It's been a week since Super Bowl LI, and it's time to start a new NFL football thread.

Here are this weekend's top stories:

Destination Romo: All the places Tony could go

Is buzz surrounding Bears and Jimmy Garoppolo real?

Raiders President Marc Badain says financing for Las Vegas stadium won't be an issue

Best,

Geoff

Well, regardless where the Raiders end up playing football in the future, they have locked up HC Jack Del Rio with a new four (4) year contract. cool

ProfD- should the Skins sign Kirk Cousins to a multi year deal? It's an interesting situation there.

Geoff, Garoppolo is another interesting story. Brady hasn't shown a breakdown in skills, so the window is closing on this guy, fast. But how good is he? How much will a team risk? Houston paid big bucks for Osweiler, so teams will or should be hesitant. I'd take the gamble, more than I would on Romo.

Yes I do. thu

If Philip Rivers became available I might feel differently. laugh

Seriously, the QB market is not that great.

While Cousins makes mistakes at the worst time, IMO, poor coaching decisions have put him in some of those situations.

Cousins has proven to be a solid QB. I believe he'll be even better with a sense of job security and more experience under his belt.

I'll give my 2 cents to the question posed to Geoff...

I think teams should learn from that Osweiler deal. It does not make sense to throw a bag of gold at an unproven backup QB.

A few years ago, Seattle picked up Flynn for less money than Brock got but Flynn was beat out in training camp by their current all-Pro, SB champion, starting QB.

Neither Matt Cassel nor Ryan Mallett has set the NFL on fire after leaving New England. Garrapolo might be good but we haven't seen enough of him yet.

Unless a team is desperate at QB and/or has a tremendous offensive line, it doesn't make sense to throw money at Romo either. I believe he only has 1 or 2 years of football left in his tank. cool

Agreed. Cousins is very good, not great, but right now there isn't a better option. What should they do, trade him for a few draft picks and start Colt McCoy? I think not.

ProfD made a very strong case against overspending on a backup quarterback. CEB seems to have a lot of faith in Garoppolo. I'll be interested in his opinion as well.

As for me, I haven't seen enough yet to say whether Garoppolo's the answer; but I've seen enough of Jay Cutler—both on the Broncos and Bears—to understand why the Bears might think he's a problem that needs solving. I agree that Garoppolo's probably a better gamble than Romo at this point. Romo's probably a better fit for a team that has peaked and only needs an experienced, high-calibre quarterback to take them the rest of the way—like Peyton Manning did with the Broncos.

It'll be fun to watch it all play out.

Best,

Geoff

What do these guys all have in common? They were all acquired by the Houston Texans to be the starter after being a backup QB somewhere else. facepalm

Bless their hearts, they are trying to find a diamond in the rough, but jeez, this has gotten the Texans nowhere for a while now. They can only hope the offensive coaching changes they've made will work for Brock, but I'm not holding my breath.

I believe the Skins used their franchise tag on Cousins last season. So, I think they have to make a deal or let him walk. I'm not sure they're in a position to get anything in trade.

If the Skins do not keep Cousins, they end up on this type of QB carousel. The diamond in the rough is a college kid. That's a 2-3 year development program.

IMO, McCoy is s decent backup QB but not a long-term solution. The Skins have to keep Cousins or bring in a veteran like Cutler, Romo or Kaepernick. sick laugh cool

He had better be - otherwise they have even less at QB than they did. And no, I don't want Smokin' Jay Cutler.

Rats:

T.J. Lang signs three-year deal with Lions

Oh well, I'm happy for Lang to get to return to his home state of Michigan to play for the team he probably rooted for as a child. I hope the Packers can find suitable linemen. Lang is the second starter they've lost during this offseason. (Center JC Tretter was the first.)

This was a good sign. Bennett was good on the Giants, not utilized well on the Bears, and had some bright moments on the Pats. I think Rodgers will like having this big target in the end zone.

Sad but true. Ware reportedly turned down $9 million to retire.

I hope you're right about Bennett, antimatter.

In the meantime, the Packers have some big holes to fill:

Eddie Lacy is Seahawks' latest gamble to replace Marshawn Lynch

Julius Peppers: Set to rejoin Carolina

Well, the Skins fire the GM and lose Garcon and D-Jax to free agency. They must be counting on the young WRs (Crowder, Grant and Doctson) and addition of Pryor to help Cousins. cool

Raiders have added Cordarelle Patterson and Jared Cook. I can live with that. Wouldn't mind seeing another RB, either in the draft or via free agency.

Vikings got Latavuis Murray. I'm okay with that, too...

Eagles with Alshon Jeffery on one side and Torrey Smith on the other. Also interesting. Sure, Smith is a one trick pony (the long ball), but it's a gooooood trick.

Speaking of the Raiders...

Owners vote 31-1 to OK Raiders move; Dolphins vote against

The Raiders will still play in Oakland in 2017, and possibly longer.

I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed. I doubt it's a good idea to plant a team into the capitol of organized gambling.

What you need to know about NFL's new rules for 2017

No more leaping over the line of scrimmage to block extra point attempts or field goal attempts, for one thing.

Makes sense. Peterson and Brees will make a great backfield, and both are running out of time. I'm not surprised that no team was willing to pay AP the money Minnesota would have owed, but I am surprised at how little he's going to make now.

I'm just glad the Packers won't have to face him at least twice a year for the next two years.

Best,

They helped the Packers too by giving them an extra fourth round pick simply to move back four spots (picking 33 instead of 29).

A QB frenzy. It will be interesting to see who got it right. Houston played so well against the Pats last year in the playoffs, defensively anyway, maybe Watson pushes them over the edge? Kansas City is a now team, I can't help but feel Alex Smith is a good goat- insert Mahommes.

Chicago is bewildering if what I heard was true, that John Fox wasn't aware of the potential trade up until 2 hours before the draft. That would never happen in say oh NE. But again just a rumor.

well, even Business Insider has something to say about it

John Fox reportedly learned about the Bears' plan to trade up for Mitchell Trubisky

The Packers focused on much-needed alliteration in the second round, picking Kevin King (CB, Washington) and Josh Jones (S, NC State).

Oh, and they'll probably help improve Green Bay's pass defense as well.

Best,

Geoff

Really, picks from space, animals? It's nuts. I love football, but too long to be blinded at the insane commercialism that has infected every aspect of the game. Yes, the draft has a "winning the lottery" effect for a bunch of young men and their families; good for them. But geez does the NFL have to capitalize it like this? It's bittersweet. I enjoy it and loathe it. facepalm

This story broke a couple of days ago. Jay Cutler is following Tony Romo into the broadcast booth:

Ex-Bears QB Jay Cutler has deal to do TV for Fox

As Fox covers the NFC, there's a real likelihood that Cutler will be in the booth for Bears games and former NFC North rivals.

Best,

Geoff

Ok, so now players can do touchdown group celebrations and use the football as a prop.

