England.

In other news, apparently Bell is not going to report to the Steelers, so he will have to sit out the season. Good riddance.

That's really bizarre. It's rare for kickers to miss so many attempts. You may remember last month's bad day for Mason Crosby against the same team:

Packers' Mason Crosby misses 13 points (4 FG, PAT) in 8-point loss

The fact that it happened once was a freak occurrence; but twice?

Best,

Geoff

Yeah, that's strange. But missing AND hitting the uprights four times in a game....I wonder if this is some sort of NFL record?

Anyway, the Bears look good, certainly much better than last year. They look energized. But they also look really green sometimes, especially where Trubisky is concerned. Still, though, a huge improvement from last year. And they're a lot of fun to watch.

True, the missing AND hitting part is especially strange.

Congrats on the Bears' season so far, Ken. The division is theirs to lose, at this point!

Thanks. Obviously, I'd be really happy if they got in the playoffs, given how abysmal they've been in the past few years. But regardless, I'm super happy with how much they've improved, and how exciting they are. And I feel like they are playing Chicago Bears defense again. As for the division, who knows. I know better to bet against someone like Aaron Rodgers, and the Packers have had the Bears' number for eons now, but I dunno, maybe it'll go alright.

The NFL made a wise decision to move the RAMs-Chief's game to LA. Mexico City is an arm pit and their stadium is a mess. The field is trashed and the NFL needs this game to be played on a decent field.

I bet they will have excellent TV viewing audience too. Should be a good one.

Redskins QB Alex Smith breaks two bones in leg against Texans

This is the same injury Joe Theismann endured. I sure hope it doesn't similarly end Smith's career.

Thanks brotha Geoff.

Yep. Losing our starting QB was a terrible blow to the team.

Pass protection sucked real bad especially against the Texans defense. I don't know what the coaching staff was thinking.

Colt McCoy is a veteran in the Skins system. I'm hoping he can pull through the way Nick Foles did for the Eagles last year. cool

I really wish the Redskins would have at least tried out CK. Signing him would have changed the entire NFL community on their perspective of the Redskins, image wise.

Yeah, Dave, I wished the same from the Packers last year when Aaron Rodgers was injured.

I guess it's best to leave it at that, unfortunately, as the subject has already been politicized...

I don't know. I saw him play in 2016. He was bad. I think D-coordinators figured him out at the end of the 2016 season. People just followed and tweaked the Hoodies game plan in 2016. The day I saw him he lost his job to Blaine Gabbert who played a little better. We sucked. We had the absolute worst secondary in football and we held CK to 1 for 5 passing for a total of 5 yards passing. Weather was bad that day though but Arizona crushed him too. D-Coordinators figured him out. You have to change CKs game. But I don't know, the 49ers were a dumpster fire in 2016. I think he would be signed if he had real production potential.

Simply amazing! thu cool

The LA area certainly needed a break from the tough events of the last couple of weeks, and this game was a great lift for Rams fans.

It was:

1) The highest scoring Monday Night Football game of all time
2) The third highest scoring NFL game of all time
3) The only NFL game ever in which both teams scored over 50 points (and therefore, the only NFL game ever in which the losing team scored over 50 points)

The score makes it look like there was no defense, but the defense of both teams scored. There was great play from both offense and defense of both teams. At moments, I felt like I was watching the old Fearsome Foursome again.

I lost track of how many times the lead changed. My opinion as a Rams fan is that these two teams couldn't have been more evenly matched.

Best,

Geoff

I think there are worse QBs starting in this league right now than CK. A guy I went to HS with was a coach at Nevada when CK was there. All he would say is he is not surprised he isn't signed. Baltimore was going to have him in but his lady started posting on social media and whatever she said it ended up that she was blamed for the Ravens backing off.

I like Sanchez. He is great guy to have in the room. He should be a QB coach. I guess he probably doesn't want to put in coach's hours for coach's pay.

Hey PROF D I heard about the injury to Alex Smith. That's really too bad. He has been doing a great job for your team. One of the Sportscasters said you won't find a nicer guy than Alex. He has always been approachable and wasn't nasty to the Media. (Even though sometimes they deserve it!)

I hope this doesn't completely ruin your season.

