I remember back in the 70's coming across an import album from Elton John with some really odd songs I'd never heard before. I've never seen it since and totally forgot the name of the album, but I'm pretty sure this different version of "Grey Seal" was on it (posted below).

Over the years, there have been other songs I've found that people might not be familiar with including the following.

This interesting tune from a blue vinyl Genesis record.

This is well-know by many Justin Hayward fans, but not a Moody Blues song.
It's from Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds.

What have you come across over the years?

That Elton John album might have been Empty Sky from 1969. This was not released in the US for many years. The song Lady Samantha which was recorded around the same time but not included on original pressings of the album was covered by Three Dog Night on their 1969 Suitable for Framing album. They also recorded Your Song in 1970 about six months before Elton's version was released in the US.

I did some digging online and found it on eBay! A cassette compilation of obscure Elton Songs.

"What's the New Mary Jane" by The Beatles. From their India days. A weird pastiche, almost like "You Know My Name" but less chaotic. It was meant to be a 45 single release but got yanked; there's a catalogue number for it though.

This is one of my favorites. Wore out GYBR back in the day.
This version is much more refined than the GYBR recording. Some tasty altered chords.

Another rarity from the 70's... Steve Walsh of Kansas as guest vocalist on Steve Hackett's solo album "Please Don't Touch."

Ringo Starr - Sentimental Journey
First solo album of standards in 1970. He chose to record standards that would reflect his mother's favorite songs.

One of my fonder Bowie remembrances: the Bertold Brecht/Kurt Weill composition, "Alabama Song." I've always admired his ability to take colorful left turns,

That's a great album. Also love the cuts with Richie Havens and Randy Crawford. "Hoping Love Will Last" is stunning.

In a similar vein, one of my bands plays the below version of Pink Floyd's Empty Spaces/What Shall We Do Now, which is in the Wall Movie and the Wall live album, but not on the studio album.

What Shall We Do Now starts at approx. 2:05. I think it qualifies as "obscure" as quite a few Floyd fans I meet are unaware of (or have forgotten) its existence.

In 1970 The Four Tops collaborated with members of The Moody Blues and their producer Tony Clarke to record three songs. The best known is "A Simple Game" written by Mellotron player Mike Pinder which in 1971 reached #3 on the UK charts but only made #90 in the US. The other two songs are "So Deep Within You" also written by Pinder and "You Stole My Love" written by Justin Hayward and Tony Clarke. Arranger on the sessions was Arthur Greenslade famous for arranging "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey.

The "America" cover was done to get Howe and Wakeman comfortable with the band's creative process and work habits, as I recall. I far prefer the long version to the single, or to Simon & Garfunkel's original.

Try this, it is in addition to the first post above with all three tracks on the EP - it's truly awful:

Neither the group or the song are obscure, but I never guessed that they would cross paths:

When they were still a pseudo-prog mostly-instrumental band, Journey did an awesome cover of George Harrison's "It's All Too Much" that might even top The Beatles' original (no mean feat!).

Very few Journey fans know their first two albums, and they're often out of print. But even more obscure is an instrumental "soundtrack" album that they did long into Steve Perry's tenure. I forget its name; I didn't like it so tossed it right away.

"Hey, Hey, What Can I Do" by Led Zeppelin was released in 1970 as the B-side of the "Immigrant Song" single and wasn't included on any US vinyl album. I heard the song on the radio at the time but couldn't find it anywhere. It apparently didn't become available until many years later on CD.

Here's one I heard on the radio this morning from WPKN in CT. We get that station only on the North Shore of Long Island, the rest of the Island does not...they play better music on the other side of the LI sound....guess it goes along with the No-Helmet laws over there:

Good Tune for 4/20 BTW, think that was the idea! wink puff