I have many reactions to this: facepalm idk cop w00t crazy

Unfortunately endorsements will feed it. Many will practice their celebrations more than plays the team runs. I hope it's fun, but I see train wrecks- especially when my Giants have OBJ and Brandon Marshall. Maybe TO can get a celebration choreography gig. It will be entertaining.

Houston paid big bucks for Osweiler, so teams will or should be hesitant. I'd take the gamble, more than I would on Romo.

I think the Pats would be nuts to let Garoppolo go. Brady is a remarkable physical specimen for sure, but dude is getting ready to be 40, and a lot of times guys that cruise along great in their later years suffer a drastically fast erosion of skills at some point. You know at his age that's going to come sooner than later, Father Time being undefeated and all. Besides, Chicago is a place where quarterbacks go to die.....

The Packers are lucky to be down 0-3 at the half to the Seahawks. Green Bay's offense has been outplayed by Seattle's defense so far; but luckily, the Packers' defense rose to the challenge, shutting down the Seahawks' offense for all but the last 20 seconds of the half.

Here's hoping the Pack comes back in the second half.

Green Bay played well enough in the second half that I think they probably would have won the game without the benefit of the bad calls that went against Seattle, but there's no way to know. Too bad the officiating was so bad.

The Seahawks defense is one of the best in the league. They've got a great season ahead.

My condolences to Seattle fans on today's officiating and loss.

Best,

Geoff

I just finished watching my recording of the Rams/Colts game. Wow! Two pick sixes and a safety from the defense and the best offensive performance of the Goff era make me think this team could end the season in second place. LA's defense looked VERY good—not as good as the Seahawks defense—but top ten at least.

Granted, they faced a Luckless, somewhat decimated Indianapolis squad; but last year's Rams would have struggled to win this game. This year's Rams showed serious potential in their 46-9 win.

And they start the season alone in first place!

Best,

Geoff

The Yankees scored 16 points today.

No, I don't have the wrong thread. As ESPN pointed out, that's one more point than the Jets (12) and Giants (3) combined for today. It's not often when a city's baseball team outscores both of its NFL teams.

Jaguars spanked Texans 29 to 7, but it really wasn't that close.
Jags had 10, yes that's right 10 sacks on two different Texan quarterbacks. If the pocket had collapsed any faster, I think it might have started nuclear fission. Even if they get Duane Brown back on the offensive line, he is not going to make THAT much difference.

Hopefully some of it is just Hurricane hangover, injuries, and the fact it looks like Jacksonville may be pretty darn good this year.

I think most of it was due to the hurricane. Remember the Saints finished 3-13 the year of Katrina, being forced to play all of their home games away from their home stadium. It was their worst record since 1999. The following year, they returned to the Superdome, went 10-6, and played in the NFC Championship game for the first time in franchise history.

Best,

Geoff

Yeah. Giants defensively are in the mix, but the O-line is lacking. The guy with the cool hair can only do so much when he returns.

I thought the Seattle-Green Bay game was pretty special for week 1. The NFC is going to be a tough fight.

Ok, the AFC won't be a pushover either - looking forward to seeing Raiders/Chiefs.. and oh my will Belichick be running the Pats ragged in practices this week.

The Packers travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons next week in a replay of last season's NFC Championship game. On the heels of their contest against the Seahawks, that's tough indeed!

Best,

Geoff

Unless Brandon Marshall or Sterling Shepard step up, I agree - ODB will almost certainly be headed for a decent amount of double coverage regardless.

What do you guys view as the biggest surprise of week one, that the Patriots lost their home opener, that the Rams are in sole possession of first place, or that the Bills are in sole possession of first place?

Best,

Deshaun Watson's first start is a success. His 49-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter tonight was the longest ever by a quarterback in his first NFL start. Happy birthday, Deshaun!

In the meantime, the Bengals have yet to score their first touchdown of the season.

Best,

Geoff

Well, I'm still watching; but that last game was just painful to watch. The Falcons not only beat the Packers, they beat them up. Five starters injured, including Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Here's hoping Green Bay can remedy that by the end of the season, or they won't get past the NFC Championship Game again (presuming they're lucky enough to get that far).

But today's win by the Broncos was a thing of beauty! They dominated on both sides of the ball against a strong Cowboys team. Who would have thought Trevor Siemian could look better than Dak Prescott?

As for the Rams, despite today's loss, I still think they're coming along nicely. They were tied at the 2-minute warning; and if Los Angeles hadn't committed so many penalties, they might have been ahead at that point. Goff was on target with most of his passing, but he's still telegraphing his moves too often. Nonetheless, the Rams are on the right track and a far cry better than last year. Congrats to ProfD on Washington's win.

Best,

Geoff

I realize the Giants started 0-2 in 2007 and still managed to beat the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl, but I'm not sure this edition has it in them. Then again, maybe the Lions are that good. I guess we'll see how they handle themselves against the Falcons next week...

Too bad for the Packers. Congrats on the Broncos win especially beating an enemy team. grin

I am grateful for the SKins' win. But, I hope they commit to running the football. It sets up everything else and controls the clock.

The defense looks a little better than last year. They still allow teams to march downfield and score. I do not subscribe to the bend but don't break mentality either. We should be more aggressive.

Otherwise, I'm just glad football season is back. I'm having a blast watching the games and playing FF and Pick 'Em. cool

Not looking good. Poor Erik Flowers, kid gets beat with almost every move. Seattle has a bad line too, but at least Russell Wilson can scramble around. Eli is pure pocket passer. Giants plan was to keep the O-line they had last year and assume they'd improve. They didn't. Now the big change is going to be... (gasp), Bob McAdoo giving up play calling, maybe. facepalm

Next Sunday against the Eagles is a must win. Maybe they keep Brandon Marshall in to help Flowers.

While the Giants are still dead last in offensive rushing, and Flowers can't block, against the Lions Eli really looked slow and inadequate in avoiding the rush.

What a shootout between the Rams and 49ers! I'm glad LA managed to win (41-39).

One piece of trivia: this is the second highest point total through the first three games in Rams' franchise history (next to the "Greatest Show on Turf" edition). Yeah, I'd say the Rams have improved. thu

(Although, perhaps their defense hasn't yet improved, as much as I hate to say it—as I like Wade Phillips A LOT more than *shudder* Gregg Williams. The 49ers offense hadn't scored a touchdown yet this season prior to tonight's game. They scored five tonight.)

Best,

Geoff

LOL! Yeah, the "On Any Given Sunday" rule is in full effect today: Jacksonville bashes Baltimore, Buffalo beats Denver—by ten points, Chicago beats Pittsburg, New England narrowly beats Houston, Minnesota has to field backup QB Case Keenum and still handily beats Tampa Bay, and the rebuilding Jets crush the Dolphins—and those are just the morning games!

Best,

Geoff

Yes!!!

Aaron Rodgers gets his first overtime win as Green Bay beats Cincinnati 27-24 at home.

