Okay, so I'm sitting here in a cafe with a double espresso. I'm browsing Rick Wakeman videos when I'm supposed to be grading assignments. heh heh

Audio only, Rick is a great storyteller, recounting how Cat Steven's big hit came to be.

Don't know if it's been posted here before, but Rick is funny enough to warrant another go if it has.

Rick is an international treasure. I got to meet him at the first Moog Fest in 2004, which was also his 55th birthday. I even had a piece of his birthday cake! We discussed an old Keyboard article I had read where he talked about erasing all presets from a synthesizer and programming his own from scratch to fully understand the instrument. He was totally engaged in the conversation - a truly genuine person.

Very cool. But goddammit every time I hear somebody play like this it makes me want to just hang it up because I am so not worthy. But still I can never hear enough of these guys in somewhat unconventional settings as this.

It's a pleasure to listen to Rick tell stories. He does it so well. Here's another one I found while I checked out the OP's video:

So often, I forget that Rick was the guy on those Cat Stevens songs. Quite possibly his most soulful line, on that traditional song that was already so well-known but now is almost always thought of in the Cat Stevens context because that guy delivered.

Really funny. I would pay just to see Rick doing stand-up comedy.

I never knew that RW played piano on the Cat Stephens version, even though I've tried to cop that style whenever I've played MHBroken over the past 40 yrs! And since recently learning Bowie's Life On Mars, the simularity in piano style is suddenly evident. shocked

Actually, his rendition is sort of amazing, all sorts of color you don't usually hear.

My dad used to play a lot of Cat Stevens and I remember this story of Rick playing on it. If you listen there is a lot of Bach or Baroque influence on the track. I should try to learn this.

Thanks for posting. Enjoyed that. He came to Perth a few years back and did a two man show with Jon Anderson. Music was ok / good (it was prog rock Yes repertoire - they really needed a band) but the banter was great.

One of our digital radio stations here in the UK (BBC 6 Live) has had lots of Bowie features recently. R plays on the Hunky Dory album. They had some audio of him chatting about it. Don't know if it's UK only access - worth a listen if you're outside the UK but you can stream it.

Btw - Jon Anderson's voice was still stunning. He just sounded the same as he did on those 70s recordings. I was really impressed.
