Effective immediately, the forum will be mandating that any thread that has ANYTHING to do with keyboards, keyboard technology, or music in general must be labelled with an "OT:" prefix.

This will allow the many forum users utilizing this space for discussions about planes, trains, automobiles, Sci Fi series, their most recent cable bill, the odd-looking mole on their hip, or whatever other random fucking thought pops into their heads that they must share with the community will not be sidetracked by anything related to music.

We thank you all for your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,
Decidedly NOT The Management

Can't help you here I actually just played a 4 hour Bar Mitzvah gig this AM and now need to write a setlist for a corporate vocal jazz quartet hit tomorrow night AND learn a bunch of tunes for a funk band with whom I just got a gig that's playing LATER tomorrow. I'm procrastinating right now TBH.

I have been trying to buy keyboards from 2004 but its impossible,

Nobody cares for photos of my 2013 BP
and I don't need marital advice, or girl friend advice or both at the same time.

And how do you expect me to make a parody of a parody ?

This is a big challenge , I will have to consult the experts on FB
smile

Hey, curb your abuse eh? Sven's just being a good Canadian, channeling the "peace, order and good government" clause at the heart of our constitution and weaving it into a shield to protect us all from getting wasted on too much "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

There's a forum I post at—that's dedicated to virtual instruments—named VI Control. Over there, "OT" refers to Orchestral Tools, a top-notch producer of orchestral libraries.

Their use of the term "OT' threw me a bit at first, but I'm used to it now; so for me anyway, Sven is correct: OT is no longer OT.

Best,

Geoff

The opening credits to The Holy Grail are among my favorite of all time. As a teen, I first saw that in the theater during it's first run and had no inkling it was coming.
It was the beginning of a lifetime love affair. Python

Holy Grail was my first exposure to Monty Python. As I was watching it, I was struck how bizarre it was. The ending shocked me so much that I had to take a holiday in Sweden.

If I have to ex-plane this again, you're going to be re-trained for your position. Any further infractions of Company Policy will lead to you losing your job, which will surely interfere your plans to be upwardly mobile. You will no longer be able to pay your monthly cable bill, which will lead to your missing the latest installment of your favorite Sci Fi series. You will also lose your insurance coverage, which will make it more difficult to pay your doctor to check the odd-looking mole on your hip.

Fucking, however, remains free.

At least for the time being.

But technically they don't know the change has occurred until after they read the post, but they have to read the title first. So at the time they read the title, it would be OT, but then after they read the post, it would cease to be OT.

puff

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Just sayin'... idk

Right on, dB! In 3rd grade we were required to memorize a poem and recite it for the class. I chose that one, and absolutely flabbergasted the class (& the teacher) by reciting it without a stumble. Many of my classmates had a new found respect for me, while a number of them were just very confused...

I was the weird kid reciting Bukowski.

then Mrs. Sorenson told us:
“now, what we are going to
do is we are going to tell
each other what we did
during the rainstorm!
we’ll begin in the front row
and go right around!
now, Michael, you’re first!. . .”
well, we all began to tell
our stories, Michael began
and it went on and on,
and soon we realized that
we were all lying, not
exactly lying but mostly
lying and some of the boys
began to snicker and some
of the girls began to give
them dirty looks and
Mrs.Sorenson said,
“all right! I demand a
modicum of silence
here!
I am interested in what
you did
during the rainstorm
even if you
aren’t!”
so we had to tell our
stories and they were
stories.
one girl said that
when the rainbow first
came
she saw God’s face
at the end of it.
only she didn’t say which end.
one boy said he stuck
his fishing pole
out the window
and caught a little
fish
and fed it to his
cat.
almost everybody told
a lie.
the truth was just
too awful and
embarassing to tell.
then the bell rang
and recess was
over.
“thank you,” said Mrs.
Sorenson, “that was very
nice.
and tomorrow the grounds
will be dry
and we will put them
to use
again.”
most of the boys
cheered
and the little girls
sat very straight and
still,
looking so pretty and
clean and
alert,
their hair beautiful in a sunshine that
the world might never see
again.