The Packers were a touchdown shy of covering the spread though, so they can be added to the "On Any Given Sunday" theme that prevailed today.

Best,

Geoff

Some pivotal games today: The Bills handed the Falcons their first defeat of the season in Atlanta to regain sole possession of first place in the AFC East as the Patriots lost at home to the Panthers, who are now tied with the Falcons for first place in the NFC South.

In the meantime, the 3-0 Chiefs are the only undefeated team remaining in the NFL, and they face what may be the best team in the NFC East—Washington—tomorrow night.

It sure was fun to watch the Rams come back to beat the Cowboys today! Los Angeles currently has the top ranked offense in the NFL. thu

Dave, my condolences on Derek Carr's injury. I hope it turns out to be a minor one.

Meanwhile in the basement of the AFC West, the Chargers lost yet another close one today. They're 0-4, but they're three close losses away from being 3-1.

That was a great, competitive game! With score at 20-20 with just eight seconds left, it was remarkable to see Kansas City score nine points in the time remaining. Those of us who went with the Chiefs in the Pick'em Pool are breathing a sigh of relief.

Kansas City remains the only undefeated team in the NFL, but Washington played them tough. That game could have easily gone either way.

Aikman was right. The Cowboys left the Packers too much time when they scored with 1:11 remaining. Even so, I breathed a sigh of relief when it was finally over. Great game by Dallas today.

Yikes. Can't say I've ever seen a WR corps for a single team get so badly hit so fast.

For the Giants' WR corps, and the Texans D on the same weekend with both Watt and Mercilus out for the season (and Cushing still on suspension). Like Al or Cris said Sunday night, just when the Texans get their offense together...

The closest I can think of is in college a couple of seasons ago when two Terp receivers broke their legs similarly in the same game.

All you fans of playoff and Super Bowl contenders griping about how your seasons are "done". After only week 5. I'd bet not.
I'll see your First World/NFL elite team problems and raise them with my beloved Cleveland Browns. I just want to see us win a game. Or catch a ball. Or make a field goal. Or....

Sure, it's technically possible that an 0-5 team that's decimated by season-ending injuries to some of its best players could win out, make the playoffs, and win the Super Bowl; but does a single one of us here think it will happen?

Nonetheless, it's just one season; and the Giants could eventually benefit from the draft choices they'll get as a result of this year. On the other hand, Cleveland has seemed to be the most hopeless team in the league for a long time—regardless of draft picks. You have my sympathy, kpl1228.

That said, at least the Browns have a storied past to be proud of. That's more than can be said for the Saints and the Buccaneers awful teams of old before they finally cured their losing ways. And just like those franchises, the Browns will eventually leave the cellar and even probably win a championship again. In the meantime, Cleveland has the success of the Cavaliers and Indians to enjoy.

(And for that matter, New York has the revived Yankees to enjoy. Game Five of their ALDS should be exciting.)

Best,

Geoff

Correct, Geoff. Reality and mathematical probabilities are far apart in this particular situation.

Deshaun Watson already rising up Texans' career passing charts

Quote:
Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson has started just four games in his career, and he already ranks seventh on the franchise's all-time passing touchdowns list.

Granted, the Texans only are in their 16th year of existence, but the team has used 15 different starters at quarterback.

As soon as Watson entered the game as a starter, he was tied with Tom Savage and Dave Ragone as Texans starting quarterbacks without a touchdown pass. Of course, it didn't take him long to rocket past them, and the likes of Matt Leinart, Brandon Weeden, Ryan Mallett, Tony Banks and T.J. Yates.

With his five touchdown passes in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs, he moved past Case Keenum - who played in 10 games with the Texans - with 12 career touchdowns in five games.

He could surpass Brock Osweiler's 15-touchdown effort from a year ago with one more good game and eventually settle in at No. 3 all-time after his rookie season.

He also already ranks fourth all-time on the franchise's list of rushing yards for a quarterback. Watson has rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Only David Carr (1,235 and 8 TDs), Matt Schaub (229 and 4 TDs) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (184 and 2 TDs) have done better.

It's a pity their great defense is decimated just when they finally get a talented quarterback.

But when the Texans' defense is healed, watch out!

Maybe because they got to play first this week? wink

(The Packers could join them at 5-1 on Sunday.)

Whether Green Bay matches the Eagles' record or not, Philadelphia looked great against the third team that ended last week at 4-1. Congrats on Philly's win tonight, Dave. cool

The Bears suck. Again. But their rookie QB, whom I'm glad they are playing in place of Glennon, looks promising, while of course making green rookie mistakes.

At least the Bears beat the Ravens. With injuries plaguing the Packers and Vikings and the Lions allowing 52 points yesterday, I wouldn't write off the Bears just yet. They're only two games out of first with 10 games left to go.

The media is in typical overdrive in reaction to Aaron Rodgers's injury. They're saying Rodgers is the best quarterback in the history of the game and it spells disaster for the Packers to lose him—especially considering how decimated the rest of the team already is.

Granted, the rest of the team is decimated and Aaron Rodgers is a great quarterback; but as a fan of both Rodgers and Brett Favre, I'm reminded that it is possible for a great quarterback to follow another great quarterback. Dak Prescott did a great job taking over for Tony Romo last year as well.

Most media pundits acknowledge—and then quickly dismiss—how well Brett Hundley performed during the preseason; and of course, preseason isn't much of an indicator of the season ahead, but it does show us at least that Hundley knows the Packers' system.

Patience is the only way to see what we have in Brett Hundley as a quarterback. I'm rooting for Brett and content to see how it plays out. In fact, I feel something of a common bond with Brett in that he grew up next door to the town where I spent the bulk of my childhood, he spent his college years in the community where I spent most of my adult life, and he's playing professionally in the state where I lived during my favorite year of my childhood.

Well, at least the Packers led the Saints for over half of the game. It's going to be a tough road ahead without Rodgers and an overall decimated team, but there's still reason for hope.

The Rams on the other hand are full speed ahead routing the Cardinals 33-0, even though Arizona looked reenergized last week after the addition of Adrian Peterson.

Thx!

That was unreal. I was at AES, almost asleep about halfway through the 4th quarter when I was pleasantly reminded of how much I hate watching sports on the East Coast. I was up until well after 2...

Under the circimstances, I don't mind. Never seen an ending like that.

Sorry about Rodgers...but yeah - how 'bout dem Rams?

My focus has been on the World Series (Go Dodger Blue!)—especially with the Packers and Rams on a bye—so I missed all the activity. Thanks for pointing it out, antimatter!

The Jimmy Garoppolo to 49ers trade is especially surprising as he looked to be the heir apparent in New England.

All the Jimmy Garoppolo trade dominoes, and who's affected

Maybe Dave will weigh in on the Jay Ajayi trade.

Dolphins trade RB Jay Ajayi to Eagles for fourth-round pick

I wonder what else will happen before the deadline this afternoon.

