He is still alive... Lots of confusion.

Read his last interview in Rolling Stone where the writer was describing his chain smoking.

Always loved TP's music. Wildflowers, Great Wide Open, etc. And Benmont Tench's Hammond playing is always amazing.

Saw him a few times here in LA, but skipped his shows at the Bowl last weekend. This is so sad.

Today SUCKED!

From the LA Times:

Quote:
Petty's manager Tony Dimitriades announced the news this evening with this statement:

"On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends."

RIP Tom Petty. frown

Best,

Geoff

Really bummed that Petty passed today.

Found myself with a need to watch Running Down a Dream again. What a great movie. Also, very humbling to realize that Tench played so many of those iconic organ parts with his LEFT HAND. What a band that was.

Totally agree, the film Running Down A Dream is amazing.

Very sad to hear this. I think about his music all the time.

I watched the documentary again last night; about halfway through, I saw the official announcement of his passing.

Rest in peace, Tom.

I saw the official statement early this morning. Was very bummed yesterday, after hearing the news of his cardiac arrest and hospitalization; and that on top of the horrendous news out of 'Vegas. It was an upsetting day, to say the least.

RIP, Tom Petty. Thanks for all of the great songs and inspiration..

When I heard he had passed away, I cried. Then I read this quote: "Don't cry because its over, smile because it happened." and I thought, Tom brought a lot of good moments and joy to us. R.I.P.

I listen to a lot of Tom Petty and have always loved him. My daughter is 12 and when I picked her up from School yesterday, I gave her the news. At first, I think she kind of recognized the name but didn't put 2 and 2 together. So I plugged my iPhone into the car USB port, picked artist:Tom Petty, and started going through the songs. She knew EVERY SINGLE ONE and was singing along and was like "OMG!" So to me, I think it says something that even though I had to make the connection for her, my 12 yr old loved his songs as much as this 46 yr old.

My favorite Tom Petty song was always his first(?) hit 'I Need To Know', which was kinda punk-lite, like the Pretenders. That whole album was a lot of fun. RIP Tom.

We're down to two Wilburys. Is Dylan going to outlast them all?

I remember installing a cassette player in a friend's truck around 1979 and the cassette we were using to test it out was Petty's "Damn the Torpedoes" and just cranking that thing up - speakers not installed, just sitting on the seats, wired up...
38 years later he still rocks my soul. RIP, Tom; thanks for the great music.

I run a weeknight karaoke show. Good crowd last night. I don't often sing in the show anymore (if you do this all the time you'd understand) but did sing "Refugee" last night - and was surprised when a few came up afterwards and asked me who did the song.

It's a young room.

Some of the guys did a group sing of "Free Fallin" though, so all hope is not lost. The song was written before most of them were born. It's currently the #1 download on iTunes - and was his biggest single at the time of it's release. It was also on his biggest selling album - the 5x platinum non-Heartbreakers Full Moon Fever. So that might help explain it.

FWIW "Mary Jane's Last Dance" is a karaoke staple, is currently #4 on iTunes, and was sung last night too - as well "Stop Draggin My Heart Around" (one of the more popular karaoke duets).

No matter what their age, everyone in the room recognized that we had lost another rock icon.

RIP Tom you will be missed by all generations.

Another superhero passes.

How come they don't make movies about MY superheroes? Just sayin' he's one of the people who brought original game. And the keys did not suck. Totally loved his career.

Ain't no bar band that won't mourn his passing.

I hate to say it, I'm getting more acclimated to all of this. People dying randomly.
It's a thing, I believe. I hope to avoid it for as long as possible. If I'm still playing in my 70s, I win!

Helluva legacy that he's left. Now it's up to us to pick up the torch, eh? I'm all there!!

It is what it is.

Life is too short to be playing bad music.

Tom Petty Died From Accidental Drug Overdose Involving Opioids, Coroner Says

In a statement posted to Mr. Petty’s Facebook page on Friday, his wife, Dana, and daughter, Adria, wrote that Mr. Petty suffered from “many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and most significantly a fractured hip,” but that he continued to tour, worsening his conditions. “On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication,” the statement said.

Funny (is that the right word?) that they list Citalopram as a pain med. It's nothing of the kind -- it's an antidepressant.

Yeah strange support group for this poor soul. It's very hard to intervene and many do not either enough or know how to intervene. I would think that the doctors were responsible for this. There is this current thing with knowing about prescription drug interactions and then something like this happens. It's almost like the Michael Jackson thing...

You have to be able to recognize when someone you know and love is int trouble and do something about it, hard but necessary.

I don't know if this counts as a movie about Petty, but the "Classic Albums" episode about the making of the album "Damn the Torpedos" is the best episode from that series I have ever seen. Petty and Campbell in particular go into considerable detail on how the individual songs were initially conceived and built up. It's an outstanding documentary - about a wonderful album.

This is one of those situations where 2+2=5.

My girlfriend is a psychiatrist who takes care of oncology and chronic pain patients. It’s amazing how many people have never been told by their doctor that these drugs are dangerous, especially together. Since the FDA issued its warning, she started having “the talk” where they have to choose between the opiates they get from their other doctors and the benzos that she had been prescribing.