Saw it in Abington, right up Broad Street fro Center City, of course. grin

Like I said - instant bond with the Pythons. Their existence/body of work let me know that I wasn't alone. George Carlin helped a lot with that as well.

I saw it with a couple of bandmates in a city we played in. I remember the short feature before Holy Grail was "Norway, Home Of Giants" and it was hugely funny although many folks just thought it was a travelogue, went to buy popcorn and missed it.

What -- wait -- you mean this forum isn't about ASCII, QWERTY, and Dvorak? No wonder I was confused.

On the OP's OT (original topic), I'm actually ambivalent. The mix of OT (Off-topic) and OT (On-) posts does tend to humanize the participants, adding to the feeling of community that might be lacking if we always stayed OT (On-topic).

I find the ongoing honesty of the group refreshing, even if by this point, we've seen pretty much everything but jpgs of someone's colonoscopy. roll

The grace-note OT material is amusing. It'd be boring if all we talked about was digital arrays and the oxygen content of high-end cables. snax

Internet forums are like cable TV channels:

When they start out, they have a specific focus.

But the longer they're around, the more they begin to resemble each other in their content!

Some illustrative topics, seemingly found on over 50% of forums, include such things as

- What are you reading right now?
- What are you watching right now?
- What are you listening to right now?
- What's the last movie you saw?
- What's your favorite recipe?
- Which forum is this again? I forget.

I'll take any of those questions over "Which 'keyboard amp' should I get?"

My theory (which (for you MP fans) is mine) is that "OT'ing" can't be effectively regulated but is effectively self-regulating. A certain amount of it is bound to occur, and is healthy. When there gets to be too much, the more content-valuable members of the community will tend to drift away, which tends to invalidate the OT'ing, thus leading to self-correction.

I'll give an opposing view.

This is a community. No community is strictly content-based. If it were, none of us would even need screen names here, because the only relevant factor would be the words we type about keyboards.

Communities work because there is a certain level of bonding over aspects beyond the content.

I do find some of the OTs vacuous, like someone just really wanted to start a thread that day. But that's why it's marked OT. And nothing is stopping anyone from continuing to post in the O(n)Topic threads that day, or starting one of their own.

Plus, half the time, what the poster thought was OT was pretty relevant after all.

I'm for 'em.

Even for the OT stuff, we never descend into the vile insulting language many other forums are subject to.

That's part of what makes this place great.

. . . and now for something completely different.

I'm a great admirer of John Cleese. Conan O'Brien once asked him why he was touring again in his 70s. John said "Why? Bloody alimony payments, that's bloody well why!" A deliciously surly bon vivant.

Rick Wakeman had a 2nd career as a comedian to pay for his alimony obligations so that may not be far from the truth.

Well it doesn't have to be a name. It can just be a random string of characters... which you can change at anytime. Heck your whole post can be a random string of characters, as Theo has proven time and time again.

I also think this forum could use some opinions from the "outside" world, so maybe we should ask the man in the street what he thinks...

How dare you? Those are not random characters. They're not even in random order. 'kin guy.. jeez.

When OT is only Semi-OT:

Musicians have similar OT things, especially keyboard players. Examples -
1) we all have to deal with gigging as it applies to our personal lives. It could be hot chicks at gigs or just the weird hours involved. You don't worry about that when you're an accountant. So we have that in common, even though it's OT.
2) gear. Of course if your hobby is golf or boating you can have a conversation about disposable income and hobbies. But when you're a musician, the conversation is a bit different...especially if it contributes income.
3) Most of us tend to be a bit more technical than our other counterparts -many engineers, IT folks, etc. So we end up having OT topics that apply to many of us. Those are different than topics that other forums would find of interest.

Chevy Chase is a damn fine musician. Pretty good voice, too, as he displayed in 'Three Amigos' (which is appreciated more each year as one of the all-time great comedies).

El Guapo: "Would you like to see your friend (Martin Short) die?"
Chase: "I've seen it"
