Hi everybody !
I am working on a project of iPad/Music for Bands and I would need to know:

- how many music groups there are in the world?
By music groups I mean: Orchestras, jazz bands, ensembles, pop music bands - professional and non professional
where are the located ?

- What percentage of them use iPads for music ?

- all the survey about musicians

Do you have links, websites or reports to recommend ?
Many many thanks you will help me a lot!!!!!!! grin

Good luck answering that first question. Bands assemble and break up every minute of every day.

Or the percentage question. Who knows.

I think the OP needs better questions.

There are almost 320 million people in the US. According the the Occupational Outlook Handbook (http://www.bls.gov/ooh) there were over 167,000 musician jobs in 2012. That could serve as an estimate to the number of professional musicians in the US. Therefore, about 0.05% of the US population are professional musicians.

There are over 7 billion people on the planet. Assuming the same percentage of professional musicians in the US are worldwide means there are 3.5 million of them.

Now, some music "groups" are just a single solo musician. Other groups like symphony orchestras can have over 100 members. Also, some musicians may be in more than one group. So it's hard to determine exactly how many music groups there are based on the number of musicians.

On the low end, assuming every musician is in exactly one 100-piece symphony orchestra means there are 350,000 professional music groups in the world. On the high end, I can't imagine being in more than 4 groups at any one time myself, so maybe 14 million. Therefore I estimate the number of professional music groups in the world to range from 350,000 to 14 million.

What about non-professionals?

Well, let's assume the ratio of non-professional to professional musicians is similar to that for athletes. According to ncaa.org, between 0.03% and and 0.5% of high school athletes "go pro", depending on the sport. If you ignore baseball (0.5%), the range is 0.03-0.09% and the average is 0.06%. So an estimate (based on 0.06%) for the number of non-professional music groups in the world would be 580 million to 5.8 billion. (Here I assume the non-professional musician isn't going to be in more than one group.) Could it be there are almost as many music groups as there are people?!

Even with the low-end, conservative estimates, though, that's an awful lot of music groups: 350,000 professional and 580 million non-professional.

Your guess is as good as mine.

I would think most iPads would be found in developed countries. About one billion people live in developed countries (1/7th of 7 billion total).

Based solely on my own experience, none of the non-professional bands I've been in used an iPad. Of the 10 or so professional bands I've been in I'd say 3 of them used an iPad at one time or another.

So, using the conservative estimates above and my anecdotal evidence, I'd say 15,000 music groups use iPads. That's 30% of of the 50,000 pro groups in developed countries (1/7th of 350,000). Of the 580 million total music groups worldwide, 15,000 is 0.003%.

In other words, about 3 out of every 100,000 music groups use an iPad.

It's still a wild shot in the dark. There are too many assumptions for it to be accurate.