I'll be very surprised if Mike McCarthy is the Packers' coach next season. It's one thing to miss the playoffs because Aaron Rodgers was injured; but missing the playoffs this year with Rodgers under center will probably be the last nail in the coffin for McCarthy.

(I realize that Green Bay hasn't been eliminated yet, but it's almost certain with tonight's loss. The only thing they have left in their favor is that most of their hardest games are behind them.)

Best,

Geoff

Tell me Geoff, does the private ownership of the Packers affect the amount of $$$ they have to sign top Free Agents to give the team some weapons?

I don't know that the Packers have the players it needs to compete.

AFAIK, Green Bay's only limitation is the salary cap. The fact that they're finally paying Aaron Rodgers what he's worth probably enters into what they have to spend on other players.

I'm not sure the Packers have the players they need to compete either. They're decimated—both by injuries and from trading two of their starters a few weeks ago (Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Ty Montgomery) for future draft picks. They also got rid of Aaron Rodgers's favorite target, Jordy Nelson, before the season began.

The team is currently winless on the road, which doesn't bode well in the very unlikely chance that they make the playoffs as a Wild Card team.

Best,

Geoff

A little under 20% of the $177 million cap goes to Rodgers.

Unless Rodgers is done with McCarthy, I don't believe he will be fired after the season.

If Rodgers still wants McCarthy around into the future, they will draft and bring in free agents to shore up the missing pieces.

I cannot think of any coaching candidates capable of stepping in and taking over the chemistry McCarthy and Rodgers have built. Maybe they will force him to hire an offensive coordinator.

I'm usually not a fan of recycling head coaches but in the event McCarthy does get fired, Snyder needs to land Redskins One jet in his backyard and make a pitch to bring him to DC. grin cool

I'd like to see Green Bay be more competitive, Rogers is still young enough to make the throws, but father time and injuries always win.

My brother was a New York Giants fan while he was still on the planet, and when they beat the Patriots in the SB, they won my admiration. My Steelers could never get past them. We may have a repeat performance this season.

Thanks fellas. thu

Now, I'd really like to know how and why the Skins thought it was smart to sign LB Reuben Foster after he was waived by the 49ers. idk

While our LB corps may be in need of help, I don't see this cat as the answer considering the amount of trouble he seems to find. cool

I spoke with Doug Williams about this today. smile
Odds of him ever wearing the burgandy and gold on the field are slim to none. However, if he does come up clean, as small as a possibility as that is, he won't be wearing a helmet with a star on it. wink

Dan Snyder is taking a LOT of heat for this in the national press today

Thanks Geoff. It will take less turnovers and more consistent play from the Steelers, in addition to luck. They lost to Denver, a game they could not afford to lose. Considering their up coming schedule, the Steelers will be watching the SB on the tube like the rest of us.

Happy Birthday to our Bro Prof D. Still upgrading your KB rig. Buy yourself a BD present! How about a Moog One!

Cheers!

Pretty impressive defensive effort from the Cowboys. Leighton Vander Esch is a fun player to watch, keeps going. Now the Rams are back in control for home field as the #1 seed.

I tried to add a link but failed. Chiefs have released Kareem Hunt. Another abuse issue- with a video released from TMZ. It’s an old video, did the NFL see it before.? Another mess. It’s pretty messed up. These kids need guidance.

Chiefs released him because he lied to them when first asked about the events. He would have been upfront he would have kept his job barring a permanent ban from the league.

Interesting Geoff.

The Steelers lost their second game in a row, after being one of the Top 2 teams in the AFC to get a first round bye in the Playoffs.

The Steelers will not fire coach Tomlin, and I'm on board with retaining Mike Tomlin. The only suggestion I have for coach Tomlin is he needs to clamp down on the Social Media nonsense that has been going on in Pittsburgh for several years.

Play football. All the rest is B.S.

McCarthy will not be unemployed for too long. He can use the success Andy Reid is having in KC as a beacon into his potential future.

OTOH, I hope that Rodgers gets the coach he wants in GB. It will be interesting to see who's capable of turning that time around.

I'm surprised the Packers didn't dump kicker Crosby at the same time. Unless he was paid to miss that last kick. grin cool

Ran across this tidbit today.
In each year that Pete Carroll coached the Seahawks, they had one game that ended in a score that's never occurred in NFL history. Yesterday it happened again.

