After watching the last two seasons with all of the drama and Kiki factor, it's all pro wrestling.

The drama is an LFO controlled by the league, and the athletes are obviously pawn players playing their role. You see it when the defense stands back at certain times and lets the offense have their "pro-wrestling throw me over the rope" moments.

I'm reallocating my sports viewing portfolio -- all of my future NBA time is going 33/33/33 to MLB, NHL and NCAA BB.

"We have something up our sleeve." I hope so. It will be interesting to see if Morey can make something pan out. The Rockets were really good this season, but they need more top-level talent, and they faded down the stretch. I hate to lose Pat Beverley, but he might need to go in order for them to have room for some other top players. What interests me is that they are looking at point guards like Paul and Lowrey. Will those guys be willing to work in a system where Harden is the ball handler? idk

As far as Dwight being traded by his "home team," sigh. He's a nice guy, but it seems he can't make himself fit or be wanted anywhere despite his talents.

Rockets reach agreement to trade for Chris Paul shocked

I'm not loving losing Pat Beverley, but we will see how it shakes out. I don't know how good CP3's D is.

Nah...if we ended up buying the team the organization would dissolve into a shambles as we fought with each other over who got to call the songs played during breaks. Unless, that is, whoever contributed the most got to call the shots. In that case put me down for six-fitty.... smile

Apparently he tried to buy the Rockets in 1994 for $81 million, losing out to Les by $4 million.

thats excellent advice . I think the Dubs might manage to lose a game or 2 just to keep it interesting. Otherwise, perfecting Hanon or new material is a good use of time smile

I was at a party Tuesday evening and the TV was tuned to the Rockets/Thunder game. Most people were pretty surprised that it was NBA time, though when I told them it was preseason they were like, "oh." Still, already? Not that I'm not excited by the Rockets this year, but either time has flown or the NBA is starting earlier.

In other news, No more East vs. West as NBA revamps All-Star Game format.

Man, it just keeps getting worse for Phoenix. I hope some of these draft picks make good. Even if they do, we're probably not looking at the Suns contending again until the 2020s. facepalm

I saw reports of that. The Clippers are really rebuilding I guess. Is Deandre getting traded or are they keeping that piece now that Blake is out?

Wow.

Last night, James Harden scored the first 60-point triple-double in NBA history, also breaking Calvin Murphy's single-game Rockets scoring record from 40 years ago.

The Cavaliers traded away half of the team today, and the Lakers made room in case LeBron would like to join them next year.

The Rockets made no trades like other teams doing well, though they have done some signings and will have to let a player or two to make room.

Signings: Brandan Wright and Joe Johnson.
Waived: Bobby Brown, either Tarik Black, Troy Williams, or Chinanu Onuaku

I don't like losing Black, the other two haven't seen much if any court time.

The Cavaliers did seem to get younger, more athletic, and more defensive-minded. Sorry to see Clarkson and Nance go, but it's a good trade for the Lakers, particularly with respect to their contract situation. And if IT balls, is happy there, and it works out beautifully, then that's a bonus.

I'm not really sure. I haven't watched a ton of basketball this year, in part because the Lakers haven't been very good (until lately....in the past sixteen games, they have the second best record in the NBA), I cut my cable, which had their channel, and I've been extraordinarily busy.

In the not so distant past, but after the Malone/Iverson era, the Hawks were young and athletic, and were maybe a team that might get bumped in the first or second round, but ran you up and down the court, if I recall correctly.

I became a fan when I lived in Atlanta, during the days of Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb, Doc Rivers. They had bad teams but they were a lot of fun. And you could always score good seats at Phipps Arena, since the place was usually half-empty.

It seemed like the Mike Budenholzer era was turning them around, but they're currently dead last in the East. idk

Great game. Raptors came out strong and had a fifteen point lead at the half. Rockets came back and made a lot of shots in the second, got it tied right near the end, but Toronto pulled it out. Tense last moments.

Raptors are a pretty good team, especially at home. Lowry was on, JV was on, the bench was (mostly) on. Even Drake was on, he called the end of the winning streak during a TV timeout. They might actually make it out of the East this year...

I keep forgetting how well they're doing. OTOH, I don't forget about Kyle Lowry. He was great here and I'm glad to see him doing even better up north.

I would think these are some of the most wide-open playoffs in the NBA in years, no?

I'm glad Westbrook got the triple double average again. A few years ago I was not a fan of his and thought of him as a ball hog. His team loyalty sticking with Oklahoma has won me over.

It's funny because there were stories this week about him padding his rebound stats, claiming his teammates are boxing out the opposition so he can grab them. He, of course, denies it.

There are a lot of talented teams that can go far, and a couple of recent champs that have struggled this season so it will be interesting to see how far they can go.

