Country picker and mandolin master RICKY SCAGGS turns 63 today.

Not a big country listener here, but I have heard him pick, and can set that fretboard ablaze!

Also mention Motown great and former Detroit councilwoman MARTHA REEVES also turns 76 today too. smile

Dance in the street if you wish. wink

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RICKY SCAGGS! I'm not a big fan of blue grass, but I do give it a listen now and then. I love your take on it and your many Grammys prove you know what your doing!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MARTHA REEVES! No Where to Run, Heat Wave and Dancing in the Streets are some of my favorite Motown hits!

I always kind of laugh when I think about it.......

Ecorse, MI is located on the Detroit River. When I was a kid, they used to( and still do) have a fireworks display every 4th of July with the fireworks being launched off a barge docked at an "island" just a short way off the shore of a riverside park they've had there for years. It's now called "Dingell Park" after the U.S. Congressman who hailed from that city.

ONE year, the city closed off Jefferson Ave, between two major stems in the city, and let people fill the Ave. just to stand around and played records over a loudspeaker so the "kids" could dance and party. And actually, the FIRST time I ever HEARD the song "Dancing In The Streets" was at that 4th gathering when people WERE actually dancing in the street! grin

CARLOS SANTANA
Who turns 70 today. Him and the band with his name churned out some great tunes in their time and Carlos still goes at it. Seems to be just no stopping him.

I saw Santana live on their first national tour at the Arena in Philly, on a bill with The Youngbloods, Canned Heat, and Chicago. Santana came on next to last as Chicago had the bigger fame at the time. but Santana was absolutely outstanding that night, the rest were fair to mediocre.

Happy Birthday Carlos long may you live and play.....

Happy birthday to Santana one of my favorites too. He has been to Michigan or will be soon but I can't get to the show. I don;t know why so many shows are on week nights two or more hours drive from home instead of Saturday night when I would try to go. Passed on a George Benson recently same reason. Jim

And today(7/22/17) Eagles co-founder DON HENLEY turns 70.

Wikipedia lists him as a "soft rock" artist! shocked

THAT'S gotta surprise a lot of his fans!

Hard to believe, but as I mentioned before, I remember when they opened for YES once and there was a HUGE bunch yelling for them to "Get off the stage!"

Idiots. Heh! I'll bet over the years they snatched up all The Eagles stuff they could find and lied to their kids about how much they always LOVED them back in "the day" wink

I remember going to see Alabama and the warm up band was the Charlie Daniels band. I preferred Charlie's band. The same thing would have happened for me at a Yes concert with the Eagles as the warm up band. I would really enjoy the show a lot more without the idiots in the crowd though LOL! cool

@Larry:

The problem I've always had about going to concerts. There usually seemed to be a certain amount of idiots in attendance.

I've been lucky I guess at concerts. The warm up bands are sometimes better than the main liners! I think the fans at that Yes concert just want to hear their guys and would boo anyone that got up there back in those days. I have experienced idiot hecklers during stand up comedy, but that is to be expected and is sometimes funny as part of the show. The comedians are usually pretty sharp and putting the idiots in their place though LOL! Rude people at concerts need to get booted IMHO... crazy

Actually d, it didn't. I get my info from the "horoscope" column in the Detroit Free Press, which admittedly does lack in it's enirety of celeb birthday listings. But thanks for the mention of Clinton, who surely deserves a "happy birthday" wish from all who like good music.

What my being in "Dtown" has to do with anything is puzzling, since Clinton was born in N Carolina and came out of New Jersey.

But the column DID mention today being the 74th birthday of legend MICK JAGGER.

Who I hope DOES get some "Satisfaction" today, AND also gets everything that he wants. wink

Clinton did work (and without much success) as a staff songwriter and occasional music producer for Motown for a spell, but his "fame" really didn't come until a song he wrote for his group The Parliments, which he formed in New Jersey, "(I Wanna) Testify" made it big. And HE as the only actual member of that group ON the record, the rest not able to get to Detroit for the recording session. And his Parliment/Funkadelics group recorded under CASABLANCA records out of New York, and Clinton didn't find solo success until he moved over to CAPITOL records in '81 or so. Doesn't really matter though. He's a "Major music force" regardless of where from. wink

FWIW, most PF records thoughout their career were recorded in Detroit's United Sound Studios.
GC himself lives in a rural area NW of the city.

