Around the five minute mark you get a decent view of a white box next to the Mini that almost looks like a SEM. Anyone know what it is?

It IS an original SEM. You can tell from 1) the logo in the LH corner of the front panel when the vid starts, 2) the concentric knobs for the oscillators on the upper LH part of the top panel.

And while I am asking for gear spotting help, what is the keyboard in this video that he is playing through the MiniMoog filter?

Yamaha VL1 or VL7. Definitely not an AN1X.

For 1999, that's a really good guess, with the placement of the LCD and the key lip "overhang" on the RH cheek block.

Or Nord Lead.

Then it must be a VL 1, although it sounds to me like he is playing more than 2 notes at a time.

I didn't see more than 2 at a time in the brief snippet I watched; I was merely checking for telltale physical signs: the right end cheek that's wide and slopes down and outwards as it approaches the front; the colour; 4 octaves; and the display size/position. There's also a moment where I could almost verify the 3 wheels on the left. That was more than enough to tell me what it was. twothumbs

at 23 seconds in, he's playing chords

You see chords, I see/hear double-stops. wink

Could be, maybe an audio illusion, that I thought I heard the root, on my laptop speakers where I think my brain is used to filling stuff in...

Yeah, I was hearing triads at first as well, but after repeated listenings I'm pretty sure it's 2-note figures, with slides changing the lower of the two notes while the high note remains constant.

At least that's how I rationalized it.... because there's nothing else that looks physically like the VL1 in the aforementioned ways.

I was thinking chords too, but this guy is good at getting the most out of his hardware. It could be slides that are fooling my ears. My ears are easily fooled.

Definitely chords. I think he's MIDI controlling something. Also I've read somewhere that he's not playing the Yamaha through the Moog filter, but he's MIDI controlling the Minimoog because its keyboard is busted. Given his Minimoog is MIDI retrofitted, it could be polyphonic-retrofitted too.

Yeah, and apparently "make it sound absolutely nothing like an analog synth"-retrofitted, as well. Good theory. twothumbs roll