2010—Seahawks 36, Cardinals 18
2011—Seahawks 36, Giants 25
2012—Seahawks 58, Cardinals 0
2013—Seahawks 43, Broncos 8 (Super Bowl XLVIII)
2014—Seahawks 36, Packers 16
2015—Seahawks 39, Steelers 30
2016—Seahawks 37, 49ers 18
2017—Seahawks 46, Colts 18
2018—Seahawks 43, 49ers 16

The Bears certainly are looking a lot like Da Bears™ these days.

And how about a couple of those final plays yesterday? The Dolphins surprise touchdown on their desperate pass play, and Amari Cooper's touchdown catch off the deflection in overtime were both plays that rarely succeed. Regardless of who you were rooting for, they were a sight to see.

Amari Cooper has turned the Cowboys' fortunes around, just like Khalil Mack has done for the Bears. Tough losses for Raiders fans. My condolences, Dave.

Best,

Geoff

The Fading Steelers played down to their competition again by losing to the Raiders yesterday. They lost their last 3 games and will be watching the Super Bowl at the same place I will be watching it. At Home. What a pathetic bunch of losers.

It was such a bright green color that it made it harder to detect when the quarterback had actually handed off the ball to a running back, or kept it. Given Wilson's running ability this represents a real threat. I wonder if the Seahawks realize this, and if they might bring back these uniforms for another key game to try to exploit this advantage.

The Charger's Receiver was WIDE OPEN in the End Zone. Blown coverage, big time.

That was a good win by the Chargers. I thought it might be a close game, but to beat the Chiefs is quite an accomplishment.

Soooo.....if the Chargers can make it to the Super Bowl, who is going to show up?

The Bears have clinched the NFC North and the playoffs with a win over the Packers. Good, solid game by the Bears, with Trubisky looking a more comfortable and more accurate than the Rams game.

The Steelers finally were able to beat the Patriots. I had no idea this was a Leap Year. smirk

A nail biter.

Steelers Defense rushed Brady, even though they only sacked him once. Brady threw a lot off his back foot in the 4th quarter. I bet this is Gronk's last season. He looks hurt.

Artie Burns (apparently) was the DB that blew the coverage on New England's first possession and allowed number 15 to be wide open and score. Embarrassing. Mike Tomlin benched him. Best defensive game Pittsburgh played all year. It was win or sit home.

Thanks. They may even have a puncher's chance of winning it all, as crazy as that seems. But regardless, this has been by any measure an amazing, successful season for the Bears. And a FUN one.

Boo.... Hiss! Not a fan of the Seahawks. They waived our neighbor boy. Been watching him play ball since he was little. Seahawks needed to call up O line help after a OL injury.

Too bad Malik missed his senior college season due to injury. Hoping the Seahawks take him back if he passes waivers. He is a great young man.

It’ll be a shame if the Steelers don’t get in, they’ve played some good football recently. That Philly magic might be fun to watch too if they get in.

On that note, it’s going to be a very interesting playoff season. Every team has looked flawed at one point or another. If I had to guess now, I’d go with New Orleans (home field + bye) and KC, but idk

I'm a life-long Steelers fan. This team makes too many mistakes for a Veteran team. They lost a lot of games that should be easy wins. They could have beaten the Saints, but made some bone headed plays, and had turnovers. They're going to be watching the Super Bowl at home this year.

Some of the talking heads suggest it's time for HC Tomlin to be relieved of his duties.

I'm curious to know what a life-long Steelers fan thinks about the future of the team.

With unimaginative play-calling and bad personnel decisions, I definitely think the Skins need to part ways with HC Gruden and GM Allen. cool

Mike Tomlin's not going anywhere. Some Steelers fans have short memories. The first AFC Championship Game in Pittsburgh when Bill Cowher was coach was 21-0 in favor of New England before all the fans were in their seats. I think Tomlin is a better coach, but some of the players are idiots. Spoiled 21st century athletes that have been catered too their entire lives. Not all of them are focused on football.

Tomlin didn't play a down. The Steelers beat themselves. Too many mistakes for a veteran team.

Haven't injuries to the Redskins been their biggest problem? A couple of QB with broken legs don't make life easy.