Also to Steve Morse one of my very favorite guitar players. (They are putting together a Dixie Dregs reunion), Those guys together were simply awesome musicians.

I grew up in chelsea (on a farm). Both grandfathers, my father, mother and brother and Uncle worked at Jiffy. Jeff lives about a mile from one of my houses and was in my brother and sister in laws class in school. Growing up I did not know him well and just recently learned he is into the music scene as well as the acting. Jim

AYRTON WILBURY is an alias of DHANI HARRISON.

So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DHANI HARRISON!

I was shocked at the resemblance in both sound and look when I saw him on some PBS tribute to George one night shortly after George's death.

Saw him on the Jersey Shore when he was with Junior Wells It was in a bar upstairs called the Rip Tide in the Schooners Wharf buildings. I sat 10 feet from them and was amazed all night long. Buddy played an ES335 that night. On one tune he shut the whole room full of semi drunk white folks (which I was one of) by turning the volume control down on the 335 and started picking single notes on it un amplified. The whole room went from loud to dead silent and then he eased up the volume little by little playing all by himself, then after a minute or so of that the band came in.

I became a big Buddy Guy admirer that night and still am

Happy Birthday Buddy, and many more happy and healthy ones as well.

OK, both Buddy's and Dhani's birthdays are past now, but I'll add another story I liked that concerned Buddy, but not really ABOUT him.....

It was back in '68, I believe this took place, and Jimi Hendrix was in Chicago to do a concert, and when showtime was getting close, nobody could FIND him anywhere!

A frantic search began and about an hour or so later he was found sitting in a downtown blues club watching and groovin' on Buddy! Nobody in the place had any idea who that oddly dressed cat WAS. wink

@ DBM and Fang, You're very lucky to have been in that club DBM! My daughter attended a Buddy Guy concert and brought home an autographed polka dot guitar strap for me. It's been about 10 years now and that strap has never been on a guitar! I think the world of Buddy and hope I get to go next time! cool

Well, so far it looks like you'll GET that chance. At his age, he doesn't show any signs of slowing down any time soon.

I know what you mean about the strap. Not having anybody's myself, one of my daughter's boyfriends back in the early '90's worked for a local music store that supplied some gear for a venue in Detroit(Chene Park Music Ampitheater) and copped an autograph of B.B. King for me when he was doing a show there and the kid was one of the equipment handlers. Still hangs up framed in my living room! wink

I agree buddy guy is a great talent that I only discovered about 3 or 4 years ago. I missed a chance to see him by a few minutes at his Chicago club a couple years ago. I was parked in a place that locked down at I think 10 PM (I did not know that until one of the club workers told me to get my car out or it would be there until morning. Buddy was coming in at about 10. I saw him arrive as I was leaving but decided I had to go back to the Hotel. I should of found another parking place but I had to get up early the next day for business meetings. Jim

He passed through my town and played at one of my favorite casinos and I missed him. His 2017 tour doesn't show him coming back any time soon (at least a few months). +1 the man is going strong with gigs just about every other night! Hope he'll be able to keep up the good work. I know I couldn't keep up with his tour schedule but will try and catch up with him one of these days! cool

If you're referring to PRINCE, his b'day was JUNE 7, and not JULY 7, which is RINGO'S b'day.

And I usually mention those b'days of those who are still with us(for some reason) wink

Fang, I think you should include RIP Birthdays too in some cases but that's entirely up to you. I know Elvis gets a massive amount of radio play on January 8th. Caevan always reminds us of Django's Birthday too...With regard to Prince, I guess it's better to get the day right though LOL! So,

HAPPY BELATED BRITHDAY TO PRINCE! I was never a fan of his music except for a song or two. One that I really liked was When Doves Cry. He was truly a guitar master and I really admired his playing as he could hold is own with the best IMHO! thu

Excuse my intrusion.
Yes, I guess I did get the date wrong.
Can only say I've been a bit, um, distracted this past month.
Thank goodness you were able to figure things out!

As I said last year, PRN was prolly the best combination of talent that we've ever seen: composer, singer, multi-instrument talented (still tryna find a clip of him & his fave concert trick of simultaneously playing RH kboard & LH gtr), arranger & producer.
More than 1/2 his finished tracks are only him.

