New free app. It's a ROMpler app (DX7 and TX multisamples), not a FM synthesis app. The dev did throw in a resonant filter, reverb, and other FX. He says it was "sampled from custom patches from a DX7, DX7 II from electric lady studios in NYC (rumored played by David Bowie himself while he was in the studio), and a Tx81z. Plus, dozens of the best original presets as well. Cheers"

Not surprisingly, there was initial resistance on the iPad Musician group due to it being "just a rompler" (the dev anticipated that and so decided to make it free), but it seems to have given way to overwhelming enthusiasm.

Tried it out last night... sounded pretty good!

The Korg Module 80's Piano has some good EPs,but it was nice to see a broader selection of FM sounds.

Thanks for sharing...

This is really more of an example app than a full product. In fact, it's aimed at people like me who have sample libraries and would like to see them on iOS but without a huge investment in development, be that time, money or both.

Here's what SynthAnatomy wrote:

"As you know, the Internet is full of various sample libraries of small or larger developers. Especially a website like Kontakt Hub is a perfect place for such product and companies. With the new AudioKit code, developers can create very fast music apps based on their own sample libraries and sell it as a full playable music app on the Apple App Store. In my opinion a code that fits perfectly into this world of independent sample libraries and will offer new possibilities to developers and iOS musicians."

ROM Player Code Features

- Beautiful sound engine
- MIDI input for notes, pitch bend, mod wheel, after touch
- On screen “Piano” keyboard that can be customized
- Reverb, Bitcrush, AutoPan, Stereo Fatten, more…
- Analog Tape Ping-Pong Delay with cool speeding up/slowing down effects when changing time
- Lowpass Filter and LFO
- MIDI Learn knobs
- Written entirely in Swift 4 & AudioKit 4

I will take a lot at this when the source code comes available.

Busch.

Yes, but as I understand it the ROM Player (built on AudioKit) takes this to higher level. So one wouldn't need to get into the nitty gritty of AudioKit programming. At least that's how I'm seeing it.

"AudioKit released today ROM Player, a completely free and full-featured professional sample playback instrument example based on Swift 4 and AudioKit 4. This code can be modified to play EXS24, Wave or Sound Fonts and is very lightweight. This new code demonstrate nicely how you can make a beautiful sounding, pro-level instrument with a small amount of code. It has all kinds of included pre-build filters, effects, and other audio signal processing classes to get you started and help you build the music apps of your dreams. You can even replace the included sounds and graphics with own creations and upload to the app store. Record your Grandma’s piano, a neighbour’s cat, or even your cousin’s Tuba, and use the code to make an iOS instrument out of it."

Sure you can get ROM Player, or FM Player, or Synth One whatever apps they're offering for free on the website.

Matt Fecher has promised release of the FM Player source code "soon".

I got AudioKit a couple of years ago. Back then it was kind of a modular synth builder iPad app. It appears to have come a long way since.

It seems silly to nitpick a free app, and while it does sound good (relative to FM synthesis, yes I know this app is samples), there are weird latency artifacts particularly when playing chords, as though the programming can only handle one midi event at a time resulting with something similar to a very fast strum effect when attempting to play more than one note at a time.

Is this inherent to the AudioKit 4 platform?

edit: Ah-HA! The latency goes away when the app runs in the background and the graphics don't utilize any CPU. Kind of clunky though to have to bring it back up to change a sound or modify some settings then send it to the background again to play.

And more nitpicks, many of the samples are a bit noisy and the envelopes end rather abruptly with long sustain on the DX E Piano 1.

Might want to contact the dev. Matt Fecher is currently active on the iPad Musician FB group. I bet he will respond to your concerns quickly.
