I am with J. Dan on this one. I play rhythm guitar. It stinks to take and setup two rigs but it has made me more marketable over the years.

What does a keyboard player do doing an all-guitar song?

Anything he damn well pleases.

As above, it depends on the song and my mood. There's always something to add.

Since our band has 2 guitar players, I often switch to a good guitar setting and act like a 3rd guitar most of the songs from groups who have 3 guitars, then switching off on breaks to a little organ, piano or elect piano sound, whichever seems most appropriate.

Usually on Eagles, CCR, etc. Best improvement/fuller sound in our band are on Hotel California live version or Wanted Dead or Alive, where it's easier for me to play the signature parts along with the lead guitar, and let the rhythm guitar just do something else.

I think of some of the Clavinet playing on NRBQ records - sounds like great rhythm guitar playing.

I knew a keyboard player who did that. I usually play a pad, piano, organ, ect... I finally wrote a killer guitar patch on my keyboard to play rhythm. It is so fun and sounds good in the mix. You could take a coffee break.

Sorry, alcohol and I do not get along when gigging. Just to be clear, I'm a HUGE alcohol fan, just not when playing. I do all sorts of tight percussive parts, and any amount of booze throws me off. After the gig, all bets are off.

Of course, when the gig sucks, and there's nothing else to do, I'm right there.

Grinding organ voices. One of my main long time gigs I'm also the other guitarist so that's solved there. I can make the song sound good either way, but I'm not laying out.

Lots of useable ideas here. I've done most everything that has already been suggested, except drink, dance, or leave the stage. I'm not reluctant to create space by not playing anything at all for a period of time (something that I wish more players would do), but I usually just try to contribute or create something that makes a song sound better or even takes a song to a new place. (Clearly, I have a gig that allows me some freedom to be a creator, rather than a replicator.)

Three Words: Add some Mellotron! Works most of the time... especially for Led Zep covers.

This too. I accidentally had to do this at one point when the schedule for the set was messed up; I went up on the stage with the pianist, only to find out that this song was not printed in the order of songs! Turned out, it was a guest singer facepalm , so I had to play with the volume off.

Have temporary tattoos made of the band's logo. Find attractive women to apply them to, especially if they are wearing low cut tops and will let you apply them (in)appropriately. Take a picture and then ask them to friend you on FB so you can tag them.

By then they should be on to the next song.

4. If you make it this far, issue backstage pass.

OR

5. Skip the next song too.

Depends on the song. I used to use 888000000 with any amount of overdrive (again, depending on the song), slightly overdriven Rhodes or Wurli, or even just an acoustic piano patch. I don't do this any longer, since I'm now the bassist.

I think if you are doing this often, I agree with the "find a different band" option.

- If they are a set starter, I might stay off stage and get a listen to how things sound out front. I do this for Eruption on the rare occasion we play it and join in for You Really Got Me.

- If my guitar skills improve, I'm hoping to join in the fun!

- Almost all of the time, organ EP and/or piano fit into guitar oriented classic rock, b3 especially. Not always though...Dirty Deeds I don't think any keyboard is going to fit into (we've had this discussion before, some disagreed!)...thankfully we've dropped it at this point. I just picked a synth bass patch, turned it way down and pretended to play basically...the show must go on yada yada but not my cup of tea to pretend to play music....

While my party band plays Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll", I just go to the front of the stage and play tambourine.

The piano is noticeable towards the end of the track. Outside of that, there isn't much piano going on. It's more of a judgement call. "Do I get back to my rig to play the "piano" part.. or do I continue to play tambourine at the front of the stage". I started playing piano on it, but found it way too guitar-y and the drums way too loud.. makes playing the piano part less enjoyable. And to be honest, I really don't think anyone misses the piano smile

A lot of times I play over-driven organ. Like on Good Times Bad Times, or Cinnamon Girl or White Room.

Sorry about that, Allan!