I hope you're right about Tomlin's continued tenure at the helm of the Steelers. I think he's one of the best head coaches in the league. He wouldn't be unemployed for very long if the Steelers parted ways with him.

Injuries have plagued the Skins. That may be Gruden's saving grace. But, I still wouldn't hate to see both him and the GM go elsewhere. cool

Hall of Fame Receiver Cris Carter has an excellent Sports Show with Nick Wright and Jenna. Its on Fox and youtube "First Things First". I have a great deal of respect for Cris, he is a highly intelligent man and knows the game. He believes Mike Tomlin is one of the best coaches in the league. I agree. He's HC of the Steelers the last 12 years and has never had a losing season.

I watch his Press Conferences most every Tuesday. The man is in charge and knows the game. The Steelers have had 3 coaches in the last 50 years. Let the cry baby Steelers fans that are calling for his head stick their heads in a bucket of water. He's not going anywhere.

Time for the postseason firings:

The Browns already fired Hue Jackson and so did the Packers with Mike McCarthy; but today, the firings resumed in earnest. Marvin Lewis and Cincinnati "mutually agreed to part ways," the Broncos fired Vance Joseph, Steve Wilks was canned by Arizona, Adam Gase was let go by the Dolphins, the Jets fired Todd Bowles, and Tampa Bay got rid of Dirk Koetter.

More here:

NFL coach firings: Who's gone, openings, and candidates

Wilks and Gase got shafted. Exactly what was Wilks supposed to do with that dumpster fire. Koetter firing is fine he is a back stabbing D bag.

Being that the Steelers rolled over and died, I do believe that The Eagles will roll into Chicago and beat the Bears. Why? The Eagles have an excellent roster. The Bears are going to run the ball. If they get behind, they're screwed. Both their starting Receivers are hurt. I'm picking Philly.

Unfortunately, New England is the number 2 seed in the AFC,and gets a Bye week, again. facepalm
I'm so sick of seeing that team play at Home during the playoffs, I could puke. I sure hope someone beats them, if not its going to be a boring SB. The NFC will smoke NE if they're in the big game, again.

Agreed. I feel bad for Marvin Lewis. I heard an interview on ESPN radio this morning, and he said he "Failed to deliver a Championship". He has had his problems with Quarterbacks being seriously hurt and unable to play on more than one occasion. Marv is a good guy and deserves to be a coach in the NFL. Maybe Mike Tomlin should hire him so he can fire that nitwit Butler.

I'm not surprised by the end of season coaching carousel. It doesn't look like my team will be playing. rolleyes

I do think it's unfortunate that Wilks was dealt a terrible hand in AZ. IMO, ownership was never committed to him.

Undoubtedly, these former HCs (head coaches) will land gigs as coordinators or special assistants.

Supposedly, Gase could be interviewing for the AZ job. Rebuilding that team stats with a firm commitment of time and investment of money on behalf of the Bidwells.

The Dolphins need a QB. It would be a great landing spot for Nick Foles who will be a free agent. Of course, that depends on who they hire as HC.

The other teams only need a regime change and to bring in a few players to make them more competitive. Next season will be interesting.cool

unless, of course, Philadelphia wins another Super Bowl with him as quarterback. Would a team not resign a quarterback that won 2 consecutive Super Bowls? Inquiring minds want to know. cool wink

The Bears are favored in Sunday's game against the Eagles, but that's the Super Bowl winner with Foles, so this seems to be a very dangerous game here for the Bears. Should be a great, competitive game regardless.

Giving coaches a one year contract is a dead giveaway that they are not committed to anything other than bringing in a new person to manage the players that they are already playing. Take a look at the Organizations that fired coaches. Those teams are a mess, changing a coach to manage the same mess is the definition of insanity in action (or in-action).

Surely, the Eagles would want to keep a clutch back-up QB. But, the question becomes at what price.

Nonetheless, I do not believe the Eagles will survive the playoff gauntlet this year. They don't have to worry about Foles winning another Super Bowl ring.

