Ok, this article about a cute all-in-one modular synth that can also serve as part of a Eurorack system popped up on my Twitter tl, so I figure now's the time to start a thread for modular synth fans. grin

Introducing SoundMachines' MODULOR114

It would be really cool if some of you who have or previously owned modular synths would post demos here for us to appreciate. New modules catch your attention? Tell us about them, too.

Finally, I almost started this thread over a year ago when I first saw this video, so I figure it should be part of this first post, too:

I always mentally made the connection (pun intended) to switch board operators when playing this back in the eighties:

I love the potential for amazing tone with modular synthesis.

But I don't know whether it's my age or what, I rarely see demos that are that amazing. Bleeps and bloops, even in polyrhythm, ain't sh*t to my ears.

The public library in Lawrence, Kansas, has a modular synth that's free for members to use.

Unless you are listening to carefully multitracked and layered compositions as rendered by Tomita or Carlos or their disciples, modular synthesizers are rarely a spectator sport.

They are for hypnotizing yourself turning knobs and hearing the results. It's an immediate gratification. Since we have addictive tendencies, you start simple and then seek to increase your high by turning more things on. I'll start a drone in the background to play over, now put some rhythmic filter sweep on that, and maybe some reverb on the dripping sounds...

Inevitably you end up with rhythmic bleeps and bloops going. grin

The mod squad bids goodbye to one of the all-time legends, Don Buchla, who passed away on September 14. Here he is, performing a duet with Alessandro Cortini back in 2010:
