I'm sure the same could be said for Dylan (i.e. some people just didn't like his singing) LOL! I don't know how to describe it? I guess you could call it some kind of a nasally drawl. And then throw in the concept that while you're singing, it sounds more like you're talking. Some singers just sound similar, and I don't think Petty or Knopfler were trying to be copycats. I remember when I first heard Terry Stafford singing Suspicion. I thought, is that Elvis?

cool

HA! Terry Stafford is another guy that won me a "freebie".

But a LUNCH in his case......

At the engine plant I was working in the workers were allowed to have radios at their work station. One guy(his name was Larry too, but don't take this personal wink ) had his radio on the "oldies" station and Stafford's "Suspicion" came on. A lady on the line asked him if it was Elvis and Larry nodded his head "yes". And I spoke up saying it wasn't. Well, a discussion ensued, and the crux is that he was so adamant that it WAS Elvis and my insisting it was instead Terry Stafford spurred his over confidence to bet a lunch on it. So then we had a third, objective party make a call to the radio station.

I gotta tell ya.....NOTHING tastes better than a free lunch! grin

And I did say I always thought Tom sounding "Dylan-like" wasn't on purpose. And probably more guys sound like Dylan naturally than not, so the odds were with him. And probably too, because he too, had that "Dylan vibe", Knopfler would have also been a good fit with The Wilbury's. wink

Yes, you made your point that Tom sounding Dylan-like wasn't on purpose, as did I. +1 Knopfler would have fit right in with the Wilburys and his guitar work would have put them even more over the top (if that's possible!)... cool

I guess that would depend on what you mean by "over the top". wink

Thanks. Since "over the top" can mean many things in connection with performing arts, I just wanted some clarification. wink
