Highlights include iPhone X's OLED edge-to-edge display that eliminates the Home button and performs a 3D scan of the user's face, the iPhone 8's glass body and a faster chip, 4K resolution for the Apple TV, and cellular capabilities for the Apple Watch Series 3. More here:

Apple Event: iPhone X, With Edge-to-Edge Display, to Cost $999

iPhone X looks nice but you gotta wonder why launch in tandem with the iPhone 8 and 8 plus??? I know the X is an anniversary thing but the new iPhone 8 looks positively ancient compared to the iPhone X. Plus is the next iPhone going to be called iPhone 9 and then 11? Nice products but the way they have multiple overlapping versions of many products makes it confusing.

Couldnt agreee more, seems like they are back in the power pc lineup problem again.

Iphone 10 looks like a samsung that uses xbox technology to recognize faces with gigantic opportunities for live emojis, I rest my case........interesing that my son always tells me that everything apple releases that seems cool and fresh always exist in the android world.

Let's say you are skiing in Aspen and you want to unlock your phone. Do you have to take off your helmet, goggles, and face mask to do it?

Damn, Apple can be so stupid....

I watched a replay of the iPhone announcement segment. It was actually funny hearing the applause during some of the new feature releases. But nothing dramatically new was announced. I guess they have "applause lights" to cue the audience. laugh

Just like the current fingerprint authentication you don't have to use face recognition authentication and can still type in a password like you can now (either/or) ...

I agree though that there wasn't anything earth-shattering in the new hardware announcements from what I could see ... here's hoping the new IOS 11 will bring more features worth using ...

I think the funniest, or saddest part was them using the Gretzky quote about skating to where the puck will be, then announcing features that other phone companies introduced years ago.

Right now I am the only person in my IT department that still has an iPhone. They all have Samsung Galaxies. I plan to get one tomorrow. It will have wireless charging, dual cameras and all the other features announced by Apple, plus VR glasses and a watch that works like an independent phone.

Actors in movies and theater might find the face recogniton feature useless as well.

Recognition is supposed to work in the dark. I notice the Galaxy S8+ already has face and eye recognition.

The crucial factor—as I understand it—is that the facial recognition be 3D. Otherwise, you can fool it with a picture of the user.

Best,

I really love our 3rd-gen Apple TV's and hate how Apple has raised the price of admission from $79 to $179. And then they wonder why sales declined.
The new remote with the touch pad is a worse user experience IMO.

I want stuff like Apple Music on my TV, but I don't think that justifies the insane price increase.

iOS devices are relatively good value; Macs and Apple TV not so much.

Apple has actually leveled off a LOT. They are not achieving anywhere near the financial growth they were enjoying 5 years ago.

I find it funny that all new phone companies push their camera updates. I personally can't take photos looking at a 5" screen in daylight. I need to stick my eye in a range finder and frame a picture. Also large pixel pics take up lots of memory, oh yeah you buy space on their iCloud. Just give me an adequate camera and shave off $X00.

With the X retailing here for $1,829, that's $US1,470, Apple are pushing the iphone into the luxury goods category. You can get a mid spec MBP Air for that.

Given a new entry level Android phone can be had for $99 the additional $US900 or $AUD1,729 is a huge premium for a device that does the same things, just a little better.

Interesting fact quoted here today, Apple globally has 20% of the smartphone market and accounts for 80% of total smartphone profits.

How long will it last? I hope forever, as I do not use an iPhone and am grateful that Apple has plenty of funds washing around to fund the ongoing development of MainStage and Logic.

Apple has a good grasp of where things are going and how to run a business. Obviously one might not be impressed if happy with current tech and how it functions. One must imagine 5, 10 years out. The watch not needing the phone for Wi-Fi/LTE is a big deal. As tech continues to miniaturize connective functionality could be a button on your shirt or pin on your collar. This is scifi imagined tech being brought to the masses and can only be done by a company with the resources of an Apple or Google. The Watch and tech like the watch will eventually outsell the phones.

