Grazing in the Grass for a hot summer afternoon, Soulful Strut for a warm summer evening.

I got my band many years ago to play Soulful Strut. I had to play horn parts as well as the piano. Once learned, it was like pulling teeth to get band leader to call it though.

Love them both, and you could go into the Swing Out Sister version of Soulful Strut

I played both of them in solo situations. Soulful Strut works better, cause it's harder to cover all the parts on Grazing in the Grass as a solo work.

I worked up a gospel type intro on the C Dm F start of Soulful Strut. This song almost always gets the audience's attention when I launch into it.

This trumpet player says don't play Grazing In The Grass without real horns.

Both these songs aren't that easy to pull off either.

I already play the Hugh Masekela version of Grazing In The Grass, and I want to learn Soulful Strut, but the Walter Wanderley version:

If I could figure out how, I'd change my vote. Initially listened to both, remembered them both, but felt that Grazin' was a more complete musical thing.

But, for the last few days I find myself humming the trumpet opening to Soulful Strut. Over and over. The hook stuck. It's catchy. I'm caught.

I hear you, PianoMan51. The horn opening is so catchy and strong, and then the piano comes in as surprisingly subdued in comparison. It runs the risk of sounding small after the big horn line, but instead grabs me as a very intimate juxtaposition.

After several days of pondering, I think this song battle really comes down to whether you like your summertime horn/piano instrumentals with a heavy dose of tambourine or cowbell!