The bigger question is how long Foles wants to continue playing football. cool

If I'm not mistaken, the Eagles gave Foles a decent contract extension after last year's SB win. I don't recall the details, but he doesn't have to play an entire season and gets paid more than enough money for being a reserve. That means he should be able to WALK after he retires from football, unlike workhorse Earl Campbell that can hardly even stand. The poor guy ran his tail off for years and has no quality of life.

A great story in the making is IF the Eagles do beat the Bears, the next week they’d play New Orleans, the team that blew them out 48-7 back in November. Of course that was with Wentz at QB. Not likely, but what a story..

Bracket Predictions from CBS Sports

These guys have the Bears going against the Saints in the NFC Championship (but losing). They also have the Saints losing to the Chargers in the Super Bowl.

If the Bears actually go this far, this would be amaaaazing. With a first-year coach and an almost rookie QB who is rather green, this would be something. As it, I seriously doubt too many people had the Bears going this far at all. I sure didn't, although I thought it would be a fun year, and that it has been.

The Bears have a great defense, but are really unpredictable, particularly Trubisky, so it's hard to know. They are good enough to beat anyone, but running the table all the way to the Super Bowl is might be asking them to be more consistent and less prone to silly mistakes that they have been.

But regardless, even getting past the defending champions is going to be quite a challenge.

If the Chargers win, the 27 fans in Los Angeles are going to be seriously stoked. Maybe if they can get their friends, they can have, like, 94, 95 people have a parade in downtown.

Seattle has a drop kick style punter. No problem. The fact that he's never really practiced kicking field goals is ridiculous.

IMO, kickers and punters should be able to sub for each other in the event of an injury.

Seattle's punter couldn't even execute an onside kick. confused

Anyway, the Seahawks lost fair and square. They didn't put up enough of an offensive effort through the first three (3) quarters.

The Colts are peaking at the right time of the season. They put it on the Texans. cool

Good. The Seahawks are scarier than the Cowboys.

FWIW the neighbor boy wasn't claimed off waivers and the Seahawks signed back to the practice squad.

That they did. Even the local paper seems baffled by the decision to keep pounding away at a running game that was going nowhere. When they finally opened up their offense to include an aggressive passing game it was simply too late. Not that they didn't exceed all of our expectations for the season as it was! (My wife is a huge football fan, otherwise I'd still be completely baffled by the sport.)

We had a nice civilized crowd at our American Legion Post today and tonight to watch the NFL Games. Steeler fans were routing for the Eagles, we're homers. Foles wasn't really sharp tonight, and made some bad decisions. He tried to throw the ball in the End Zone to one of his players who was triple covered and was picked off. He was better down the stretch and managed to pull off a win.

I don't remember the last time I saw a kicker miss the second try at a kick after he nailed the first kick when the Eagles called timeout. We couldn't believe he missed. I wonder where he's going to be employed next season.

Edit: Eagles' Treyvon Hester tipped Parkey's missed FG. I couldn't see the partial blocked kick from where I was sitting watching the game, and the place went bonkers after we knew the Eagles pulled it off! What a nail biter!

So the Eagles have to go to New Orleans next week. We are hoping for a GAME this time, instead of Custer's last stand.

I believe that the Chargers will be able to give New England a game next week in Foxboro. I'd love to see NE LOSE.

official ruling changed to what I thought all along. The kick was blocked. Block credited to Trevon Hester. Cody Parkey knew it all along.

As a Bears fan, it's been my fear that Parkey would do this during the playoffs. He's missed quite a few, including one November game in which he clanked the uprights FOUR times (two from point-after-touchdowns!).

As much as I feel bad for the guy, I have no wish to see him in a Bears uniform ever again. And yes, I know that last one was tipped, but seriously, he missed almost 1 out of 4 field goals during the season. Time to go.

I know. That's insane. Why would you ever sign anyone this dubious to that sort of a contract? But it comes down to if you want to win games or not. He gave that one away.

And yes, I get that Chicago could have been more potent on offense and all that and not have been put in a position like that. But it doesn't matter. You had a chance to win on a fairly windless 41-yard kick and you clanked it.

I think the Bears have a great defense, but even the defense dominated Bears of old needed Sweetness to go all the way. I'm not saying Parkey shouldn't go, just that the blame might be extended a bit.

As an interesting aside, the ESPN show Around the Horn revealed that Parkey used to practice by trying to hit a lamp post with his kicks.

