...after 10 years of Red.

The first "pro-level" keyboard I ever bought, back in the day, was a Kurzweil PC88 -- typical tank-like Kurz build and versatility. I played that board for years, then donated it to a church and moved to a PC1se which was my main axe for another long stretch. I just loved the Kurzweil brand.

Then one day a pretty Red Electro 2 turned my head and I became a prodigal of the true faith. In stark contrast to my steadfast K-days, though, the Reds never seemed to quite satisfy. Electro 2 gave way to Stage Compact, then to Stage 76, Electro 4, Piano 2, Electro 5... The endless parade of Red continued for a decade.

Until this week when I was finally rescued from my terrible waywardness, and restored to faith and fidelity by the gospel call of a Forte 7.

I've come home again. May I be forgiven, in my weakness, for succumbing to the siren song of the Norse.

Hallelujah! I am clean again. cry rockit twothumbs

Although, technically, the Kurzweils were generally considered to be (depending on the model) a Deep Purple or a Dark Grey.

I personally wish the trend towards black would go away fast -- it is the single-most impractical colour for gear -- especially for those of us over 50 who have a hard enough time of it as it is, reading in the dark, and with light-against-dark (vs. the inverse) contrast, whether indoors or outside.

Or, more accurately, you ditched Nord for Young Chang (Kurzweil In Name Only).

I'm very interested in your review on this and especially in the head-to-head with your Nord Electro 5HP. Pianos, EPs, organs, multis, action, display.

Finding a Forte 7 in a store is like looking for a unicorn. Only way to play one is to buy one and this is something that checks all the boxes to break my red stack except for the weight.

I skipped Red altogether and went right from Silver to Black. (Korg Z1 replaced by Kurzweil PC3).

Although in the past I have gone from Black to Silver (and back again)...

Agreed, black can be a terrible color for us 50+ year old farts with diminishing 20/20 vision, so I keep some of those "sticky lamps" handy that can be placed underneath the upper board, so I can see what I'm doing on the lower board.

I've been reading up on how to install Scarbee Rhodes/Wurly/Clav or Sampletekk pianos into the 3.4GB available Flash RAM. If you couple that with some of Dave Weiser's sound programs and effects you pretty much have a Nord Electro 5HP killer just for the electro mechanical vintage instruments alone.

That sounds like it would be ridiculous quality.

People can find a nice Upright I created based on PD samples. Free of course.

http://www.purgatorycreek.com/page-2/page-4/page3.html

Also free guitars based on a licensing arrangement I have with Jensen.

http://www.purgatorycreek.com/page-2/page-4/page3.html

And my Forte collection (Rhodes, 200a, 140a, CP70, D6, Pianet N), reasonably priced.

http://www.purgatorycreek.com/page-2/page-3/index.html

It's a crime to leave that 3.3GB of user sample area unused. Great instrument.

Busch.

I've been quite happy with this board for gigs for many years now. I have to say, I really hated it when it was red.

That black Nord looks cool, but I hate black buttons on a black background. On a poorly lit stage, it becomes an unnecessary impediment.

Hey Clav, looks great. Is that painted or is it contact paper?
Mine is contact paper. HATE the red as well.

Will also be interested to hear your thoughts on the Forte vs the Red Devil.

Thanks! I painted mine. I had been wanting to do it for a long time, and then over the course of a weekend I did one or two coats of primer, and then two coats of black. I remember sitting on the deck sanding the side blocks for quite a while then painted them.

The first time I took it to a gig there was a guy with a black contact paper one. It was his first time out as well and we were both shocked that we weren't the only ones with black. Especially after playing the festival circuit for a couple years and constantly being in a sea of red keyboards.

I think that if I had heard of the contact paper before I might have tried it, but I'm happy with the paint.

I am also about to make it an Electro 74 (maybe a 76, but I doubt it). As a Rhodes and CP player, I don't like that it doesn't have the low "E".

I've never had any problems - the control panel is still intact so it's exactly the same as playing a stock one.

The F to F thing is horrendous, obviously not a dealbreaker, but horrendous nonetheless. What were they thinking??? It's a Rock & Roll keyboard. The key of E is key. I'd rather they chopped off a few note on top and made it C to C.

Yeah, not a deal breaker but unacceptable. It isn't a Clavia issue though, it's Fatar. The really annoying thing is that it is a 76 note keybed, and the contacts are active, but Fatar grinded off the upstop. I am about to gather some dimensions and 3D print some upstops though. Then it will be easy to add a low E.