The Texans are pretty decimated at this point. Combining Deshaun's injury with the losses of the key defensive players, they seem back to little hope for a deep run. IIRC, Savage wasn't throwing much to Hopkins for some reason, so if I'm right about that, it's almost like he's not there, either.

The Rams/Giants and Broncos/Eagles games are following almost the same blueprints today, except my second favorite team is on the winning end in the first contest and my third favorite is on the losing end of the second.

I wonder whether we'll see a Rams/Eagles NFC Championship game this year...

No doubt. And of course the injury factor—which has run especially rampant this year—could even further alter the playoff picture.

That said, a Rams/Eagles NFC Championship game is something I never would have considered before the season began; and yet it doesn't seem far-fetched at all now.

Seahawks CB Richard Sherman out for season after rupturing Achilles

We've lost arguably the best quarterback in the league, the probable rookie of the year, the best receiver, and the best defensive players. Can anyone here remember a season like this?

I really enjoy watching football, but it's weighing harder and harder on me. What would this guy have been like without the CTE?

Aaron Hernandez suffered from most severe CTE ever found in a person his age

Closer to home, we recently lost a friend who was in his early 50s. The last few years, he started drinking heavily and basically ended up with some form of dementia and spent the last couple of years in an assisted living facility. Before he went in they took him in for an MRI. The tech thought he was over 80. At his memorial service, we found out he played football as a kid. He was an intelligent guy with a law degree, but he was always a bit goofy. I think it was the football playing. frown

I share your reaction, Joe. As for the injuries that have ended the seasons so many players this year, it's easy—and truthful—to say that they knew what they were getting themselves into. But with CTE, that's not the case.

With the NBA season beginning early this year and the MBL postseason extending, as usual, well into the NFL season, we were recently given an opportunity to compare and contrast all three sports at once. As I watched the World Series, I was struck by how rarely games are stopped to address an injury in baseball, because there are so few!

In contrast, it's rare to have any football game go by without some sort of damage. And despite safety precautions, the injuries only seem to be increasing. As for CTE, it's much harder to gauge the results of the precautions that are now being taken; but even if the incidents are being reduced, I can't imagine that the risk is being eliminated.

I think we're going to see dramatic changes to the sport of football in coming years; or barring that, I think the popularity of the game will decline—perhaps steeply. As for now, watching the sport has become a more guilty pleasure.

Considering how much participation in NFL threads has declined at this site, perhaps others here are sharing the same concerns.

Best,

Geoff

Bob Costas on the future of football: 'This game destroys people's brains'

Quote:
Speaking at a roundtable discussion at the University of Maryland, Costas, who hosted Football Night in America on NBC for more than a decade, said the sport could collapse over time, barring a development in technology to make it reasonably safe. He said the decline of football, which was once “a cash machine,” is the most significant story in American sports.

“The cracks in the foundation are there,” Costas said. “The day-to-day issues, as serious as they may be, they may come and go. But you cannot change the nature of the game. I certainly would not let, if I had an athletically gifted 12- or 13-year-old son, I would not let him play football.”

I imagine this is one reason interest and participation is down. Another are the injuries you mention. If Aaron Rodgers or JJ Watt are your favorite player, or Deshaun Watson caught your eye, your season is over.

Another reason is probably political and we won't get into that here, thankfully.

Then there's this, from the same article.

Quote:
Wilbon said football also lacks the international appeal of sports such as basketball and soccer, in part because it has sought to control its personalities.

"Football wants to distance itself and put a moat between itself and its fan base. It doesn't want to talk to them," Wilbon said. "'Well, Tom Brady's available on Tuesdays to talk.' Well, LeBron (James) is available every damn day. He's available every day on Instagram, on Twitter, on whatever it is. And it's not filtered."

That's been one of my beefs with the NFL. Remember the "Emmitt Smith Rule"? While in certain cases I could understand that, the whole thing where they seemed to want to prevent us from knowing who these guys are is stupid.

I was just psyched to go to a game with my son, and the Raiders tickets we usually get were stupidly expensive this year. Rams - not so much...and no plane flight!

I have Saints/Rams tix, too. 40 yard line. Again, not much money - a bit more than the other set.

Folks who choose to play American Football have always known the risk of injury is pretty high and sometimes severe.

Still, there are many boys and men who play anyway. I hope the one sport I love doesn't get even more watered down and/or becomes extinct.

Surely, I would play more Madden and/or find something else to watch in the place of football but it wouldnt be the same.

I'm all for making the game safer from a technological perspective but the rule changes and constant press on CTE seems like an assault on a man's game. cool

The Packers finally won one without Aaron Rodgers. Facing the Bears, it was one they should have won if Brett Hundley was to stand a chance of helping them reach the playoffs.

Looking ahead at their schedule, they ought to win at least three more before the end of the regular season. If they can do just one better than that, they might be able to squeak into a Wild Card slot by the time Rodgers recovers enough to play. (I'm presuming he might be well enough by January, but I realize there are no guarantees.)

Best,

Geoff

Well, all three of my favorite teams lost today; but I heard my music used in the Rams/Vikings game (as Fox went to commercial before the 4th quarter), so it was still a good day. smile

Skins fans definitely got the worst of it. mad

I'm surprised the head coach hasn't been fired yet.

The Eagles are clearly the best team in the NFC East and among top 5 in the NFL. cool

Speaking of the Patriots (and segueing to the Packers in the process), I'm really hoping Brett Hundley can mature fast enough to help Green Bay keep pace with New England for consecutive years in the playoffs. If either or both teams make it again this year, they will tie the all-time record of nine seasons in a row. More here:

Packers, Patriots can tie NFL consecutive playoff streak in 2017

I've just about given up on that hope though, as the 5-5 Packers are now 4-1 with Rodgers and 1-4 with Hundley so far this year.

At 8-2, on the other hand, things are looking pretty good for the Patriots.

Best,

Geoff

So, get this:

At the beginning of the season, I went looking for tickets to the Dallas/Oakland Sunday night game in mid-December. I wanted to go with my son - we love Oakland, and hate Dallas. Unfortunately, before the season started, that looked to be a reeeeally big game (not so much now, huh? rolleyes ) and the tickets were stupidly expensive. First time in more than a decade that Raiders tickets were expensive before the season started. Been real easy to get great tix for years....but all of a sudden, seats up at the top were $250+...each. On top of the travel. eek

So, I bought tickets to a couple of Rams games instead. I could get surprisingly good tix (then) for a ridiculous price, and didn't have to go to Oakland - we can actually take the Metro right down to USC pretty easily. $ saved, time saved - sounded like a good idea...

The first one was easy to pick because my home team - the Eagles - were scheduled to come to town in mid-December, so it also fit the criteria of when my son was home from school. smile

The second one was because a friend of mine and I couldn't believe we could land 45 yardline seats 50 rows up from the field for about the price of one of those Dallas/Raiders tix (through goldstar.com. Man, I love those guys!), so we randomly picked the best weekend for our schedules - this weekend - figuring the Saints would probably be relatively evenly matched with the Rams.
Both choices seem to have worked out well. twothumbs boing

Beautiful day for football here today as well!