There’s another angle here, though. Though no one noticed it at the time, Eagles DT Treyvon Hester got a hand on the ball. I can’t tell you if it mattered, or which way the ball might’ve hooked or sliced without the contact, but there’s no disputing it that there was contact. That sure isn't the coach I expected to come to Green Bay.

My son told me today it is a $6 million cap hit to fire him. They can't really afford to release him till next year. The fans are going to be pretty rough on him.

Nor did I, but LaFleur's résumé at least shows some potential. I guess they're looking for the next Sean McVay.

Packers to hire Titans OC Matt LaFleur as coach, sources say

I hope LaFleur can hire as good of a DC as McVay did. The link above, however, states that a source said that LaFleur would like to keep defensive coordinator Mike Pettine on board. Pettine had some inventive schemes, but the defense wasn't improved much over previous years.

Best,

Geoff

From what I've read, Green Bay's all-start QB gets 33 million a year. That's a big chunk of the CAP and leaves less $$$$ to get better players. It's a good thing he doesn't play in New England.

Regarding the block, a 43 yard field goal attempt is not so long as to require kicking it at a long angle to cover the distance. Also, I do not see any indication that the blocker penetrated into the Bears' backfield. So in my opinion it's still a bad kick by the kicker.

I would imagine this hire works for their HoF caliber QB.

Keeping Pettine (DC) and Philbin in some capacity maintains some continuity.

The Packers still need to shore up that defense and bring in a few more O-linemen to keep AR upright. cool

Many agree with you. The fact is that the NFL changed the ruling from "missed" to "blocked", that was my point.

Trevon Hester said he got his finger tips on the ball. One way or the other, the Bears lost that game. Kicker is the loneliest job in the NFL. Miss ONE kick to win a game and end up working in McDonald's.

Best,

Geoff

Yeah, well, he should have practiced getting those kicks between lamp posts more often! grin

There's plenty of blame to go around, but Robbie Gould would NOT have missed that field goal or been 76% for the year or clanked four in one game. But Trubisky needs to improve and become far more consistent and the whole offense in general needs to improve, there's no question.

But the very weak link this season has been Parkey.

This isn't an opinion formed from an emotional response from him blowing the game. It's from watching him clank 'em the whole season. Most of the Bears fans I've been interacting with this season where terrified that Parkey would blow a game in the pre-season because he was such a lousy kicker. He's either the worst or the second worst kicker in the NFL, and that's an important position considering the amount of scoring a kicker does.

I'm also saying this fully realizing that the kick may have been blocked by Treyvon Hester (although one could go round and round with this, as many pundits are saying Heston only got his hands on this because the kick was too low in the first place).

I also want to point out that I'm pleased with the Bears this year. They exceeded most expectations this year and are on their way to becoming a really good team. I am very pleased with their season.

Your opinion seems to be shared by many pundits who have studied that kick, from what I've seen so far.

See my other comments regarding Parkey above. I feel bad for him, but most of the Bears fans I've interacted with have been saying for months that the were nervous about Parkey blowing a big game/playoff game and that he seemed like a really bad kicker, and have been extremely critical of the Bears getting rid of Robbie Gould. And I agree with all of that. I feel bad for Parkey, but he's a bad kicker, there's no way around it, and statistics more than, <ahem> bear that out.

I also want to say again that I'm extremely happy with the Bears this season, and only see positive things moving forward.

Some of them will be, that's for sure.

The Bears will probably need to keep him. That's gonna be a tough pill to swallow if the guy doesn't improve noticeably.

If he puts in the time and improves, Bears fans are a forgiving lot. You see a LOT of Bears fans dumping on him, it's true, but you also see a lot of Bears fans saying they feel bad for him and pointing out that the Bears offense needs a lot of improvement and consistency, particularly Trubisky, while also acknowledging the general improvements throughout the season. There's a lot of hope overall in BearsLand, though, and rightfully so. They had a great season, doing better than most people ever predicted. I mean, few people ever had them sitting atop the NFC Central or beating the Rams.

That doesn't surprise me. In my experience, the midwest has a generally kind and forgiving culture.

I certainly never would have predicted the Bears would have finished better than third this year, at least not until they got Khalil Mack anyway. But then, I also would have never predicted the Packers would finish with a losing record while a reasonably healthy Aaron Rodgers was at the helm.