Plus he tripped the light fantastic as a dancer in ways that went beyond his obvious influence from James Brown into an arty choreography that didn't just fill rhythmic space (as in most stage dance) but served as another interpretation of his tunes.
Beside the 1 above, look at this clip

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0KpfrJE4zw

Far as I'm concerned everyday's his BDay.
I'll trade y' 1 PRN for abt seventy-leven of yer random who's-in-the-paper-today picks.

[We now return you to yer regularly scheduled programming]

Y'know, my centering on b'days of the still living is one of convenience. Usually, and if the person is still active, their birthday might be announced somewhere. But looking up the birthdates of long gone and even some recently gone would take me more time on the ol' desktop than I'm both willing and able to take. But....

Just 'cause I STARTED this thread, don't take that as prohibiting. ANYBODY can contribute! wink So, if you happen to somehow know if it's Charlie Christian's b'day or something like that, feel free to come here and post it! smile

@ Fang, I was getting after you to start a Birthday Thread as opposed to starting new threads like the Ringo one and then mentioning several others on the thread that had nothing to do with the Ringo discussion. So, you gave it a shot and I think it's successful. You started the thread less than a month ago and have already had 1,374 views (Charlie was born on July 29th BTW). I think when we want to talk about Prince, Elvis, Ringo, [insert name] we can start a new thread on their birth or death or at anytime day. On this thread I'm glad to see you will allow a few RIP's to be included as you do a good job of keeping us informed on the live ones. Just my 2 cents again LOL! HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCY! cool

+1 Every now and then someone throws in a RIP or a Happy Birthday to someone we all know and love that may be OT musically, but it's still cool IMHO! I mean she was the greatest out of tune singer I ever heard and I loved Little Glow Worm on the sax LOL! thu

On we go......

Today, DAVID HOWELL EVANS, AKA THE EDGE, lead guitarist for U-2 turns 56 years old.

Probably not the "greatest" guitar player out there, but clearly far from the worst, his style and musical "personality" surely gave that band it's unmistakable sound. And although I'm not all that much of a fan, the group has done a few I like a lot and The Edge's playing on them certainly makes them worth listening to.

So...HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dave. Hope you get a NEW KNIT CAP! wink

Today, it's DAVID CROSBY'S 76th birthday. The walrus faced former Byrd and 1/3 of CS&N probably has some great stories to recall on this day. wink And although I like ALL the songs on CS&N's debut LP, "Guinnevere" and "Long Time Gone" are two he wrote that were great additions. I even wanted to name my 2nd daughter Guinnevere, but her Moher insisted on the more conventional( and mundane) Jennifer. Of course, I love her tons anyway wink

ELVIS COSTELLO is 63 today.

I'm kinda on the fence with this guy. Did some stuff I liked, other stuff I couldn't get into, so-so kind of performer.

Always interesting though. So I wish him a happy. wink

And today, BARRY GIBB, the remaining 1/3 of The Bee Gees is 71.

OK, admit it some of you...

There WAS a time you liked the Bee Gees, wasn't there? wink

I remember really liking their first U.S. release "New York Mining Disaster 1941" 50 years ago.

But, happy birthday Barry. I know you wish your brothers were still here to help celebrate.

And moving along...

ROGER WATERS is 74 today.

One of the founders of PINK FLOYD, I guess he's still doing some of their old stuff, but amid a lot of legal hassles with other remaining members. I don't really undersand the what. It's the WHY I understand less.

It's hard for me to deal with the fact the band goes back 50 YEARS. Guess I'm having "growing old" issues. wink

They've buried that hatchet. It involved Waters not wanting to work with the others & 'disbanding' the group. The others said "We're not disbanded. You left. We're Pink Floyd." Waters sued, claiming the name couldn't be used if he wasn't in the band. The issue was decided in court in favor of the 3 others, who went on to make 2 () post-Waters albums under the Pink Floyd name. They did one reunion concert for Live Aid with all 4 of them many years later, & Gilmour appeared in Waters' tour of The Wall. They've gone separate ways but have at least ended the feud.

Today(9/13) is the 65th birthday of Don Fagenson.

