Been enjoying the presets. I like the keyboard feel. It's good because I have my Yamaha PSR e443 under it for arranger duty, so I can use it for soloing and additional sounds (it has split and layer, which means with editing I can create a good synth tone.

Nice little keyboard with some good sounds. I remember auditioning one at a local music store. Is this for home or live use?

It's a fun little controller too if you have a computer. Congress with Cubase AI and some downloadable virtual instruments. YC-B3 and Prologue. You'll need the Yamaha USB driver too.

If you're into iOS there's also,
FM Essential iOS synth app.

Home use. Eventually live when I get to forming a band. It seems like it would be hard to program without the Melas editor. I have the Yamaha FM Essentials app on my iPad, so it's good for that.

I was in L&M yesterday, and had a look at the MX 61. Quite a bit packed into that 10 pounds!

The Melas editor isn't the only game in town. See http://vycromx.com/ for a free MX editor, or the Pro version.

I also picked up an MX49 the other day at a deal I couldn't resist. I plan on having it sit on top of my S70/SK-1 rig to run fiddle lines, steel guitar lines and a few other solos. Haven't gigged with it yet, but so far it is a neat little board which I got new for less than $400. Now not sure how it will hold up doing 70-80 gigs a year. But we will see. As far as sounds, it does the job.

I was just looking into an MX49 to complement my Kronos 61 for a rock band (70s, 80s, 2000s). There are some excellent sounds in this little board but I'm torn between the MX and an FA-06. The FA is definitely more versatile, but also larger and more expensive...ugh.

Well look at it like this, the MX61 is half the price of the FA-06 and couldn't possibly have a worse action. wink

But yes, the FA is quite potent especially with continued firmware development.

One variable may be the particular sounds you might like to expand on... acoustic instruments? synthy sounds? For instance, I still like Yamaha's flute better than anything in the Kronos or Roland.

Though if it wasn't for your aversion to larger and more expensive, I might be inclined to pair the Kronos 61 to the FA-07 as opposed to the 06, so as to have a bigger-than-61 action from which to play piano (whether you used it to play the Roland's pianos or the Korg's).

Alternatively, you could consider a DS-61 (cheaper than the FA-06), on the basis that some of the big FA advantages (clonewheel, VA, synth) are well covered in the Kronos too. Though I think the basic sound sets of the FA and the DS are quite different, and I've never heard or played a DS, so take that suggestion with a grain of salt. ;-)

The combination of the 2.0 features and the 7x action persuaded me to put one on order, though I haven't yet quite figured out where it fits into my typical rig which has recently grown to three anyway... do I replace something, or do I actually go with four boards?? As for continued development, I'm not counting on anything beyond the 2.0, but who knows...

Hopefully a 2.1 as there is sure to be a bug. Although Roland is notorious for not updating firmware, so users I suppose should be thankful for 2.0.

That said, thanks for taking the plunge, Scott! Can't wait to hear your impressions of the 07.

And the MX49 is a third of the price of the FA-06.........!

The FA-06 can be had for $650-$800 on ebay so I'd probably go used.

So far I'm happy with my MX49 as a really lightweight way to bring along some extra sounds, especially when the Nord Stage 'only 2 sample based zones per program'' is a limitation and I'm too lazy to create my own sample set containing different sounds in one package. I bought mine used from a guy leaving town and in s hurry to sell all of his gear, for the equivalent of $315 US. Well worth it.

The only downside is that it's too small to fit on my Z stand without some sort of supporting shelf. Carrying along s shelf would negate the whole benefit of its feather weight.

Pickup a K&M 18880 stand with the 18881 stacker (2nd tier). It will hold both just fine, and since light weight is one of your goals, you'll knock off a whole lot of travel weight from your z stand.