New coach or not, Green Bay will have their work cut out for them next year. The Bears, Vikings, and Packers are all valid contenders for the top of the division.

Best,

Geoff

Hot off the press is that Bruce Arians will be the Bucs' new HC.

Arians is hiring Todd Bowles (DC) and Byron Leftwich (OC).

Reads like the Cardinals are being reunited in Florida. laugh cool

The news is reporting that Kliff Kingsbury will probably get the Arizona Cardinals HC job.

Kingsbury is the same guy who was fired from Texas Tech. It just seems weird to hire and fire Wilks after one season only to hire someone off a college staff.

I hope that whatever offensive genius Kingsbury supposedly possesses will help Josh Rosen the way McVay rescued Jared Goff.

The NFL HC vacancies are filling up fast. Of course, it will seem like forever before get to see the teams under theilr new or recycled leadership. cool

Heads are starting to roll in Pittsburgh. Two assistant coaches were let go, as in their contracts expired and were not renewed. The most significant assistant was former Steeler Joey Porter. Joey was Linebacker coach, but got himself in trouble when he ran out on the field during a game to argue with an opposing team player. That is NOT allowed under NFL rules. The NFL fined him $10,000. Yikes!

Last season, Porter got kicked out of a Pittsburgh sports bar for fighting.

The Steelers frown upon such behavior. I understand he and Mike Tomlin are good buddies and that might have delayed Porter getting the boot.

The next to get the ax is DC Butler. He's not very bright. I don't know how much input he had in putting together the Defensive game plan against New England, but Butler is about 3 days short of a week.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the LA Rams vs. the LA Chargers in the Super Bowl? They are both fun, uptempo teams to watch. There has never been a Super Bowl played where both teams were from the same city.

Television networks would hate a SB with teams for the same city, except maybe NY City. They like SB with a team from the Left Coast and a team from the Right Coast. They usually get a wider viewing audience when teams are far apart. Of course foreign countries that watch the Super Bowl don't use Google Maps, so they don't care. facepalm

Well, the outcome of this weekend's games was as I hoped/expected.

The Eagles came out swinging in the 1st half. IMO, One Philly INT changed the momentum of the game. I believe the Saints are going to the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs made the Colts look like the Texans of last week. grin

I'm predicting the Chiefs will win next week and go to the Super Bowl. If the Chiefs do make it, I believe they will hoist the Lombardi trophy. cool

Fake punt by NO was briliiant. Who the hell does that in their own territory??? I have to admit - I love that kind of football.

NO D was pretty great as well.

What I don't understand is WHY the Eagles kept playing ZONE in the middle of the field for the entire game. It was NOT working. They were allowing Receivers to catch the ball and then tackle them. They gave up way too may big plays. NO had a defender on every Eagles player down field, once the ball was in the air, another NO Defender would run to the ball to help the player covering the man. I'm sure there's a name for that Defence, but I don't remember.

I don't understand some of the Eagles play calling, especially in the 4th quarter. The one time they got close to NO end zone, they did not throw the ball in the end zone with the game on the line. Plink and Plunk doesn't work when you're running out of time.

Being that my Steelers have not been given a "Get out of Jail card" we were all routing for the Eagles in our American Legion Post tonight. Too bad.

The announcers were mentioning that NO needed to get something going and jump-start the offense. I love that aggressive, out-of-left-field play calling as well.

I think KC and NE really benefited with a bye week and game at home. I think I heard that Brady/Belichick Pats are 12-1 in divisional games after a bye. 13-1 now?

Rams are better than Dallas.

I though the fake punt was great too. Then around the same time a bunch of Philly defenders got banged up. One at a time, but that was odd. I think they all returned at some point in the game, but momentum had changed. Best game of the weekend to me.

The Chargers had to fly across country twice. The headwinds flying home had to make for a long flight home.

No rest, and coast to coast travel is a big disadvantage, the Chargers had a better record than NE but did not win their own Division. So.....they had to travel.

New England was ready to play and rested.

The Saints vs Colts Super Bowl 44, Saints were trailing at halftime. To start the second half Sean Payton surprised everyone by calling for an onside kick which the Saints successfully executed. They scored on that drive to take the lead. Saints won 31-17.