"What a gut wrenching loss for the Packers"
- Al Michaels

That sums it up really well. A record tying field goal with four seconds remaining may have ended Green Bay's chance at a Wild Card berth this year.

I had little or no hope coming into tonight's game that the Packers could win this one without Aaron Rodgers, but Brett Hundley played really well, and the Packers defense forced three turnovers! Brett is developing into a very good backup and may yet become a starter for another team, once he becomes a free agent.

Green Bay would have to run the table at this point—like they did last year—to get into the playoffs; but as good as Hundley looked tonight, that outcome is next to impossible unless Rodgers returns in time to face the tough, final three opponents.

As a consolation, the Rams outplayed the Saints today. New Orleans was never really in the game. After last week's loss to the Vikings, it was great to see Los Angeles play so well against a tough opponent.

Best,

Geoff

NO barely managed to hang on for the ride. Rams looked good for sure...except Sammy Watkins. He's a few ticks short of where he needs to be, IMO.

A receiver catches the ball with two hands, then his knee hits the ground, and then after that his elbow hits the ground too, and he is still holding the ball. At some point later they see the ball move. Somehow the NFL officials decide this is not a catch. I'm talking about the Jets game here.

This concept of controlling the ball through the entire process or whatever the NFL calls it is ridiculous. It's as if they want the receiver to control the ball until they retire.

This one is for real, however:

Congrats to the Eagles. They have to be the pick of the litter in the NFC. It should be the Patriots again this year representing the AFC. My early pick would be the Eagles.

Eli Manning has represented the class of the organization ( or what was) since he got here. He is Giant royalty, and will forever be treated as such, by the fans. A few rival games remaining at home will bring out the worst in the stands. It will be ugly.

The Giants may have given up this season and decided to "protect" Eli from getting injured in a "meaningless" game and looking to rebuild around him next season. rolleyes

In the same way I do not believe in teams resting starters prior to the playoffs, I do not think it is fair to Eli or the Giants fans to throw in the towel on this season. Let Eli continue starting the games and developing a rapport with the players that may still be around next year.

If Eli is not in the Giants' future plans, it would be very interesting if he asks to be traded and decides to come to Washington. grin

Actually, with Coughlin there, Jacksonville would be a more likely destination if Eli is no longer wanted in NY. cool

Interesting perspective, ProfD. I hadn't looked at the Giants' choice to bench Eli as a strategy to rest him for next year. My thoughts were that they had decided he was washed up and wanted to see what their backups looked like in action before deciding how to draft.

I hope I'm wrong, and you're right.

Best,

Geoff

Eli is getting long in the tooth. Maybe he will retire.

I'd guess he has enough money.

Because he has played terribly this year (above and beyond the difficulties caused by a poor offensive line and team injuries).

Eli has been a classy representative of the Giants, and has been able to come up big when it mattered the most. But I think he's done.

Yep, Gronk totally lost it in that moment. The Pats clearly had the game under control. That pick was not going to change the outcome.

Eli Manning won today because he didn't have to risk injury under the soon to be fired McAdoo.

Eli will return in 2018 with a fresh bill of health and ready to play for another team. cool

Yeah, there's no excuse for Gronk's hit. I wonder whether there will be a punishment handed out next week.

It was nice to see the Packers win an old fashioned Battle of the Bays in overtime today. Now 6-6, there's still a glimmer of hope they can squeeze into a Wild Card spot.

In the meantime, tonight's victory of the Seahawks over the Eagles makes next week's Rams/Eagles contest all the more interesting. At stake will be the division lead in the NFC West for the Rams and the #1 seed spot in the NFC playoffs for the Eagles. Last but not least, our esteemed moderator will be there watching in the stands.

Best,

Geoff

Justice served. Eli gave a local interview today, he was choked up, great interview. He’s always been Huck Finn, a rambling “aw shucks” guy. Still is.
Maybe his best days are behind, but he’ll get some hero worship this Sunday at home. Well deserving. He has done it right. McAdoo didn’t get it. Maybe he does now. Bu bye

Monday Night Football. Steelers LB Ryan Shazier carted off field on a board-stretcher. Apparently he couldn't move his legs. Not good.
Steelers escaped with another 3 point win. I do believe that is the 4th game they won by a Field Goal. Baltimore is playing better these days and New England is on the schedule.

The Steelers aren't very good.

This season has been brutal in terms of injuries.

It is a bummer that strong contender for NFL MVP Wentz is one of the latest to go down.

On a lighter note, Nick Foles should definitely be available in our FF league. laughcool

Yes, it's got to be particularly tough for Wentz, especially with all the MVP talk about his play this year.

My condolences to Dave, who was there when the injury happened. Last year, the Raiders lost Derek Carr on the brink of the playoffs; and this year, the Eagles lost Carson Wentz the day they clinched their division. Frustrating for a fan.

At least Nick Foles should handle the duties better than most second string quarterbacks. The Eagles are better situated now than the Raiders were last season. Small consolation, however.

Best,

Geoff

I watched some of the highlights of last night's Patriots-Dolphin game. A couple of good defensive plays by Miami turned into interceptions. Without those picks, it could have been a different game.

What gets me is when I hear Sports on the tube featuring former players, some of whom are not "has beens", instead are "never was" saying Brady is playing like a 40 year old QB that is on his way down. I saw some of those throws, they were long and had plenty of velocity, but got picked off by great plays on Defense.

NE will have Gronk back next week and will beat Pittsburgh next week, as usual.

Eli Manning's yards per attempt (5.98) is second to last (out of 35) among NFL quarterbacks this year, among quarterbacks who have enough pass attempts to qualify. Manning fares better in overall quarterback rating (25th out of 35) because his TD-to-interception ratio (15/9) is not bad for a team faring as poorly as the Giants. I'm not saying I like Gino Smith, but Gino Smith's single game stats are indistinguishable from Manning's season stats. And the Giants would have fared better this year if the Jets' Josh McCown had been their quarterback instead of Manning. I've watched both of them play, and you can see it in their stats. McCown is having the type of season that Giants fans were hoping Manning would have this year.

I picked him up just for fun. Won't be starting him this week, and most likely won't be starting him next week. However with the enormous amount of injuries this season, only time will tell.

I just realized that going into this weekend, the Packers are tied for the longest winning streak in the NFC...

...with two wins in a row.

That's right, no one in the entire conference has won more than two of the last three games. That sort of stat encourages me to believe that if Aaron Rodgers's return leads Green Bay to win out, they might just grab a playoff birth after all. (Of course, I realize that's a pretty big if—especially with the Panthers, Vikings, and Lions remaining on the docket.)

