I had to find something to record with the new Hammond, right? grin

A chance to use the Mellotron and the recently cleaned up MiniMoog as well...and the new Forte even makes an appearance with an acoustic piano track. thu

Clonk

A rough mix, but I kinda dig it. John Ferraro on drums, Matt Bissonette on bass, and Mark McCrite on guitars and vox. I was going after more of the Seconds Out vibe than the Wind & Wuthering version, though.

Comments appreciated!

Now with better vocals!

Brother Steven Teller killin' it, yo. He took ideas from a few of the live versions and rolled 'em all into one.

You mean my SoundCloud link at the top, not the Youtube Genesis vid, yes?

Both work for me...what do you see?

Soundcloud link wouldn't load. I think Joe broke it earlier... working now. cool

Definitely has more of a Gabriel feel to it. Nice arrangement.

Excellent job as usual, Alan!

I'm still not done with mine. Upgrading the guitar track now, and I may try yet another vocalist.

Thanks. Perhaps a less "forward" voice? A little higher and softer maybe?

Perhaps...but I'm not necessarily trying to stick closer to what they did. I'm pulling away from it just a bit deliberately....hence touches like the little bells and piano at the end. The closer the sound of the lead vocal is to Phil, the more likely one will be drawn to compare, I figure.

If you've heard my In The Cage or Light Dies Down On Broadway, same sort of thing there (especially the latter). The guy who sang Cage is the next up to try Afterglow.

Interesting exercise to try and capture the Seconds Out vibe in a studio form though...the slow energy build on the outro has been the biggest challenge so far. I almost wanna hear a melodic synth or guitar solo towards the very there. I know...sacrilege... grin

I think there's a subtle phaser on the organ sounds. Very characteristic, whatever it is. I remember being lost in this stuff back in the day. Maybe I'll get back into it like dB is doing with modern tools.

This was back when music would take you to another planet.

I was just thinking the same thing a few days ago when I heard an old song with a phaser.

You are correct!

There are three organ tracks, actually - the Leslie is mic'd in stereo and panned hard L/R, and the A100's speakers are mic'd in mono with the phaser added afterwards.

Exactly.

SOOO much fun taking this stuff apart and trying to put it back together again; and, as mentioned above, sometimes things take unexpected turns during the creative process... cool

Whole different level of performance than playing live, too. There are guys I work with who are unreal live...but put headphones on them and point a mic at them in the studio, and they just totally freeze...

I can't encourage the brethren enough to get into the recording thing. Man, it's a good time. Arguably better use of time than watching the average TV show, to be sure. smile

It's really not that unusual. Live, you play it and its gone. In the studio, one can become hyper-aware that every nuance is being captured for posterity. Coupled with the option of do-overs, that can be a bit paralyzing...

...and then, you can get lost in repeated tries for a good performance vs. trying to cobble together multiple takes. The latter can actually be lots of fun, tbh - there's times when parts recorded with the intention of going one place in a tune that end up somewhere else entirely. grin

We play the same in the studio as live - can't do Genesis any other way.
We did this live at a gig for our DVD and I am bowled over with how it turned out:

I'm sure. I actually used to play in a band years ago that did a bunch of Genesis stuff (mostly Selling England and Trick Of The Tail tracks), along with Yes and Jeff Beck tunes (had to compromise with the guitar player). Loved it to bits. Nothing close to what you guys are doing though...

I go a bit farther - there's stuff on Mama and Abacab that I like...but yeah, that's a different band at that point.

That being said, Home By the Sea and Second Home By The Sea kick serious ass. They're KILLER live, too.

If you don't mind, I went looking and found both new ones and expensive vintage ones. So that tells me the original is A Thing.