Better known to many as DON WAS, musician, producer and current(I think) president of Blue Note records.

Did pretty good for a Detroit boy.

Feel free D...some guys don't like the combined thread idea for BD's. For the most part all that's needed is a Happy Birthday one liner. I like it this way as we can elaborate at any time and/or start a special thread if we want to about the artist. They are going to have a repeat every 365 days and this way we don't tie up the forum with thousands of Happy Birthdays. I think we get more commentary on the RIP threads on artists we all love and hate to see go away...

The whole idea is to just wish certain people well on the day of their birth. Anyone can say if they like them as artists if they want. and if they don't, well, just don't post anything.

Posting their entire biogaphy and analysis of their complete discography isn't really necessary until an RIP thread sadly happens.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN today reaches 68 years. I never knew why he was ever called "the boss", as I never really took to using that name for him. But I did like enough of his stuff over the years to wish him a happy. Especially since I'm not that far behind him. smile

MICHAEL LEE ADAY, better known as MEAT LOAF turns 70 today.

Never much cared for the guy's musical efforts, but it isn't what this threads about. And given consideration to the LIFESTYLE this guy's led over the years, I'd say reaching 70 is quite an accomplishment. So, I'll wish him well today.

Happy birthday Meat Loaf. Saw a couple of his shows on tv not really a fan but he did seem to put out a lot of energy for the crowd.

Belated happy birthday for Springsteen. Like some of his songs just never follow his career. Jim

GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!

The "Killer" is 82 today!

Some probably are starting with jokes about that "whole Lotta Shakin' goin' On" being a palsy shake. But God bless 'im he made it this far when too many others much younger have sadly gone.

I never knew his b'day was the 29th. And so is my brother's. He'd have probably got a kick out of it as he WAS a fan of Jerry Lee's music. wink

And in a big switch of musical gears, TODAY Johnny Mathis is 82!

Always did kind of like a lot of his tunes as well. So, I guess I'll go the corny route and say...

Have a wonderful, wonderful birthday, Johnny! crazy

And today is singer/songwriter(and guitar player...happy?) DON McLEAN'S 72nd birthday.

Wowed us with '71's "mini-history" of rock'n'roll "American Pie".

Remember debating the song's referrences and meaning with everyone? wink

Did a lot of very good songs, but still my personal favorite of mine is his '72 release, "Dreidel". Love the vibe and particularily it's lyrics:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DON McCLEAN! The song I most admire by him is Vincent (better known as Starry Starry Night). His writing reminded me so much of Donovan's, that I thought Donovan wrote it for him LOL! A great historical account inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's painting... cool

Yeah, "Vincent" is a very good tune.

But my favorite song concerning Vincent Van Gogh is still Joni Mitchell's "Turbulent Indigo". wink

A lot of her stuff has that vibe. wink

And with that, I'll mention today, as we mourn Tom Petty, it's the 76th birthday of Chubby Checker( real name Ernest Evans) who it seems, got his stage name from Dick Clark's wife. Reported she asked his name, and he told her "Folks call me "Chubby". And as he reportedly just finished doing a Fats Domino imersonation, she picked up the "game" theme and asked, "Like in checkers?" And so was born the stage name "Chubby Checker".

Surprising to find out his big hit "The Twist" was recorded when he was just 19 and was still that age when it hit #1. And that he was a schoolmate of singer Fabian Forte, known mostly as "pop" idol FABIAN. Checker's stock in trade at the time was his ability to imitate popular singers of the day and made a living at it until covering Hank Ballard's "The Twist".

I kinda thought he was older and was surprised to learn he was "only" 76. So was my wife, to learn SHE is actually about a week older than him! shocked

Is there like a moratorium on gtr players here ?

This cat not only plays this way
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sQ7cuYgjzw

He plays this way
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYAoJ2QfKE0

He explains it this way
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBSWt0b4K8E

& he does much of it on a gtr he helped design
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOfS-u9oLQE

But back to twisting (in the wind) w/Chumpy Checker....

OK now.

So we have JOHN MELLENCAMP turning 66 today. Awwww.....

I still remember when he was JOHNNY COUGAR and my kid sister was so sweet on him! grin

He did OK though. Still had one of the lines I like in a song...."Life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone."