While I recently bought a 50" 1080P TV for $200 - 4K TV's rule the high end now and are priced where 1080s used to be. The switch to a 4K Apple TV is obvious... But the real news is that Apple convinced those movie studios to offer their 4K content at the same price and upgrade purchased HD versions of movies to 4K versions without another purchase.

Apple is out in front on AR augmented reality. This and 3D facial recognition tech is now in place. Games will drive adoption and teach the base how to use and accept the tech... Apple's enormous developer community will imagine all the ways they can be used by end users. Apple has chosen to implement 3D facial recognition in a fashion respecting your privacy.

And at the same time Apple continues to sell phones, media, and services at an astounding pace with excellent profit margin allowing them to both invest in next paradigm R&D and leverage their platforms and vast user base to secure the deals they want, the developers they need, the manufacturing materials they require, etc. etc.

Just some thoughts. For us content creators the iMac Pro will arrive soon. 2018 will be the new Mac Pro where Apple has suggested they'll allow power users to upgrade and trick out the machines like in the "old days".

With a multicore Geekbench score of almost 10k, the A11 chip is about 25% faster than the (aging) Core-i7 desktop I use for most audio work. The days of really being able to use a phone to run virtual instruments is here.

Smart investors don't just look at the stock price, they look at the foundation of the company, trends, and where the price will be in the near future. Apple is skating to where the puck was 10 years ago. Telling people they are cool will only work in the short term. It is time to sale your stock.

I have a 6.

I don't understand why they released two phone models at the same time or called one X. If anything, it should be called an 8X. I went on the Apple page and did a comparison. They have all 3 phones side by side with the specs running down the page. There's only a few features the 10 has over the 8, the facial recognition stuff and full screen.
https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/

Now I'm comparing the 6 to the 8, they're almost the same phone.
Difference is the processor (A8 vs A11) and the camera. The phones are practically the same size.
6 = 5.44 x 2.64
8 = 5.45 x 2.65
8P = 6.24 x 3.07 (too big, won't fit in a pocket)
X = 5.65 x 2.79 (too big, won't fit in pocket)

I have a Lifeproof case on my 6 and it fits in my front pocket. With a case, I'm not sure the X would fit or it would stick out of the pocket.

Unless I want a better camera, or to pass my 6 down to a family member and move up, then I could continue to wait.

Pricing
8 = $699 (64gb) $849 (256gb)
X = $999 (64gb) $1,149 (256gb)

I use apple pay with Panera Bread and it works. That's the only place I use it so far, and most of the time I unlock the phone by typing in my 4 digit pin because I'm used to doing it. So this facial recognition sounds great, but it's not something to make me upgrade. I also don't shoot portraits or selfies with my camera, what I have now works, but I would like the better camera of the 8.

Price doesn't matter if I can run my rig from a watch.

A11 doesn't surpass my i7 4790k CPUs....
If it did I'd get VEPro and run 4 iPhones in an Orchestral shoebox.

Back in the 90s I used shoebox sized 1GB HDDs for my Samplers.
Now I can run entire rigs.....nice.

I've been really critical of Apple lately. Just so people don't get the idea that I'm an anti-Apple anti-fanboy just stirring things up. ... I have two MacBookPro's, a MacBook Air, 2 Mac Mini's, iPhone, iWatch, and several iPads. I was fully vested in Apple, but the danger signs appeared when top management decided it was a good idea to get rid of the Save As commands and force people to use Time Machine. When I wanted to upgrade my MacBookPro, there were no options to get one with a 2TB SSD and 32 GB memory. I ended up getting a Windows notebook with 64 GB memory and 2 x 2TB SSD drives for the same price as a MacBookPro with 16GB memory and 1TB drive. Then came the new iPhone with the amazing feature, no headphone jack. I'm sorry, but bluetooth audio is only acceptable for audiobooks and I don't want to carry around a dongle so I can use my good headphones.

So now I'm mad at Apple. I feel that Apple has abandoned the creative crowd that was their customer base for blind followers who believe any marketing hype they put out.
