grin
Always loved that tale of why he named his guitar "Lucille". The version I first heard he said once that place caught fire, he beat it out of there with everyone else, but once outside, he realized he left his guitar behind. So he ran back in, got it and got back out the door just a second or two before the whole place collapsed. And since the brawl that set the place on fire was started over a girl named Lucille, he said, "So I named my guitar "Lucille" to remind me to NEVER do anything like that again!" grin

But his talk in that clip clearly explains why most of us HERE play our axes, don't it? At least, I hope so. wink

8th single, from 1954
From the title to the intro
to the piano (catch those swirling, descending lines during the 2nd verse)
to the horn chart
to the vocal (catch the way he says "years" ending the 1st verse)
to the fills
to the solo (dig BBK's interaction w/the horns)
to the jazzerific drummer (his shifts during the gtr solo are not the work of yer usual bluesband cat)
all the way to the end (the voczl twist during "all on account of you" is whistle
simply one of the best !

Opening the cap on 1955 BBK hit a new standard of "smoothossity"&, apparently studio production quality.
Note the ambience surrounding his vox, as well as the bg vox surrounding him, & the big band lazy swing of the horn arr.

Next up we have more of BBK's sleek jazz-blues stylings w/1955's cover of this by then blues standard, which eventually became an iconic signature tune for Mr King.
That's called puttin' yer stamp on it !

The Blues Boy of Beale continues his exploration of that jazzier horn-band swing thing.
V effective arrangement &, as previously, great comping by pno & drums.
Dig how BBK responds to the pno during the intro (my fave part of the track, BTW) ?
Note, too, the depth of the vocal recording, catching his vox as it falls away [at :55 ; 1:25 & 1:43] & the powerful, cutting gtr tone.

Gotta love the triumphant whoop he lets out at the end.
As he advises just before the solo, "Look out !"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBR7TO_CjXw

For comparison, here's a version from a decade later full of what expresses, both in the funkified feel & BBK's vox, wherein he really swings w/the band, which, while a bit long, also features some cool kboard & drum work.

BTW that's Hugh McCracken doing the 2nd gtr &if y' can stick with it til then they actually get into a nice dialog abt 14:30.
Then in his best way, BB gets the final word as the track falls apart.

BBK's 2nd single of 1956, while it became one of his most staple tunes, seems a steep back from the previous more sophisticated efforts. It's still got the horns, etc, but here they're more greezy than than smooth & neither the pno nor dr work has much flair.
He's still laying in some great vox, though---chk the way he sings "sweet" in the 1st verse (O:26) & "believe" in the 1st 2 lines of the 2nd verse (0:58 & 0:112).
The solo (1:32~2:14) has a really stark tone but is mostly distinguished by the upward chord swoop (a nod to the horn line ?) he throws in @ 1:52.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9BTPLKXqaY

Hard to believe it led to things like this later perf form 1983, wherein he plays 3 burning choruses before he even starts the actual song!
There are so many hot parts of this I suggest you chk every second out but here're are some of my fave moments:
The 2nd chorus of the intro, just aft the MD cues the band to quiet, catch the sync between the dr &BB at 1:26~1:29;
Singing the 1st verse he seems to actually kiss the mic (1:57) love ;
at 4:58 of the ending solo he plays 2 quick upward licks followed by a downward cadenza that leads perfectly into a drum-roll.
What...A...Band !!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d43jj3F6quo

Finally, if you study that perf, try this: dial back to the in-progress-start of the clip & hit the YT timeline's back button a few times as it plays to create a hip stuttering lick ! thu

That attitude is what makes it pointless to deal w/you.
The point of this thread is to create exposure for the music of BBK (yes, he's well known but most couldn't name more than a few of his recordings or what he played when) & to review the development of his craft.