DARYL HALL today turns 71. The more vocal half of Hall&Oates, he, and them both, were laden with that dumb "Blue eyed soul" label.

Never a big fan myself, I only heard them do "Soul" . wink

And although I claim not being a "big" fan, I'll always love:

MANFRED MANN. Remember him?

Anyway...turns 77 today. Was YEARS before I discovered he was singing the word "Deuce" instead of "Douche" in "Blinded By The Light". grin

But that's because I never heard the Springsteen original until many a year later. wink

DY is cool but as was often the case Pete Anderson (master guitarist & producer) upstages him, before even starting the tune, in this clip.

DY does dance well, though !

And let's "give it up" for BILL WYMAN, founder and former bassist for The Rolling Stones who is 81 today!

He was the oldest and probably the more musically well rounded member of that band. Have a good 'un, Gramps! wink

Well, yer right abt that (along w/ the less stable Brian Jones).
He also produced records for several other acts.

What's most interesting in one way is that Bill Perks (real name) was many years older than the others but remains the youngest looking of any of them, even Ron Wood, a decade his junior.

YEOW!

Almost forgot to mention country guitar wizard BRAD PAISLEY's 45th birthday today!

But it's also my first daughter's birthday too, so you'll have to cut me some slack. Same date AND year. So they BOTH turn 45 today.

And Psycedelic Stooges co founder James Williamson's 68th.

Today, it's LYLE LOVETT who turns 60. Funny, but I always figured he was older. I never knew who he was until a big deal was made over him and Julia Roberts getting married. Then after hearing some of his stuff I figured he was OK as a musician and much more than just another country dude.

And so...

If we're also including those that have passed, I'll note that had he lived, IKE TURNER would be 86 today.

Beats ART GARFUNKEL by 10 years, who's 76 today.

It's also the 70th birthday of PETER NOONE, "Herman" of Herman's Hermits. Plus GRAM PARSONS reaches 71.

Also BRYAN ADAMS gets to 58, and RYAN ADAMS(no relation) hits 43.

THAT'S a lotta candles! wink

Happy birthday to a couple of people I've liked from first note I heard from them to now. smile

Gram Parsons died in 1973, so I'm pretty sure he didn't celebrate his 71st birthday.

Well, remember....

There was some agreement to include acknowledging the birthdays of those who have passed on too. Note too, that I also mentioned Ike Turner's birthday. smile

Larryz, I knew that Gram Parsons was dead from reading the Keith Richards autobiography Life. I knew that Gram Parsons died from a drug overdose, but what happened to him after he died is one of the most bizarre stories in rock/country/popular music.

@ Fang, you could have said he would have been 71 like you did with Ike...as opposed to he reaches 71, I didn't know he was deceased.

@ Sharkman, so what happened to him after he died? I'm not familiar with his story... OK, I think I found it...two of his buds stole his coffin and cremated his ashes at the Joshua Tree monument per his wishes... cool

EEeeewwww

That's weird. But life goes on....

Particularly for BONNIE RAITT, who's 68 today, and Joni Mitchell wannabe RICKIE LEE JONES, who hits 63. smile

Some might recall that Jones, in her debut on SNL, was looking like Joni from the cover of the "Hejira" LP. Beret and all. wink

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO RICKIE LEE JONES! thu

and a special HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BONNIE RAITT! She's still young at 68 and one of my favorite slide players. She's always great on stage and puts out some great music. Let's give them something to talk about! thu

I've also mentioned in "Forgotten guitarists" that today is the birthdays of...

JOHN HAMMOND--75

ROGER STEEN--68 (and was a TUBES co-founder)

TERRY REID--also 68 and followed by...

ALDO NOVA--just 61. And will mention that many don't and didn't know Nova IS a guitar player. Some just know him from that cheezy Mtv video from the '80's. wink

Keeping it going....

Today marks former "Tonight" show band leader and guitarist supreme KEVIN EUBANKS' 60th birthday. So I thought I'd find something to familiarize us more with his skill....

Have a good one today, Kevin! smile

Mentioned briefly in "forgotten guitarists", today is the 71st birthday of long time Jethro Tull guitarist MARTIN BARRE.

It's also birthday 51 for JEFF BUCKLEY, Tim's equally talented son. smile