We might have a New Orleans vs New England SB. The weather in KC is going to be winter sub zero awful. Bet that favors New England. I hope KC wins. If I have to watch another SB with the Patriots on the field, I think I'll throw up. Enough of those guys!

Brotha Mike, I think Chiefs will beat the Pats resoundingly despite the weather. Buck stops in KC for NE this year. laugh

Also, I believe the Saints will outscore the Rams in an offensive shootout. If either one of those teams plays solid defense, they run away with the victory. cool

Well see Brotha D. The Pats are a better cold weather team. I do believe KC was looking for more moderate weather so they can take advantage of their speed.

Cold snowy field will slow the game down. I hope the Chiels play Man Defense and put Brady on his back or at least rush him so he doesn't get comfortable.

We are getting a blast of winter here in NE PA too so it might a challenge to get to my American Legion Post to watch the Championship games.I won't risk driving my ride over the mountain on icy roads.

Championship games today. I still believe the Saints and Chiefs will end up in the Super Bowl.

Right now, I'm wondering if those 8 points left on the field will come back to haunt them.

The Rams started out shaky but picked up some momentum on the last drive of the 1st half.

I expect the Saints to put distance between themselves and the Rams in the 2nd half.

For some reason, I've got the Chiefs putting it on the Patriots this evening. cool

I just wanted to see good games today. Mission 1 accomplished. This time the kicker is a hero.
Saints should have won though. Bad no call, calls. I needed to see it later. Geez

Yeah, it's certainly more likely that the Saints would have won had that call been made. I hate bad officiating at crucial points in a playoff game.

It would have been nice for the Rams to have had a definitive victory; but fan that I am, I'm still glad they're going back to the Super Bowl.

Best,

Geoff

I'm gonna go farther and say that the Saints would absolutely have won if that call was made...and I was pulling for the Rams.

What an awful asterisk for both teams.

If it wasn’t pass interference, the helmet-to-helmet hit almost certainly should have been called a personal foul. Either way, the Saints should have received a 15-year penalty and a fresh set of downs with 1:45 remaining, which almost certainly would have effectively ended the game. Instead, the Saints had to settle for a field goal to go up 23-20, watched the Rams tie the game minutes later, then lose in overtime.

Greatest day of football ever? I don’t recall two championship games going into OT. Of course the refs have to bring their own drama. rolleyes
I have been reluctant to throw around the GOAT title, but I just threw my hat in. Tom Brady is going to his 9th Super Bowl. Romo did a good job pointing out changes Brady was making before the ball snapped and saying it’s like having the head coach or offensive coordinator on the field. He played a great game last night.

I still put Vince Lombardi as the GOAT HC, but BB is my 2.

Game outcomes aside, the Sports Talk shows will be going crazy with that over the next two weeks.

The Non Pass Interference call during the Saints-LA game was a disgrace. Its one thing to "Let the Players-Play" and another to not call an obvious penalty at a crucial time during the game.

Pass interference penalties were either called for the minor contact that didn't matter, or not called at all.

Then there was the over-turned KC recovery of an Edelman fumble that was returned for a TD by KC. Over turned when replays clearly showed that Edelman had touched the ball and KC recovered and scored.

I was routing for LA and KC to win their games. Nothing against New Orleans, I like their team and Drew Brees.

It was obvious how the Ref's were betting.

grin That was pretty bad. I don’t think Melissa Ethridge was that great either, but she sure did better than Jimmy. Parrotheads will probably feel differently.

I hate the lack of defensive pressure in the last 2 minutes of games. madrolleyes

I would rather see teams man up and play press coverage rather than play prevent defense; giving up chunk yardage leading to FGs and TDs.

The non-call in the Saints game was horrible and affected the outcome. But, I still contend those 8 points they left on the field in the 1st half doomed them.

The chiefs succumbed to the Brady effect. Their defense could not stop him even without the Pats having a #1 WR threat.

The Rams versus Pats Super Bowl should be an entertaining game. I believe the Pats will win it because they have the GOAT @ QB. Too much offense. cool

The non-call in the Saints game was so bad (how bad was it), that Sportsbook credits Saints bets over uncalled penalty