Of course, the AFC has two teams with longer winning streaks: the Steelers (8) and the Chargers (4). Both teams face opponents that seem pretty evenly matched, so there should be some good games ahead over the next three days. cool

Best,

Geoff

Well, the Packers may have lost; but the Rams have the largest road lead (34-0) at the half in franchise history against the Seahawks; so today's okay so far.

I wonder which team steadyb is rooting for. In fact, I wonder how steadyb is doing these days. Maybe he'll drop in to post about football.

For those of you who watched the Patriots-Steelers game, you'll know why us Patriots fans keep loyal. It was fun watching the Gronk show again.

They can usually find a way to win. Even if they're not having their best day.

Tonight's victory by the Falcons eliminated the Packers from playoff contention. I hope McCarthy sends Rodgers back to recovering and lets Hundley finish out the season at QB. It would be good to let him continue to develop just in case he's needed again.

Now that Green Bay officially won't go to the postseason, New England will be the sole team with the longest playoff streak at nine seasons in a row. Congrats to Patriots fans.

This week, the two of the three teams with the longest winning streaks (three in a row) face each other. Neither of the teams in this contest would be expected by anyone but their biggest fans to share the longest winning streaks in the NFL. They are Jacksonville and San Francisco. Kudos to Tom Coughlin and Jimmy Garoppolo for turning their respective franchises around.

I just saw Steve Young say that the 49ers should build a team around Jimmy Garoppolo and that he's a guy who could take them from last to first.

He also said that the Jaguars defense could get them past the Patriots to win the AFC. That makes this weekend's matchup between the Niners and Jags all the more interesting to watch. Are these two Cinderella teams in the making?

Best,

Geoff

It would be great to see the Jaguars winning the AFC. They have been flying below the radar all season long.

Early in the season, the talking heads had written off the Jags' QB. Now, they will mention their defense and rookie RB. Still, they do not get the same amount of press as a team like the Pats.

The Jags could be a modern day version of the Ravens who won a Super Bowl with a great defense and a serviceable offense. cool

As a Steelers fan, getting an obvious TD taken away not only cost us the game, it could possibly cost us Home Field throughout the Playoffs.

That said, why didn't James stay on his feet and run into the End Zone instead of falling down and losing control of the ball? What were the Steelers doing when the call was being reviewed? They were not ready to resume play when the TD was ruled incomplete. Then Ben threw a bad pass into triple coverage that got intercepted. cry

The Steelers played the end of the game like amateurs and the Patriots walked out with yet another win in Pittsburgh. The Steelers had plenty of chances and crapped their pants.

Thanks, Dave, and congrats and condolences on the outcome of tonight's game between your two favorite teams.

The Eagles have home field advantage through the NFC Playoffs, and they did it at the expense of the Raiders. I'm guessing it was a pretty bittersweet outcome. freak

The Yahoo! FF league gave me a grade for my performance with my team this year. It's called the Season Story. Overall, it gave me a D-. But here's the kicker. It gave me an F for my draft. But we autodrafted this year!!! mad Stupid thing. I didn't draft these guys, you did, Yahoos!

(I'm not complaining about the decision to use autodraft this year. Just that their dopey evaluation algorithm didn't take that into account.)

Congrats to our winners, Flying Dog/David, and everyone else who did well in this year's FF! thu

Congrats from me to Dave & Dave! I really got into it on a couple of close battles. Enough to forget about real football going on...for a while sick.

I got a C on by brilliance during auto-draft and a B for my in-season management. Definitely a step up from last season. See you guys next year.

Of course, the entire NFC West has undergone major change with the Rams winning their first division title since 2003 and the 49ers having the best record in the league from the start of Jimmy Garoppolo through the end of the regular season.

Only the Seahawks look roughly the same going into 2018.

A kink in the Patriots Armor:

I'm guessing that all you football fans are aware of the Rift between Tom Brady and Hoody. There have been disagreements over the years, Brady has gotten tired of being railed after games for throwing interceptions in front of the whole team. The Brady's business partner and trainer was pitting other Patriot players against the team trainers that had Hoody's blessings.

The situation has gotten worse with Brady insisting he wants to play until his mid-forties and Hoody expecting Jimmy G to take Brady's place. With this Jimmy G going to be a Free Agent after this season, The Patriots had to either make him the Franchise Player to the tune of 25 million a year, or Trade him. Robert Kraft and Hoody had a long meeting and Hoody left the meeting with a "Directive" from Kraft that Btady stays and Jimmy G had to go. As of now, they don't have a good backup in case Brady goes down.

Here's a great article from ESPN with the entire story:

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/hot...-power-struggle

Interesting story coming out of Foxborough. I wonder how much of it is real versus fake news. laugh

Hoodie and Brady are inextricably linked whether they like it or not. IMO, neither would have playoff victories and Super Bowl rings without the other.

I remember Hoodie being head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Needless to type, they made one postseason appearance. They weren't all that great. He was fired.

The Patriots gave Hoodie a place to shine. Bledsoe got hurt. Brady stepped up to the plate. The rest is history.

I guess like any old and/or odd couple, there could eventually be rifts. In this case, I'm just not buying it. cool

There is no doubt there is trouble in Paradise. One of the reasons Hoody succeeds is because HE calls the shots in NE when it comes to Personnel decisions. Hoody is a dictator and EVERYONE, including Tom Brady, is replaceable.

Robert Kraft has meddled in Hoody's authority and Hoody had said that "once an Owner gets involved in making decisions about the team, its time to go" This is not fabricated and Brady-Kraft won this round.

Belichick failed in Cleveland because Cleveland owners don't know anything about football.

I thought ownership was to blame for their woes too but now I'm wondering if there is something in the air or water in Cleveland that only affects the turds, er, Browns. laugh

A record of 0-16 at a time when league parity is rather high seems like a curse.

The coaches and players get paid very well but still, it has to suck big time to lose every game. cool

Belichick never coached for these Cleveland Browns. The Browns left for Baltimore the season after Belichick finished. The team now called the Browns is an NFL sham the leaugue tries to portray as the historical franchise of Paul Brown. It isn't. It's a 99 expansion team ran by a someone who wants to do for Tennessee Volunteer Football what he's done for his horrible NFL franchise.

Historically, that is true but they won't link him to the franchise that became the Baltimore Ravens. His football bio is tied to that team in Ohio. laugh cool

Yeah, the so called Browns are run by a group of people that don't know Football. I don't remember their last GM's name, buy he was an accountant. An accountant can't pick players, that's obvious. Take a look at the players they picked and the ones they passed on. No, its not a perfect world, we cannot always pick winners, but the Browns organization has found a way to lose more games in two seasons than any other recent NFL team. Pathetic.

Having been a part of 4 Championships, they made the right call.

Okay, that’s a lie. I’ve never played. But didn’t they have to go for two to force a TD? The Kicker for the Chiefs is too good not to.

Great game.

Last year, the Falcons ended the Packers' playoff hopes in the NFC Championship game. This year, they ended the Rams' playoff hopes in the Wild Card round.