Much better than having teammates who are trying to keep you from getting rebounds. smile

I want to know who can stop the Sixers?

They have the most ridiculous amount of weaponry. The addition of Bellinelli and Ilyasova was key, as was Mr. Fultz becoming available. ROTY Simmons is playing lights out, as are Covington and Redick. They're killing everyone without Embiid - they should be even more formidable with him, I'd imagine.

They've had an amazing turnaround—from the worst four-year period of any team in NBA history to dominating the Heat in a Game 1 win. (Attention Phoenix Suns: here's your role model.)

While I do believe the 76ers could go all the way, since you asked who can stop them, the obvious top two candidates are the Cavaliers and ultimately, the Warriors, providing they don't get eliminated before Stephen Curry returns. Last, but possibly not least, Philly's own playoff inexperience could stop them.

Nonetheless, they are formidable opponents. You must be excited about their prospects, Dave. What a boon it would be for Philadelphia to have two championship teams in one year!

Best,

Geoff

15, but hoping the rest of the team returns for Game 2. Rockets were pretty cold from the three-point line last night. They did a lot of things right, and Harden threw them on his back and carried them the rest of the way, which was nice to have, but they can do better. If they don't, they're not going to last long.

And I keep wanting to start a pool about how long Derrick Rose stays healthy.

This Dodgers fan is rooting more for the Rockets than I was for the Astros, though—especially as a Suns fan who thought the team should never have parted ways with Mike D'Antoni. I would love to see a championship bring vindication to his system.

Right? His system is almost everywhere now, so doesn't he deserve to actually win the championship with it himself? grin

The end of regulation between BOS and MIL yesterday was ridiculous.

Sigh. I'd be less unhappy about that loss if the Rockets didn't look sorta slumpy in all three games so far.

How about the Pelicans taking it to the Trailblazers? shocked

No doubt. HOU is playing like they've been reading too many of their own press releases.

Way too much fun watching that... cool

I'm rooting for BOS to win their series. Assuming the Sixers make it past the Heat, I'd kinda like to see them play the Celtics next. evil

[I've been having a MASSIVE allergy attack this week so I haven't posted here in a few days. Apologies for the old news...]

50 points in a quarter? 50 points in a quarter? 50 points in a quarter? 50 points in a quarter??? Holy cow, what a game that was. And then they finished them off last night. I don't know why they've been having these slow starts (db, I agree they may be a touch too confident), but they are now getting the job done.

12 as well.

I think even if the Cavs survive this series, being pushed to the limit by Indiana might be a foreshadowing that this may be the first finals in a while without the the presence of Lebron....

Well.....they weren't a "big 3" to start with. Westbrook is WAY too self involved to even flirt with the idea of making others around him better. Also, everyone likes to chug the kool aid over 'Melo, and that guy, other than being a scorer back in the day, has been done for a while. Even in his heyday once the ball went to him no one ever saw it again. They are what they are, and that's all they'll ever be as constituted, IMO.....

Even though Harden and Paul seemed to want him, I've been very glad Melo ended up somewhere else. I agree with you about Westbrook, too. The one guy I might like to see get on a good team is Paul George.

Much as I love my Cavs, their '70's New York Yankees behind the scenes soap opera makes it very hard for me to root for them. And let's throw a Kardashian in the middle of it, just because why the heck not.
I long for the days of Lenny Wilkens classily directing Daugherty and Nance and Price.
That said, LeBron in the last week or so has been downright Jordanesque.

It's really cool to see him starting to get the recognition he deserves, as well as playing more and more consistently like we knew he could. Lori is getting to wear her Capela jersey to work today for some employee appreciation thing.

BTW, here's an interesting perspective on overconfidence.

GS roared back as you knew they would. The GS/Houston series is going to be a LOT of fun.

As much as this pains me to say, I cannot believe how well the Celtics are playing while not having two of their star players.

this long-time dubs fan is confident that as the level of adversity increases, so will the dubs' focus and resolve. this present incarnation has the bad habit of getting lackadaisical and sloppy when someone isn't trying to punch them in the mouth.

I know another team that's been doing something similar. It should be interesting when they get together for the Western Conference Finals!

I was bummed to see Toronto not put up a better fight. Lebron/the Cavs have really turned it on. Lebron, really.

LeBron is certainly raising his status in GOAT conversations.

Although carrying a mediocre team on your back didn't ultimately help John Elway, as he's rarely mentioned in NFL GOAT quarterback conversations now.

I guess time will tell...

Best,

Geoff

Why has Harden been "slumping"? [that is, not playing to the level we would expect]

“The performance Chris put out there,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said. “If he didn’t make it to the conference final this year, something is wrong. James (Harden) was under the weather. He was hurting. That (made it) even more important to get this over with. Chris stepped up and did it.'

