There is still a slim hope that this is inaccurate but, it`s looking less and less so:

Sorry, brother, it's true. Confirmation on his website . . .

I've been listening to and enjoying his music since I still lived in NYC, and that was more than 40 years ago, a lifetime, by any standard. Got to see Steely Dan a few Summers back, and they were still amazing. My deepest respects . . .

noooooooooooooooooooo :'(

I was at night 1 of their 1993 comeback tour, and got to see them 5 more times after that. Truly great nights one and all, especially that 3rd time in 1996. They were doing 2-3 new songs at each show. One of the ones they did that night was a masterpiece that they never ended up releasing called "The West Side Of The Story."

Rest in peace, Walter. Your music is immortal.

Outside of the Beatles, maybe add Pink Floyd, probably no band has brought as much thoroughly enjoyable music to my ears as Steely Dan. They're still in heavy rotation on my iPod. All you ever need to know about rock record production can be gleaned from listening to those first 4 or 5 Steely Dan albums.
RIP Walter, reelin' in the years.

Just read this in another forum. It sucks for sure.

I remember seeing Steely Dan on "Bandstand" early on in their tenure, when it was still more than just Walter and Donald, and Clark asked Walter why he chose the bass as his instrument. His answer? "Because it's the easiest to play." wink Then Clark asked him how much musical experience he had before picking up the bass and he said, "Virtually none." grin

We knew he was puttin' Dick on, and we cracked up( was watching with a few friends).

Just heard "Kid Charlemagne" on the car radio yesterday and the DJ afterward said nothing about it. That's why it surprised me today. frown

@ Fang, I don't see how the DJ would have known to say anything about it yesterday...

So young, at only 67!

I haven't checked for other obits yet, but the one at HuffPost linked above, along with some of the tweets below it from people like Nile Rodgers, seem to really summarize the man's impact.

Hate to double-post in the forums here, but Becker had an impact on all musicians, and not everyone reads all three forums (keyboard, bass, guitar).

Steely Dan is one of the best bands ever and Walter was a huge part of it. Another great one gone.

The geniuses that provided the soundtracks of our lives are going away. But the music lives forever. We should all wish to be so fortunate to leave such a legacy.

I was very lucky to see them on the `Two Against Nature` tour in Tokyo. One of the highlights was seeing how John Harrington handled `Kid Charlemagne`-I knew beforehand that he doesn`t copy Larry Carlton`s solo. He was very melodic and very original too-awesome show overall. Mr. Becker also more than held his own, loved his phrasing and tastefulness.

RIP - I agree that Steely Dan at their best were brilliant and highly creative.
Total perfectionists in the recording studio. I heard that for the solo to "Peg" they imported several guitarists before setting on one solo for the record.
Walter was a talented guitarist in his own right, of course, in addition to his other abilities.

That was none other than Jay Graydon who came up with and played the lead solos on "Peg"- a former active Member of this very Forum in 'the old days'.

I was bummed. I got to see them last year at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Great show, but we were all concerned about Walter's appearance though his wit was in fine shape.

He will be missed.

Elizabeth ("Caev's Grrrl") and I caught 'em the Summer before last, in a venue close enough to their old scho- ehr, stompin' grounds- that there were likely family and old friends of Becker's and Fagen's in attendance; Mr. Becker seemed quite enthusiastic and was clearly enjoying himself. It made the night a wonderful thing...

Yeah. Hope you enjoyed it.

The only time I had a chance to see them was early on sometime between the first and second LP. Came down with the flu and wound up giving my ticket to a buddy as a belated birthday gift. Told me it was one hell of a show.

Still gotta read the posts but gotta say that SDan was the most forethinking band lyrically at their time , other than Little Feat.
While Becker may've been more their lyrical edge, that may've been more a Len-McC thang.
Plus the cat was their actual bassist !!!!

[FWIW & BTW, that's still not been noted by the Low Down Forum freak rolleyes hitt taz idk

Yer right of course & I didn't mean to define him narrowly.
I just thought it odd they'd not mentioned it at the LDown.
Maybe they're less obit page oriented.