Oh well, I have every confidence the Rams are now solidly back in the contenders column; and the Packers should fare much better again next year with Rodgers back.

How about those Titans, though? I'd bet Meccajay is smiling right now. I hope he's doing well.

As for me, I'm on to rooting for my fourth favorite team. If they make it to the Super Bowl this year, I sure hope they finally win one.

GO VIKINGS!!! thu

Best,

Geoff

Case Keenum FTW!

If Case takes them all the way, that will be the second time in recent memory the Texans have been shown up by someone they let go. First was Gary Kubiak and his staff when they won with the Broncos. Meanwhile, the Texans... rolleyes

Maybe.

D was awesome. Made it look like ATL didn't show up. Reminds me of the year TB won...or the Ravens....

Seriously - arguably the only reason ATL got close enough to score their lone TD was because of a special teams screwup; otherwise, PHL's D was fairly solid. hand

FINALLY!!! Revenge for Jan 24, 2010! thu cool

That was one of the best game finishes I've ever seen!

I hope Brett Favre sleeps well tonight.

It wasn't as easy as it seemed like it would be when the Vikings were up 17-0 at the half. It looked like one of those cases of teams swapping uniforms at halftime, but a 24-12 deficit in the second half was good enough for a win.

Best,

Geoff

IMO, the Saints-Vikings was the most exciting of these playoffs. It was even better than the two (2) fourth (4th) down TDs the Steelers scored earlier today.

Of course, it is hard to count Drew Brees out of any game. He has what it takes to bring his team back. But, the Vikings kept fighting and pulled off a miracle play to extend their season.

The NFC championship game should be a good one. The AFC championship could be an interesting chess match between the Jags defense and Pats offense. I'm not convinced the Jags offense can consistently score points.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to both games. I'll be in front of the TV next Sunday just like I was today. thu cool

I was kinda rooting for the Saints so the Vikings fans on PFT would shut up, but it's probably better for the Eagles to face the Vikings than Brees and the Saints.

Saints rookie DB Williams had a great season. He covered the play to avoid a pass interference call that would have put the Vikings in better FG position.

Unfortunately, Williams' momentum kept him from being in position to make a form tackle on Diggs.

If he had played it differently, Williams would have tackled Diggs inbounds. The game would have been over as the Vikings wouldn't have had enough time to line up and kick a FG.

Tough break. That play will be a permanent part of NFL highlight reels. But, it also another example of football being a game of inches. cool

Yeah, that was weird considering last week the team owner stated Mularkey would be back next year.

Apparently, when they talked to Mularkey this morning, he didn't agree to fire some of his staff.

The Titans organization doesn't feel that the coaching staff had been successful in developing QB Mariota.

According to news reports, the leading candidate for the Titans head coaching job is Josh McDaniels.

Maybe the 2nd time around will yield good results because I remember his stint in Denver. I think McDaniels is a good offensive coordinator. But, it remains to be seen whether or not he can run the whole show.

I'm not convinced that Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will be a good head coach either.

I understand these guys are branches from the Parcells/Hoodie tree. We'll find out soon enough if they're ready to leave tbeir cocoons in New England. cool

Jacksonville controlled the ball on both sides of the line of scrimmage in the AFC Divisional round against the Steelers. It was 21-zip before all the Fans were in their seats. That team is mostly young players that are physical and fast. Pittsburgh's Defense couldn't stop the Jags. They had NO 3 and outs.

New England certainly has more to be concerned about than if hey had a rematch with the Steelers, who ALWAYS lost to Hoody. I'll be watching the Game and routing for the Jags.

An interesting stat to keep in mind is that Bill Belichick is 0-2 against Tom Coughlin in playoff games. Granted, Coughlin is the executive vice president of football operations in Jacksonville, not the head coach; but his influence on the team is important, nonetheless.

Wow: Philadelphia dominated on both sides of the ball! The Eagles' defense was no surprise, but few people predicted this performance from Nick Foles. Congrats, Dave, on the Eagles blowout win over the Vikings—your second favorite team is going to the Super Bowl! cool

Congrats, too, on your win of the Pick 'em Pool. Your worst-case scenario is that you end up tying with me, providing I pick the Super Bowl correctly against the spread and you don't. Otherwise you'll win it outright. Either way, you'll finish in first.

Best,

Well, not an avid follower of this thread.

But I've watched *every* game of the Brady era. Love seeing this guy play. He doesn't always come through in the clutch, but his batting average is amazing.

The guy has gone to the Superbowl in 50% of his seasons. Seriously.
GOAT, and the rest of the team has serious heart.

Sorry in advance to all you haters. Best of luck to the Eagles. Hoping for a great game, as was last year vs. the Falcons. Totally amazing. Heart-pounding action.

Not hoping for a blowout, because what's the fun in that? If we're lucky, the Pats will be down 35 points with 15 minutes to play, and find a way to come back smile

I'm not a hater, but—as a sports fan—I get tired of one team dominating for longer than a decade. (For reference, see older NBA threads where I complained about the decades long dominance of my second favorite team, the Lakers.)

I'll be happy when it's New England's time to return to the fold; but in the meantime, I'll settle for being happy for their fans. Congrats, Chuck. cool

Best,

Geoff

+1. I don't hate the Pats - just tired of them.

And as a fan of the NFC and someone who roots for teams who are overdue for a victory (when I don't have a horse in the race), you know who I'll be rooting for.

Congrats brotha dB on the Eagles scoring more than enough points to win today. laugh thu

The Vikings had a great season but they got run over today. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do with the QB position next year.

The Jags has a phenomenal season and held up well for 3 quarters of the AFC championship game. Add a few more playmakers to the roster and they will be back in the mix next year.

Love or hate them, the Pats never seem to be out of the game. Sure, they lose but it seems to be a way of challenging themselves.

While football is a team sport, Brady is definitely the GOAT when it comes to NFL field generals.

We still have one more football left. The Patriots-Eagles Super Bowl should be a fun game to watch. cool

Congrats dB. I saw the Pats are 5.5 Point favorites just now. A little high to me.
Foles is doing a great job. Very nice, smart signing by the Eagles. He’s probably not going to want to be a bench player after this. The Eagles have him under contract for another season, they could probably get a nice trade together once Wentz gets to be 100%.

Smith's deal of $94M over 5 years is more cap friendly. Even at the advanced age of 33, he's still capable of running an offense and grooming his heir apparent.

The Skins bought themselves about 3 years to draft a QB and shore up both sides of the ball.

It's a deal I can live with providing the Skins make smart moves throughout the draft and free agency. cool

I like Smith as a quarterback more than I like Cousins. I wish the Jets had acquired him instead of the Redskins. I suspect that the Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants also wish the Jets had acquired Smith instead of the Redskins.

I wouldn't mind at all to see Mr. Cousins go to Denver.

How cool is that?!? Congratulations to all of our Eagles fans and condolences to Patriots fans.

