Now deceased, one of the older Italian Quik Lok two tier double X-stands with most impressive aluminum turnbuckles for the second tier and scaled aluminum center lok.

The horizontal that the lower (read heavier) keyboard sits on snapped right off at the welds.

An X-stand is only as string as its welds. And now looking at where the legs meet the "arms" and "feet" I notice that the welds were just little spot welds on either side of the legs.

Danger Will Robinson!!

Put an 88 on those arms and play hard(Boogie Woogie? McCoy Tyner?) and you're done.

(Not mine and I didn't witness the actual collapse...live on air, but it made me take a look at my Quik Lok slightly custom triple tier and...whew...the newer ones have full lateral welds.)

X-stand user?

Check those welds!!

I’ve said this before, there are two types of X-stand users, those who have had their X-stand collapse, and those who will have their X-stand collapse. Unfortunately, I am a member of the former group...and no longer an X-stand user.

I have the worst kind of X-stand. There's a hand lever that you squeeze to move a little spring loaded metal nub from hole to hole. It is begging to fail. Literally begging. I hardly ever use it, but when I do, the danger aspect is simply thrilling. Talk about a rush! Never knowing when it will happen...will tonight be the night? Will I make it through?....Damn, talk about excitement.

Actually, I have a strap that when opened to the right setting is tight between the upper section, preventing them from opening any further in the event the little metal nub fails. Not perfect, but piece of mind.

As a two tier QuikLok Z-stand user, I see welds at the points that connect the segments of the "Z" together. They're good solid welds (not spot-welds), but it sometimes makes me a little nervous.

I have a proline double braced X-stand and noticed that the bolt had come loose that holds the two braces together. I only noticed it because the bolt barely went through. When i examined it to try to understand why, that is when I noticed the nut/bolt holding the braces together was significantly loose. But still never had a fail and I've been using one of mine for over 20 years on gigs with heavy keyboards.

Yes, X-stands seem to be quite prominent in "keyboard fail" videos:

I have that same stand and never had a problem either, even with heavier boards like my FA08 or when I had my Yamaha XS70. I think the kind with the pin that goes thru the hole to adjust the height is OK, there is not much to fail on those. The ones with the serrated gear kind of adjustment, I wouldn't trust.

Well, I have one X stand (brand Torrefiel from Spain I believe) being used every day since 1991, lots and lots of gigs and trips to multiple rehearsal spaces. Today it holds my Kurweil Forte. Solid as a rock.

My Ultimate Double X stand has lasted for over 20 years, lucky! After seeing the above video of X stand failures I need to buy a new stand. Does anyone have any reservations about this Z stand: http://www.guitarcenter.com/On-Stage-Stands/KS7350-Keyboard-Stand.gc

Darcity,

I use an On Stage Heavy Duty Double X. I've gigged it for 15+ years with an RD700 and then an FA08 on the bottom, an NE2 in the middle and a Micron on top. Never a hint of a problem. cool

Still, I have a safety rope for peace of mind. smile

And then there's the X thrones.
Most of which have a padded seat on top of particle board. Yes, particle board!
We had a gospel pianist that weighed over 200 lbs. come in for a session and he sat on an X throne and after just a few minutes BAM!
Straight to the floor, sprawled out like he was just shot. Not pretty but fortunately he was unhurt.

So far, I'm happy with my Quik-Lok double X but prefer not to use the X throne. They're too unstable and tend to rock out from under me.

I have the Quiklok QL-742. I thought my stand was sturdy until I saw these videos but then again, those may be cheap X stands.

OTOH, y'all giving me a reason to buy the Quiklok QL-726 or the Black K&M Spider Pro!laugh
