Sad. Sadly being a lifetime smoker is not a good thing.

I admire Tom a lot. What a prodigious song writer. I hope the reports about brain activity are wrong.

My day just got worse.

TP & HB's music (among a few others) was the reason I got into playing keys.

This sucks.

This is a tough one. Many memories. That first TP album is special.

First time I heard Breakdown on WLIR - it was an epiphany. "Who are these guys," I thought. Then I bought the album. Fun lyrics and concise songs. A real harbinger of things to come.

RIP

One of those guys, like Dylan, who wrote better than he sang. I love Learning to Fly, The Last DJ, Into The Great Wide Open, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. Check out the story when he's working with Jeff Lynne, who says "Freefallin' is the title - sing it"
- "Well I'm free....ee....ee... (dammit I gotta repeat the word) free fallin'..."

RIP Tom.

Cheers, Mike.

I'm thankful for him living (what seemed to be) a good life and giving us great music.

The great thing about music is that there's always something to learn. The frustrating thing about music is that there's always something to learn!

Steve, that was my reaction as well. I wore out that first record.

RIP TP

Hopefully he's having a jam session with Roy and George now.

Radio in NY/NJ is saying death announcement may be premature. He may still be breathing after being revived.

One of the first artists I "found" and followed on my own. Was just gushing about Petty's career to someone this week.

Man.

RIP.

Hmmm....indeed, the sites are saying he was pulled off life support, but hasn't passed. I know it's inevitable, but it feels particularly distasteful to talk about him as if he already died...

I played in a Petty tribute for about 4 years. This hardly makes me unique among musicians, but it does mean these songs flow through my veins and always will.

I hate to sound unsentimental once again, but the life expectancy of someone who partied like TP is probably about 70 and that's if they're lucky. Tom wasn't. It's sad though because he was still making great music.

earlier reports were that he had passed, hence the confusion

that was then and this is now