Congrats especially to Dave—first and foremost on the Eagles' victory, which I know is more important to you, but also for winning the Pick 'em Pool outright today. Well done, my friend!

Another great Super Bowl matchup; entertaining to the end. I like that the outcome could be boiled down to which quarterback was the best receiver.

Best,

Geoff

I'd be ok not live, but that wasn't my definition of music.

99.999% Gangsta choreography with high five activities from audience. Sad to watch and sadder to listen to.

Could be worse. I suffered thru J Lo's "concert" from last night that was broadcast. Dumber than JT. "Songs" that were ever so much worse. 10 minutes of some rapper screaming at the audience trying to get them to chant his name. Even the choreography was lame, and she's supposed to be a dancer. Ugh.

From a few days ago:

Doug Pederson has arranged to have Brett Favre speak to Eagles ahead of Super Bowl LII

I wonder if he did his version of, "Lafayette, we are here!"

After all, the Packers probably wouldn't have won Super Bowl XXXI against the Patriots without adding Eagles defensive end Reggie White to their roster; and the Eagles probably wouldn't have won Super Bowl LII against the Patriots today without Favre's former backup, Doug Pederson, at the helm.

Best,

Geoff

Tough crowd here on the Timberman. I don’t know any of his music per se but think he’s a solid performer for what he does. I did laugh that his “hit” he saved for the climax was a song from Trolls, which my daughter informed me. But man, the hatchets are out here ... a bunch of 50+ old guys aren’t into Justin Timberlake - news at 11!

"Can't Stop The Feeling!" is Trolls and much more - JT's greatest hit (so far anyway) and the top selling single of 2016 (Wikipedia). All I know is that as a DJ it's the one JT track that consistently fills the floor. People of all ages seem to love it.

Timberlake dropped his first solo album in five years last Friday, which is probably why he took his third Super Bowl gig. Lead single from the album (Filthy) was the first song in the nighclub setting under the stands - which I thought was the coolest part of the halftime show.

The rest - not so much, and the duet with Prince kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

It was a great piece of clock management that the Eagles made their final kickoff a little short, so the Pats could not kneel down, take a touchback, and start at their 25. This ended up costing the Patriots 15 yards and 7 seconds. Anyone want to imagine how the ending might have been different if the final kickoff was longer and created a touchback?

Foles went all Kurt Warner on the Pats. Iggles smacked Brady around enough to make him a bit more ordinary.

I'm not a JT demo and his music isn't my thing, but I think he's a great charismatic performer and clearly what he does is at the top of some game for some segment of the public. His show was exactly what i expected, except no Janet :), a lot of cool dance moves and transitions with some songs I don't know and wouldn't go and buy.

I liked the Prince thing. they didn't do it as well as they could have but it was a cool nod to Minn imo. no wrong-rub for me. Prince was the man - one of the top 5 talents in the last 40 yrs imo. Way over and above anything JT offered the art community imo.

Justin played the piano for you guys - he added that part segment to satisfy the KC reviewers.

Yeah congrats Dave. It's a great feeling when your team wins the big one smile I have a weakness for the underdog, and was happy when Philly pulled this one out too.

It was kinda cool that in an offensive shootout, probably the biggest play of the game came from the defense. And you can't help but feel good for Nick Foles. Going in I just hoped he wouldn't blow it, and he did so much more...

Biggest loose end to me was the benching of Malcolm Butler. Maybe an explanation will come out later this week.

For me, the biggest play was the 4th and goal call at the end of Q2. That took some serious stones. Made me way proud.

Yeah, no idea what was up with that. Would cetainly be interested to know the back story. idk

I don't feel too badly though - PHL spotted NE a starting QB and a Pro Bowl OT.

I woke up this morning thinking about that play. I loved it for its imagination and creativity as much as for its guts. It was not only the highlight of this Super Bowl, but one of the top highlights of all Super Bowls, IMHO.

I also love the storyline that a former backup quarterback coached a Super Bowl victory using his backup quarterback.

Best,

Geoff

It was great to see the "Philly Special". Out Trick the Trickster. Brady said they were never in control of the game. Their kicks weren't working and their Defense got beat. Butler was on the bench, but he wouldn't have made that much difference.

As a Steelers Fan, I have no love for Hoody, but from Sports Casters I have been watching since the game, it is possible that Hoody didn't want to throw Butler under the Bus and spell out why he benched him. Apparently Butler is immature, high maintenance, and went over the line one too many times.

Hold the phone....Josh McDaniels will not be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts next year.

Apparently, the Kraftster convinced him to stay with the Pats. Bumped up his salary too.

Now, I wonder if he's slated to take over reins whenever Hoodie hangs up his cut-off sweatshirt. cool

lifted from Business Insider. This really sucks

"According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, several assistant coaches had already been hired under the belief that they would be working under McDaniels. Several of those coaches had apparently already moved to Indianapolis and were already working with the team.

"The Colts' assistants you've seen reported (e.g. Matt Eberflus as DC) have signed contracts and have been in the team's building, sources say," Garafolo wrote on Twitter.

Garafolo reports that the coaches will likely remain with the Colts despite having no idea who their head coach will be. In addition, the Colts' next head coach won't have the luxury afforded most new head coaches — the freedom to pick his own assistants.

Well, that 49ers deal let's every other free agent QB know what the market will bear i.e. Cousins, Keenum and Bridgewater.

Nick Foles' fortunes will be interesting. I'm curious to see which teams approach Philly with trade offers for their Super Bowl winning MVP backup QB. cool

certainly will be awkward to have the QB who won the latest Super Bowl sitting on the bench next season.

I don't think he will be...someone will want him, and Philly will probably end up with a nice chess piece or two as a result.

I hope they keep him until they at least know if Wentz is 100%. Maybe they trade him later in the season around the trade deadline or something like that.

Suh signs with Rams for one year

One year is a good move. What a defense they have put together.

Source: Rams looking into trade with Giants for OBJ

Hmmm. Lot of varying opinions on OBJ in NY. His talent is unquestionable, but everything else about him is. Plus he wants a record breaking deal. Interesting stuff all around this offseason.

As a Rams fan, I'm pretty excited about their overall defense, especially considering it was their defense that excelled when I first became a fan back in the Fearsome Foursome days.

But as a Packers fan, I saw the downside of Ndamukong Suh when he played for the Lions—stepping and stomping on downed opponents. I was happy to see him leave the division for the Dolphins in 2015. His presence tempers my excitement about the current Rams squad.

Best,

Geoff

I don't think Suh has been hit with too many flagrant penalties since his days as a Detroit Lion.

The Rams have Suh on a 1-year deal. I doubt that he will go out and destroy their team and/or season. Also, he has to know his NFL caeer is almost done. cool

Yes, I'm sure he won't destroy the Rams or their season. And for that matter, I'd rather he were a Ram than Gregg Williams. But that doesn't stop me from having reservations about his behavior on the field.

He's been off my radar a bit since leaving the NFC North, but I do remember this incident last year:
