I am thinking of getting a stereo preamp for my SK1-73 to (1) warming up the output and (2) being able to dial in some gain, especially at end of Blues Jam evening to compete with stupid-loud guitars (I'm plugged into FOH). Any ideas?

Actually probably preamp is not correct, a stereo mixer is probably what I am looking for.

I use the radial j+4 and it works well for me. A mixer would be fine too.

Overdrivng FOH will only get you so far. Maybe bring a few thousand watts of personal amplification? That's my normal response to over-loud guitarists -- make their ears hurt for a while until they get the message.

"Gee, am I too loud? I couldn't hear myself over your ferocious noise, so I just turned up a bit. Maybe if you turned down?"

Yeah, I have SS XL on order but will sometimes have to play through FOH. The J+4 looks very interesting.

The new Radial Key-Largo looks killer - I've got mine on order.

You want a Key Largo. Just back from my gig with mine.

Very nice piece of kit.

Hi Tim,

Where do you mount this?

Also, what is the purpose of the USB port, and why would you want to connect it to a laptop?

Looks very nice, and I like nice...

Jim,

Right now, I place the KL on the RH blank panel of my Kronos 73. It's heavy enough that all the cabling isn't going to pull it or tilt it (solid weighty piece, like Radial's DIs).

This also makes volume adjustments as simple as reaching for a knob on the Kronos front panel....the answer to "I need that little push over the edge" (Spinal Tap reference).

The KL's computer interface seems really well thought out too (for MainStage, at least). One USB cord from laptop to KL, one standard MIDI cord from your controller to KL - bang - you have MainStage operating as another KB input to the KL with its own dedicated volume control.

I haven't used it yet, as I moved away from software live a long time ago...but I may try it again now that the cabling issues have been neatly consolidated.

Tim

Here's a corollary:

Have you ever know ANYONE, including yourself, who (when asked by the sound man during sound check), to play at your loudest... ever does?

The answer: nobody. Everybody wants the ability to turn up when the pack starts to howl.

Used it at a gig two nights ago, and it worked really well. Thanks for the suggestion

Decent blues guitar players should be loud be really never too loud. Probabky the territory of a fuzz and wah pedal...

No replies on other thread so...

I like to have stereo monitoring even if FOH is mono.

With Key Largo, is there a way to only send one output to FOH that is Mono?

(Must one resort to using effects send to FOH, thereby requiring another direct box)

Barry,

The Key Largo routing is set up as stereo. If it senses only L input, then it routes that input to both outputs.

So, if you're running stereo inputs (to take advantage of stereo monitoring), than you'll get stereo outs at the Main outputs.

If for whatever reason you absolutely need summed L+R mono output, you'll need to use either the effects send, or sum it another way.