“I know for sure he didn’t want to go back to Utah,” said Rockets forward Luc Mbah a Moute, a Clippers teammate Paul recruited to join him in Houston. “Knowing he’s gone through losing a series after being up 3-1, you could tell. Especially with James not feeling good, you could tell he was playing with a chip on his shoulder."

I've seen Harden do this before. He sometimes gets "under the weather" and doesn't play like his usual MVP self. Hopefully he'll be back to full strength by Monday's game against the Warriors. But it was nice to have another all-star to fall back on. CP3 did much of the work the last two games.

How about that Donovan Mitchell? It's too bad he went out late in the game, but he appears to have a great career in front of him. He didn't play like no rookie. thu

It's nice to be able to say...

I may be "mis remembering", but it seems to me like Harden is one of those guys whose productivity seems to drop a few notches come playoff time as a rule....

That has happened, but deepening the team especially with another PG like CP3 was supposed to fix that. He was able to not play as many minutes in the regular season because of the additions.

We will see next week how he does.

As an aside, I watched The Carter Effect on Netflix last night. Very cool one-hour documentary from last year about Vince's effect on basketball in Canada. Might not mean as much to y'all, but it struck a chord with me. I was never a huge basketball fan growing up, but Vince was basketball in Canada. Period. Steve Nash winning MVPs was huge too, but Air Canada/Vinsanity was what got kids like Wiggins, Thompson, Olynyk, Stauskas, Murray et al believing they could get to the next level. Seeing Vince play a game with the Grizzlies last year in NOLA was totally a bucket list moment for me. Recommended (hopefully it's on American Netflix too haha).

These über-athletes are still (somewhat) human, subject to fatigue and injury and the vagaries of age. Doubtless the adrenaline of finally getting what you want (conference finals vs. dubs) will fuel Game 1 for Houston. One wonders if carrying the burden will eventually wear upon JH and CP3 over the course of the entire series. As the Chinese proverb says, the only thing worse than not getting what you always wanted...is getting what you always wanted.

One of the luxuries of this dubs incarnation is the embarrassment of riches that allows "only human" to rest and recover (steph goes out, the team continues winning) compared to other teams (boogie, kyrie, rubio, mitchell, the list goes on).

Next week will be the real Finals either way. I still like our boys chances vs. Houston. And I believe whoever wins west will end up facing LeBron.

And I believe whoever faces LeBron will face our present GOAT candidate...who will be feeling the fatigue and consequences of mortality, as he has in previous Finals appearances.

Right now, I think dubs repeat, mainly because after all the possible matchups there isn't anybody left who's going to shut Durant down, if he shows up consistently.

I watched him a bunch as LSU. National announcers constantly criticized his teammates for being awful, but SEC schools like LSU don't recruit awful players. They never made the NCAA tournament with the "best" player in the nation. The next year after he went to the NBA those same players were suddenly much better. I'm seeing hints of the same thing at Philly. Of course the players are much better, but he does not seem to be doing anything to make them even better.

A lot of it is their defense, I think. It's amazing - these guys constantly attack/smother whoever has the ball. Really tough to get any sort of rhythm going against them....and they don't let up on it, either. idk

I noticed it in the Philly series, saw the same thing today.

The Celtics are a well. Coached. TEAM. I think the strategy of running a bunch of guys at Lebron is the best call, but then you have to have the guys at your disposal to execute that strategy. Even if the Cavs prevail, this has the makings of a long series, if the C's can play with the necessary discipline.....

I thought Rockets would win game one at home. I guess not! They started strong, but ran out of steam in Q4.

Dubs were very efficient tonight; Houston will need to bring something extra for game 2.

Finally, the Suns catch a break:

Suns grab No. 1 overall pick, with Kings, Hawks to pick 2nd, 3rd

This was the first time in franchise history that Phoenix won the lottery. Let's hope they draft well with their pick.

Best,

Tough game, after halftime Celtics masterfully stopped the Cavs from finding their rhythm.

I had this series pegged at Cleveland wins in seven. Not so sure now.

I like the Rockets' (over)confidence. Even on Tuesday, D'Antoni, Harden, etc. were being asked about how they played and shouldn't they play differently now. I think D'Antoni said something like, "have you watched us for 82 games? That's how we play."

Tonight should be interesting.

And wow, how about those Celts? Maybe we will have a Rockets/Celtics finals rematch. It's overdue. smile

Oh, hell no.

If the Cavs can find a way to win one in Cleveland - and I'm not even sure that's gonna happen - then I'm thinking it'll be Boston in five.

I hope I'm wrong. I am not a Celtics fan.

