Got my renewal notice for GP magazine it's $18.99. I can get a new subscription for $14.99. Is that how you treat a customer? This is my first renewal it kinda .pissed me off.

That's like cable TV. The first year is only $29.95/month. Once you're hooked it goes up to $139.95/month.

Same with AT&T...you sign up and bundle your computer and phone and agree to hang in there for two years. You figure you can renew at the end and be rewarded for sticking with your agreement. At the end of two years your only award is getting to pay double what your were paying and only new customers get the new come-on ad rates! I'm sure glad I didn't bundle my TV in the deal. Now I can quit and go landline and wifi-less and run the computer off of my new cell phone in a month or so LOL! cool

Still again Surfergirl, compare the single issue cost against the renewal to see which is lower. Four bucks might not seem so much then. But yeah, it does bite that they did that. And it's not that bad comparatively. For example....

I got a grandnephew a subscription to HIGHLIGHTS magazine last Christmas. Can't remember the cost, but the renewal was MUCH higher than $4.00 more.

Their subscription offers vary. Yeah, they should've taken the higher road with a lower re-subscription price for you, though...

Let it lapse. They'll offer you $14 again eventually.

Let your subscription lapse. You'll miss a few issues, but they'll eventually give it to you for $9.95.

I have the same thing with an outdoor magazine I put on an auto renewal. I am going to stop it next year and wait a few months then start it again but not on auto renew. The loyal customer should get the discount. Jim

I think I'll go digital, $14.99 for 2 years, I'll get it right away. Print media is nearing the end anyway.

I was going to suggest digital, you beat me to it. If you are traveling it's a good way to go.

Don't be so sure.
It has several benefits online lacks.
Both are important.

Truth. I keep a shelf full of previous editions of Guitar Player and Electronic Musician magazines, and I often refer to them, for info on old gear, or to review Music that's printed in those old issues. In many cases, that information is either unavailable, or deep in some website rabbit hole, if I go searching online.

Slightly different take: Recent studies show that our brains process information differently, depending on whether we read it on a printed page, or in an e-book format. It seems that people retain more info from the printed page, although that may change as we grow more used to purely digital media.

Is there stuff included in the print that's not in the digital?

Not in the current issues, AFAIK. It's even more likely that you'll get additional web links with the digital sub.

However, as much as we hear that 'anything you put online is there forever' that doesn't apply when someone controls the content or our access to it. Not long ago, this entire Forum disappeared without a trace, because the folks who control the content decided to close it. Obviously, we're back, but that's one glaring example.

I find that for past issues, there's very often material has never been uploaded, like gear reviews, or material that gets cycled out over time. You go looking for a link that you knew was there last week, or last month, and it's been removed or replaced. And in the event your favorite gear mag shuts down altogether, it's likely you'll have lost access to all the information that was stored on the site, unless you've downloaded and backed up every digital issue. If GP shuts down tomorrow, I can still find the old copies on my bookshelf.
