Holy jeez-another from the `never saw that coming` file.
One of my favorite rock singers. Truly a shame.
RIP

Don't know much about them OR him save for a couple of tunes I liked. According to your link, it happened here in the "D".

MUCH too young, so it's that much sadder to learn. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

I thought of Cornell as the Paul Rodgers of his generation. Such a strong, passionate voice, whether singing something soft or wailing. Not too "pretty", like a polished pop singer, but not as far off-tune as Eddie Veder or Michael Stipe.

He will truly be missed.

Sad to hear this. I barely recognize the band names that he was with as I did not follow their music but still feel sad for his friends and family. Jim

Local 4 news in Detroit just reported that he was found after a show hanging in his room at the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino.

An apparent suicide.

Yeah- now widely reported as a suicide by hanging.

Adding to the pathos- for me, anyway- is that Sondgarden reportedly played one of their best shows in years, and that the last song of that evening's show was a cover of "In My Time of Dying".

I only got to see him in person once: mid-1990s, Soundgarden co-headlined (actually alternated headliner's set slot) with Pearl Jam, with Monster Magnet and Swervedriver supporting. One of the best shows I ever saw. $10.

"In My Time Of Dyin' "? DAMN that's freaky. shocked

Suicide just makes it all that much sadder since you HAD to know he must have had plenty of caring people to reach out to. And by NOT doing so, leaves the ones left behind wondering maybe there was something they could have done to help. Or also wondering if he had some bad news of finding he might have had some terminal illness and thought it would be less painful for them that way.

That sounds like I'm grasping at straws, but his survivors will also be doing plenty of that. Believe me. I've been there( an old friend). And also once came close to that edge myself. But thank God I lacked the courage.

Now I read his wife claimed he was taking the anti-anxiety drug ATIVAN (didn't say why) and he might have taken a couple extra before the show. Not sure how much of a factor that would be though...

The top five grunge bands are/were, in no particular order: Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains. The lead singer from Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, died from suicide. Scott Weiland, lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots, died from a drug overdose. The lead singer from Alice In Chains, Layne Staley, died from a drug overdose. And Chris Cornell, the lead singer from Soundgarden just died last week from suicide. The lead singer from Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder, is still alive, and hopefully will stick around for a long time. Still, it would be a good idea if someone close to him kept an eye on him constantly for the next decade or so.

I don't think the idea was that the Ativan caused an OVERDOSE, but somehow otherwise didn't prevent the suicide. And suicidal thoughts is one of the listed possible "side effects" of that medicine. And Chris taking EXTRA doses in this case, didn't help.

Don't forget Mother Love Bone's Andrew Wood, who ODed. His death led to the creation of Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog.

I once asked my doctor why "Suicidal Thoughts" would be among the side effects of anti-depressants & anti-anxiety drugs. She explained that many of the drugs have slight stimulant effects, which means that suddenly the depressed person has more energy to act on their thoughts & impulses, and possibly, less inhibition about acting them out.

I hate that anyone should feel such pain and despair that death seems the only possible relief, but I am in no position to judge another person's suffering, even less to condemn. I wish the poor man peace . . .

I have known two people that have committed suicide due to drugs. One was a close friend at work and the other was one of my uncles. In both cases they had on-going chronic physical pain and could not avoid having to take pain killing drugs. They were both great guys until they had to start taking the pain killers. They could no longer function in society or with friends and family while on the drugs. They could not stand the pain when they were off the drugs. So, they chose to off themselves...I can understand why they made those choices. cool

My family was discussing Cornell's suicide yesterday, and my Dad- an MD- made precisely the same point,

He also stressed that the same suicidal risk applied even in the absence of drugs: the most dangerous time for a depressed person is when they are emerging from their depression, not sinking into it.

That's all well and good. However....

The drug Chris was using, ATIVAN(lorazepam) is NOT an anti-depressant. It's usually used to treat alcohol withdrawal, anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disorders or seizures. Sometimes given to patients to calm them down before a surgery(if anxious about the procedure).

It's in the same class as XANAX. And as "suicidal thoughts" ARE a possible side effect of it, and it was reported he took a couple EXTRA doses that night, it's quite possible the drug played a large part in his action.