Can’t disagree with that. My prediction was made before Game 1. Although I still think it could go to Game 7, I wouldn’t bet on the Cavs taking it.

I never liked the Celtics either, but the way they have been kicking butt in the playoffs without Kyrie and Hayward, I can’t help but admire them.

In some ways it seems to me both the west and east conference series look like referendums on post-Jordan basketball.

What I mean: the outsized egos and natural obsession with superstars and "who's the next MJ?" has inevitably lead to this:

LBJ > Cavs
Harden > Rockets (and, mind you, d'Antoni's decades of convictions about system)

The plucky Celtics appear to be the far better team. The Warriors appear (to me) to be the better team than Houston.

But I would not say Durant > Warriors, Curry, Green or Thompson > Warriors. And I don't even know who is now supposed to be the dominant player for Boston now that their two are riding pine.

So it appears to me the two conference series play out to confirm the old adage that team > superstar.

Celtics > LBJ
Warriors > beard (+ CP3)

Maybe too simplistic. But what strikes me is that post-Jordan, we have the most extreme example of the next possible heir apparent to carry a team on his lonely shoulders. And even here, LBJ doesn't look like he'll be able to carry the Cavs all the way to the Finals, much less to hoisting the trophy. And quite frankly, this is a prison of his own making and the natural end and conclusion to what the Lebron as offense, coach and focal point of the universe inevitably points to.

Just my 0.02. Probably meaningless. Oh well off to my next meeting.

I think this has a lot of truth going for it. The Cavs role players will almost certainly play better at home. They'll HAVE to, because it's been shown that even with a great effort from Lebron the C's can prevail....I see them splitting the next 2 in Cleveland, leaving the Celts with an opportunity to wrap it up in Boston. If that happens we'll probably see Bron Bron out on the west coast next year.....

I think Horford is the one who's supposed to be holding the baton at the moment. Really hard to tell, though - last night, Marcus Smart was kind of the guy.

I so want to dislike this team...but MAN, I love teams that play basketball like this. The D especially.

Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about! The Rockets are supposed to look like *that.* Even if they lost playing like that, then that's (mostly) fine. Sometimes shootouts go until there's one left standing.

Hopefully Curry and CP3 are fine and the series will be two healthy teams.

+1. He truly is the de facto GM. As big as Jordan got, and as much as the ego clashed with the coach (Collins), LeBron has taken it to a whole new level of manipulation and control to make the star happy.
As much as I respect his talent and love the Cavs, it'll probably be best to just let him go. It's just become an abusive relationship at this point.
One of the few things that turn me into a grouchy old man is the current NBA. Traveling, loss of the game in the paint and the loss of the power of the big man, superteams, whining, the lust for the three-pointer... it just keeps getting more annoying.

(Go Browns)

I don't understand the opinions of the ESPN talk show crew. They all talk about how Lebron makes all the personnel decisions. And they all talk about how bad a job management has done putting talent around Lebron. He has been his own worst enemy. He made all the decisions that left Cleveland with no good players and nothing to trade.

The first part of that game was how I expected the series to go. Why the Rockets weren't dropping their shots after that I don't know. frown

I don't mind it going back and forth, but at that rate, the Warriors will hit 4 wins before the Rockets. Oops.

The series has gotten interesting, and Lebron has shown that he really is the best player in the NBA, no matter who gets the MVP.

On the other hand, that unpredictability is part of what makes sports so fun to watch. cool

Unfortunately, the NBA is the most predictable of any league that we Americans typically enjoy; and if we wind up with yet another Golden State/Cleveland Finals, the anticipation that many of us had that it might have turned out differently will have been just an illusion.

Best,

Geoff

I can't see how any rational person doesn't vote LeBron for MVP.

Even the other candidates (some with delusional levels of ego) have to acknowledge what he is doing right now is on a higher level than anyone else in the league.

So far this series is TOTALLY predictable......role players play way better at home, and Boston has been havig a hard time winning on the road. Thing is, if it plays out to game 7, then you have to like the Cavs chances to win ONE game with the best player in the world living in their locker room. If Boston had its two best guys I think they would be looking to clinch this thing in the next game (if it wasn't over already) but that's the way it goes......

What a game.

I dunno about you, but I kind of expected Harden passing up that open three in the first to come back and bite him. Chris Paul looked fired up at the end there.

Like I said earlier, I think that game was what we expected this series to look like. My poor wife was really stressed at the end. She didn't even realize the game "ended" until I said "yes!" and she was so relieved, only to find out it really wasn't over. I teased her and said, "wouldn't it be funny if he made one free throw, the Warriors inbound it and make the three to tie it?"

I'm kinda mean that way. evil

I am glad the series is rebalanced. The Rockets are great when they play with "force." I hope they do two more times, at least.

BTW, why is D'Antoni's rotation down to like, seven guys? I know some guys are only going to get garbage time, but Nene played all season when he was healthy.

I had to listen on the radio as I was driving home from lecture. Frustrating and disappointing. An embarrassment of riches squandered, at least for one quarter (and one game as a result).

I'm sure there's quite a few dubs fans still in a little shock, as there was quite a bit of expectation for the fairy-tale ending.

But this really becomes a test of their mettle - they've made this kind of mistake before, and know what that movie ending feels like. i'm quite interested to see if our dubs get their focus and attention back.

They've already won big, and won in Houston, which would seem to me to make it very much obvious (IMHO) that the series is primarily the dubs to lose.

My guess is they will face a more fired up version than if last night had been a blowout (either way).

It's funny you say that, Tim. I feel like last night's game was what we expected from this series, a horse race that when both teams are playing their best, it might just be a little luck that results in who is leading when the clock runs out. IOW, I'm not sure the Warriors did anything wrong. Both teams did well and poorly at some points of the game. Also, like the link I provided previously, both teams played defense, which I think the relatively low score shows. That was pretty cool to see, actually. Just think of it, two high-scoring teams playing D and overall keeping the score down.

Joe - I think my perspective comes from the belief that the dubs have made a habit of coasting...simply because they can, and get away with it with style. They've done it for entire seasons at a time (multiple), as well as entire first rounds of playoffs.

They do because they can. Curry injured? Yawn. Poor first half? Yawn. And so many times, because of the loaded deck they have (and, I believe, the strategic superiority of the team-first system), it still results in a lopsided blowout.

For at least our side of the ball, it seemed apparent to me that after the typical 3rd quarter surge, we just got distracted by our own bright shiny objects. And didn't keep our foot on the neck. Because we've gotten used to not having to...not just during the regular season, just look at Game 3.

Again, I do believe when the dubs are at their best, there isn't another team currently in contention (or the league) that is really built to beat us. Respectfully, I do not believe the Rockets are fundamentally built to beat us (just look at the last 3 games). I believe what's built to beat the dubs is...the dubs.

And that's a cliffhanger for dubs fans. We'll see what they bring Game 5. More shall be revealed.

Tim, I know what you mean and don’t necessarily disagree, but I think the Rockets’ defense in Q4 yesterday really shut the Dubs down. I mean, you rarely see them miss that many shots, or take that many wild ones.

Houston knew they had to win one away, and they did. Defeating GSW at home is no mean feat, and they earned it. I don’t think it was just because the Dubs were coasting.

That may be - again, I'm at the disadvantage of not seeing Q4, only hearing on the radio.

At the same time, I don't think if they had their head all the way in at the start of Q4 that Houston's defense is so stifling as to negate a great offense entirely. Sure every great team these days can go on a run...and go cold.

But we have the offensive system and horsepower to overcome any defense. What I heard last night was a team that took their eyes off the gold ring for 7 minutes of the game, and I think it's because they thought 10 point lead was sufficient to start celebrating.

Maybe we're all correct. But like I said, I wasn't able to watch q4 at all.

I fully agree with Menno. Houston had the fire on D in a big way. Tim - you had to see the look in the eyes of some of these guys - laser focused, way lit. Chris Paul stood out in that respect for me.

Tim, if you look back in this thread, we've said some of the same things about the Rockets. They are a great team, and have lots of firepower. Yet they've coasted a bit in these playoffs. My wife keeps saying if the Rockets from a few months ago "showed up," they'd be blowing everyone out. I think that's mostly true. The games and quarters where the Rockets haven't dominated, they didn't look like that team. At best, they looked like a team. A good team perhaps, but not the team that went 65 - 17, had great winning streaks, etc. It has felt like in the playoffs and the latter part of the regular season they've coasted a bit.

It's like the Warriors and the Rockets are two napping giants, and the series will go to the one that wakes up and stays awake until they win.

I think game 6 is THE game. Obviously if the Celts win it's a done deal, but if home cookin' prevails and the the Cavs take it I'd be hard pressed to bet against Lebron in game 7, the Celts stellar performances at home to date not withstanding.....

Joe that all makes sense.

Sadly, my head is sort of not in it right now. Yesterday was one of the worst days in my professional life I have experienced in maybe 5 years. I'm not even in the mood to watch the game tonight, perhaps as the day goes on my head will turn around.

Chris Paul has a hamstring injury, that sucks royally for Houston. But it kind of evens out Iguodala’s absence on the Dubs’ side.

I haven't watched the Rockets that much (or the NBA in general in recent years) but I found the difference in demeanor between Harden and cp3 very interesting. Is Harden always so cold fish, especially in big games? He just came across as scared, or uncaring, and it seemed pretty obvious his confidence was shot.

Somehow they won that game, almost all the stats said "Warriors win". Rockets were tougher was what it boiled down to.

My guess is that he may be done for longer than that. The expression on his face did not look good to me.

We'd rather have CP3 out tonight and back sooner than risk it, I guess. I saw a post from someone who said they saw him and CP3 was like, "I'll be alright" idk

I don't agree. He has an odd demeanor, but then again CP3 always looks mad when he plays. Even when he did this.

Thanks for the well-wishes. As things become clearer on my end I may share in another thread soon.

Back on topic, I think Harden has always seemed to have an outward demeanor that's just different. So I don't think I can read anything into whatever his face and body language seem to be indicating. I know he's taken a lot of flack over the years for appearing disinterested, giving up, or whatever. But I don't think that's the case. CP3 always seemed to look pissed off to me. First time I saw him was a game I attended @ Oracle when the Hornest played the dubs (when the dubs were still awful) and he was only playing at 3/4 speed and wiping the floor with us. And looked 110% pissed. Every game I watched on TV when he was with Clippers - looked pissed. Again, I don't really think I can read anything into it. Playing at that high a level, I just assume different guys handle it different ways in their outward demeanor.

But LeBron? I've said before I wasn't a fan, but...damn. I really have to take my hat off to him no matter how these playoffs turn out. Even watching so much of the Jordan kingdom years...man, this is different than anything else I think I've seen.

Yeah, Lebron’s individual qualities are beyond compare. He just needs to find his Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson.

I'd be really shocked it Lebron doesn't find a way to beat the Celts in game 7, Kevin Love's condition not withstanding.....I don't think he's going to able to beat either Houston or the Dubs in a 7 game series himself, however.....

The home team has prevailed in every game so far in the Eastern Conference Finals, so if the Cavaliers win in Boston for Game 7, it'll be a first.

Of course, LeBron is good enough to overcome the odds—as he has on many occasions—but considering both the home court factor and the LeBron factor, I'd be hard pressed to wager either way. It sounds like a case of the irresistible force meeting the immovable object.

Geoff

Wow, we get two Game Sevens this year...

I’m kind of rooting for the Dubs, but if C3P0 is fit for game 7, I think the odds are Houston will clinch it with the home advantage. Not to mention Iguodala is likely to remain out.

Game 7 in Boston? I honestly have no idea, but even though the Celtics have won me over these playoffs, I kind of hope the Cavs advance as I think they are easier to beat!

All true, but there's a special kind of pucker factor in a game 7, even if it IS in your building. Bron Bron will either come out focused and mega aggressive, or, if he feels like his ticket may be punched to a new zip code, maybe not so much, in which case the Celts will definitely prevail. It's crazy how the whole thing hinges on ONE guys mindset.....

Kinda bummed that the Rockets lost that one. I *really* thought they had it under control this time. OTOH, they'll get to win the series at home, which is what we really wanted anyway. wink

Well, Menno, you got your wish, but the Cav's looked really good in the 2nd half of game 7. As always, YMMV.

LeBron seems to be outplaying even himself. Not a minute's rest in Game 7.

Eight straight NBA Finals appearances. Hard not to be impressed by that!

Props to area51recording and Tim for calling tonight's road win.

Best,

I only caught the last three minutes of the game, but apparently Jayson Tatums’s stock went up a lot after he dunked on Lebron?

My boys were raving about it.

And after all that, the usual suspects go to the Finals.

My money is on the Dubs. The ease with which they won this game leads me to think they have more in the tank.

Oh well, at least both Conference Finals went to 7. The same old teams didn't coast into the NBA Finals this time. Maybe next year will give us some variety.

My condolences to Joe and congratulations to Tim.

Fourth time the same teams have met in the Finals. Crazy.

Although I guessed right - Warriors in 7 - while watching the game, I actually thought the Rockets might pull this one out this time. I never thought that about the Celtics while watching Game 7.

They needed Chris Paul for that to happen. Injuries are game changers.

To be fair, the Dubs missed Iguodala, but agreed Chris Paul is a much bigger factor for the Rockets.

However, Iggy is the key to containing Lebron for GSW.

No, not boring for me, but I’m rooting for the Warriors smile

Seriously, I really rate them for how they have changed the way the game is played. Back in 2014, nobody was playing like that. Now, everybody has had to step up and adjust their style. Even Lebron.

But I do feel that both the Rockets and Celtics deserved to advance just as much as the Dubs and Cavs, though.

Thanks for any condolences. The Rockets were so close, even without CP3. I do wonder why Harden was missing so many shots in the series. I get his "who cares, as long as we win?" attitude, but when they're not winning, he needs to make those shots. Or heck, someone had to and no one did. Ugh. Ariza was a great defender but a horrible shooter throughout the playoffs, I think. I felt like he wasn't making any shots.

I can't imagine Lebron will be able to carry the Cavs past the Warriors by himself. That team is just too deep. But, I won't be watching because my wife is pretty pissed about the Rockets' loss and is sick of GSW. I might be able to sneak a peek while she's asleep or on my iPad...

Well, the overtime period was anticlimactic; but the fact alone that the game reached overtime was a nice rarity in this postseason.

Over 50 points from LeBron was impressive too.

Just one game.

And the J.R. Smith gaffe will be mostly forgotten if they win the series. I feel bad for the guy, having a mental lapse on the biggest stage in their profession.

Still, I have some jokes:

- I think I just heard the sound of LeBron unfollowing JR on Twitter.
- Someday JR will emerge from obscurity to lead a middle school team to the state title.
- I just met a 1st grade teacher who wishes she'd spent more time on arithmetic years ago with a young kid named JR.
- Tyron Lue wishes JR would go back to basketball IQ stuff. Like untying peoples shoelaces.

I got two shows nightly, at 11pm and 11:05! Remember to tip your servers!!

Seriously, Cavs deserved to win that won. No way dubs should take anything away but relief. They didn't deserve that game. Glad Klay's not seriously injured, didn't know there was a way we could steal a home game.

With the Dubs I'm not always sure if they're even for real.

Sometimes I get the feeling they're just dialing it down to make it look like a match, and that they could comfortably win everything if they played flat out all the time.

The Cavs SHOULD have won that game. 51 points is a HELL of a total in the finals, and JR and Co. squandered that effort. The Dubs survived the Rockets playing like they are now, but it seems to me that here lately they go through stretches where they have a stylistic change in their play, and not for the better. Seems like they kind of abandon that whole Harlem Globetrotter thing with whipping the ball around and go to more of an ISO game, which in my opinion turns them into just another good team, but a beatable one. The Cavs need Lebron to be Hercules every game in order to have a chance, and you'd think the guy would be gassed by now, but seems to be holding up. I think this one's going 7, and if it does, just like the Boston series, I wouldn't bet against Lebron in one must-have game....

Obviously, LBJ is an extremely talented athlete. But, I *hate* the way Cleveland runs those predictable iso plays through him.

Despite the fact that basketball is supposed to be a team sport, the Cavs often look like a one man show.

OTOH, the Dubs have four (4) stars and at any given moment they can light it up as a unit or individually. They are a fun team to watch even to this Wizards fan.

QFT. thu

Maybe the Dubs challenge themselves by playing lackluster and then turning all the way up. laughcool

Before Game 1, I thought the Warriors would win in 6, and not sweep the Cavs the way Jeff Van Gundy were spouting.

Why? In part because of what area51recording says above. The Warriors are not playing like themselves for long stretches, doing more ISO plays instead of all that fantastic sharing the ball.

Also, No Iguodala. He plays good defense against Lebron, is smart, and calms the Warriors down a bit.

Sometimes, the Warriors seem bizarrely unfocused.

And finally, Lebron is playing unreal ball. I really can't don't like the guy, but there is no denying is superhuman achievements.

I also want to say - and bear in mind that I am rooting for the Warriors - that the Cavs got some raw calls. The Durant charge vs. block thing was dubious. But there were some other calls in the last two minutes, including someone grabbing Lebron's arm and a lane violation on Hill's last free throw that were all missed.

Regardless, I think we're in for a very competitive series.

So that was comfortable win for the Dubs. I’m sure the Cavs will give them a harder time at home, but Lebron needs to score 50 pts. every game if he wants to go all the way. I don’t see anybody else on his team winning it for them.

The Warriors felt like they were in control for much of Game 2.

But the role players generally play better at home, so I'm figuring that the Cavs will win at least one on their home court.

Will Lebron need to be superhuman again for them to win?

Can there be any doubt that KD is THE best player in the series?

He has ice water running in his veins. The Cavs did a good job shutting down Curry and Thompson, but that just means KD goes to town.

I don’t know how the Cavs are gonna turn this around on Friday.

KD = MVP. No doubt.

I cannot bring myself to watch. It is Lebron vs. the all stars and clearly unfair. I think the series has clearly proven that Lebron is the best player, period. Trade him with KD and Cleveland would be a .500 team.

It's not unfair.....to a large extent Lebron is experiencing the other end of a trend he helped start when he went to Miami. The Heat in that early time would shove that whole "bully ball" deal down other team's throats because they simply had too many weapons to deal with. I'll bet it was a whole lot more satisfying to be on THAT end of the equation for Lebron than this though....

I don't have much to add to the topic.

There is a conspiracy theory gnawing at me slightly. The refs.

The refs are due to show the stupid again and effect the outcome of the series.
Other than being yelled at by the head coach, I don't see where bad ref judgment is
held accountable.

Anyway, the refs should never be the main story in a series at this level.

IOW, I would much prefer a clean, non controversial game 4.

Agreed.

I also believe LBJ is reaping the reward of forcing the Cavs to build a team to facilitate his one man show.

IMO, as a solo act with the team as a front, LBJ will never win another championship against a real team.

Also IMO, if Draymond Green hadn't been suspended in 2016, the Cavs would not have won that series either.

The Cavs probably will not get swept at home. The Dubs will close it out back in Oakland. cool

not the conspiracy theory I was suggesting.

More like the refs can screw up 1 game. Check out the 2017 finals and your memory :

CAN they screw up 1 game? Sure, in any sport, absolutely. And if this were a tightly contested series, maybe that would matter, but the fact is the better team is winning this thing. And unlike a week ago when I thought that Lebron could find a way to push it to 7, it ain't gonna be close. Every team in any sport at one time of or another is the victim of less than optimal officiating, but in this case I don't see a raft of iffy calls changing the outcome much. Also I wasn't suggesting any kind of "Hey, let's make sure Lebron doesn't win" conspiracy.....you can have none of that at all and STILL have a badly called game(s)....

And then there was Curry's ejection from Game 6 over some questionable fouls; it felt like there was an effort from the league to make Cleveland's fairy tale happen.

edit:

On a different note, how about Lebron giving himself that alley-oop?

Right. thu

LBJ alley-ooping himself...in the words of Mark Jackson, "there goes that man."

Individual highlight material and stats won't win the trophy. laughcool

As a questionable call helped send Game 1 to overtime, I think you can make a case that the Warriors would be up 2-1, instead of 3-0, if it weren't for the refs.

I do agree with your bottom line, though.

KD will likely get MVP. He's been the most consistent so far.

Iguodala was sorely missed, and when he was out on the floor, the team functioned better despite him not being 100%.

Congrats on your success, Dave.

I generally skip most NBA and MLB regular season games. If you start watching during the playoffs, you still could end up watching more games than you would for an entire NFL regular season and playoffs combined.

Depending on how you look at it, we're either in the boring middle of one of the most predictable eras in NBA history or in an exciting era in which we're witnessing one of the greatest teams of all time and possibly the greatest player of all time.

As a Suns/Lakers fan, it's mostly boring for me; but I do appreciate greatness, even if it does lead to predictability.

Looking back at the playoffs that just ended, I'm grateful for two seven game Conference Finals and an overtime Game One of the NBA Finals.

Best,

Geoff

I think I watched half of a Lakers game during the regular season, maybe one other one, I don't remember. I was super busy this year, and there wasn't anything seriously compelling with the Lakers anyway.

I sort of look at it both ways. I do like the free-flowing offense and tough, swarming defense that the Warriors have, and they are really talented. And with the exception of Durant, they created this team largely through draft picks, and draft picks that weren't even that high, getting Green, Curry, and Thompson in the process. It's hardly the collusion that Lebron engineered to go to Miami.

That said, Bronbron played brilliantly throughout the playoffs, hauling his team to the Finals.

They didn't hustle or go for the "50/50 balls" in the 3rd quarter. They were resigned to the outcome.

When you have several of the Warriors playing really good solid games and hitting their shots, how would they beat them?

Before the beginning of the Finals, I thought it might be the Warriors in six, not a sweep, as others had predicted. So, given how Game 1 went, I was one game off in a way since the refs hosed that game and J.R. kicked it to the curb. grin

I say this while I was rooting for the Warriors.

In the wake of the continued dominance by the Warriors, I find myself that much more impressed that LeBron and Co. were able beat them in 2016. This Warriors team is a powerhouse.

I know LeBron's free agency will get the most press, but to me the most intriguing possibility is that Kevin Durant decides he has achieved his goals in Golden State and elects to move to a different team. Unlikely, I know, but it'd make the NBA very interesting next year.

Time to start the "Where is Lebron heading?" speculation....I doubt Durant is going anywhere. Why would he? This team as constituted could win several more titles, and I think for a guy like Durant that is probably more important than being "The Man" on a lesser team.....

That's for the 2018 - 2019 thread, buddy, poke cop wink *

Congrats, Warriors fans. That's quite a dynasty you have there.

* There's lots of speculation and talk about the Rockets too, like who they're going to keep with all the free agents, and who might they be able to bring in like Paul George or Deandre Jordan (the latter especially if they lose Capela in free agency). Some talk of Lebron, too, but I don't see it.
