Of course, if you want that "older" sound, if it fits with your production or playing style then that's great whatever works for you.

I never get this type of post. By the same extension of thought, is Emo's Monster Moog sound "old sounding?" Joe Zawinul's synth sounds? Tony Banks' palette? I mean, they used REALLY old gear. The JV-1080 is touted as having been used on more hits than any other synth; are they now throwaways?

A synth is a synth. A sound is neither "old," or "young." It simply IS, and it's what the player does with it that makes it viable or not.

For my part I can't see any advantage of a vintage Roland XP synth compared to a modern Roland FA06 - except after touch. The FA also loads the old expansions if needed.

Most if not all JV boards are included in the SRX boards which again are included in the EXP-expansions on the Axial Website. All samples and patches from the JV's Keys of the 60*s and 70*s are on EXP-02: http://axial.roland.com/articles/exp-02-keys-collection/

That seals it, I made the right choice.
Aftertouch is definitely important for my MIDI'd ARP ProSoloist Rack - where would Tony Banks have been without it?
So the FA is a non-runner.

Yup. One of the reason aftertouch is so important to me. I can't play "The Cage" solo without it. The into to "Pirates" is another one.

Side Topic: Buddy of mine owns a Korg Poly 61. When it came out he paid around $1200 for it. He felt burned because the Poly 61M (with MIDI) came out right after and he saw the value of his drop immediately to around $650. Looking on eBay today I see his mint poly 61 is still fetching as high as $650/750. Not too bad.

OT but related - Tell me Joe, how is the action on the K61? I have the K73 and was considering whether the K61 would be good for lead synth playing?

I've had my XP-30 since it came out and still love it. Added both the Vintage Synth and Keys of the 60s/70s boards, and it's far from lacking for my needs. I know you can tweak the sounds and create your own, but I've pretty much used it bone stock as a ROMpler.

Can't see any reason to ever get rid of it, unless it goes totally toes-up. Heck, I'm pretty sure Rick Wakeman's kid Oliver still uses one in his rig, FWIW.

It's just a little mushy for my taste. I'm spoilt by my KX76 and the Kurzweil K2000VP- both are quite snappy on the upstroke, and that's a little lacking on the Kronos- but just a little. I'm sensitive to actions: I was spoiled on the Yamaha action in the M1 and the KX76 years ago.

But that's fine. I originally had a Kronos 88, and traded it with another member here with a 61 who was looking for an 88, and I have no regrets: it serves double-duty as a module AND a keyboard, so the sounds that might suffer from its keybed are played elsewhere, or of course, piano on my 88. You might not even notice the difference.

One of the keyboard players here only uses a JV-30 for all of his gigs.

He has more gigs than me and no one seems to complain about his sounds.

Makes you re-think things.

The xp30, xp80, jv2080 and all the JV cards was the heart of my rig years ago. Would use Emagic SoundDiver to program and layer the midi setup. Have not used any of it lately, but haven't brought myself to sell the stuff even after upgrading to 2 XV5080's and every SRX card. I like having access to the sounds, but I guess I could have access to the whole library with an Integra or FA? I'm just sort of familiar with the old system.

I think the Mac flavors of the Soundiver XP/JV programs stopped working years ago weren't they pre-OSX? Is there a version for Windows that still runs on newer Win systems?

SoundDiver was 32-bit for Windows and PowerPC on Mac before Apple bought Emagic (Logic) around 2002, and discontinued Soundiver. IIRC, Roland licensed a single instrument version of SoundDiver from Emagic to include with the JV1010. But the multi-instrument version has so many of the popular midi keyboards and hardware of the time.

You can still find it to download. Here's a good thread...
