It's a new year, so let's take a look ahead to the 2017 MLB season...

What will baseball have on tap in 2017?

And have a look back at a former great...

Son: Former Yankees pitcher Mel Stottlemyre, battling cancer, 'doing a lot better'

Here's to many more years of rewarding life for Mel Stottlemyre and an exciting year ahead for baseball!

Best,

Geoff

My Padres are in official heavy rebuilding mode. After a failed 2015 'All In' run they've finally stripped it down and loaded the farm. Should be a year both painful and more fun to watch as much of the young fielding talent has been brought up but we have no pitching.

I'm looking for a vastly improved Braves team moving into the new Sun Trust Park. They ended 2016 as the strongest team down the stretch, so hopefully they can build on that.

Cardinals are looking to improve on their defense from last year, which was sloppy and very atypical of what we've seen from them traditionally. Last year was a bit strange Ė for the first time in a few years, most of our regulars and starting pitchers were healthy. However, our pitching was worse than usual, and while our offense certainly hit (finally...it's taken a few years), we made too many defensive miscues that cost us some games.

Here's to hoping we get back to our usual pitching/defense. When we get that right, we typically win, regardless of the bats.

Ender Inciarte starts party at Braves' new park

Collects first catch, hit, run, homer, final out in SunTrust Park opener

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/224434038/braves-ender-inciarte-first-suntrust-park-star/

Braves are showing flashes of promise, but no consistency. R.A. Dickey and Bartolo Colon are good pickups and will eat a ton of innings. Freddie Freeman has been torrid - prolly the best player in MLB right now.

Synthaholic, I give you credit. You root for your Braves year in and year out. They just got swept by 2 division rivals back to back and you find something positive in that. Good for you. cheers

Then they swept my Padres in a 4 game series. Suntrust park is awesome by accounts of those who I trust who checked it out over the opening series. Congrats. If Braves stick to rebuilding they could be something great in a couple years. Sorry you have Matt Kemp though.

He hit a homer last night!

I lived in Atlanta in the 1980s and used to go to Fulton County Stadium all the time during the Dale Murphy days. Tickets were $1 or $2 for nose-bleed section. My roommate and I would go, sit a mile away without another fan in site and smoke joints for 4 innings. At that point, the ushers, wanting to go home as soon as the game was over, would shoo us out of that section and put us in primo seats along the 1st or 3rd base dugouts because TBS wanted the place to look full when they tightly panned across the crowd. We had a great thing going for a couple of years. Good times! smile I never made the trek to Turner Field once I moved away, but it was a well-regarded stadium, except for it's neighborhood - horrible parking options.

Since this is a keyboard-oriented forum, here's a relevant reply: Gotta give it up to the organist at Sun Trust Park. Never been there, but I've heard them play while listening to a Dodgers-Braves game on the radio. If anyone has more info on the organist, I'd sure like some more info on them.

Matthew Kaminski! He's a jazz organist and he is one of the pioneers of the crowd sourcing tunes on Twitter and being an active voice the fans can reach out to.

How 'bout them Indians! 22 straight wins. Only 4 away from the 1916 New York Giants' MLB-record run of 26 wins in a row.

I'm no fan, but I'd be perfectly happy with the Indians winning the World Series this year. It's been way too long.

Great article - thanks. I think Kyle Schwarber will come up big again for the Cubbies, and Max Scherzer is prolly the best big game player of all. Incredible pitching on display - future hall of famers?

Every year I LOVE the MLB post season more and more.

I'm going all in on the Astros this year. I hope that their model is something my own franchise is on its way to emulating.

Nats have to win today to force game 5 or they are out. Pitching has been fine, offence has been silent except for game 2.

DAMN that was the longest in playoff history?! 5 hours it was pretty insane. Didn't know it was a record breaker. I watched the first 2.5 hours then went to a fun social activity with my wife. We were leaving that activity of a couple hours and I was amazed to see they were in the bottom of the 9th still. Great game.

I'm beginning to wonder if I was right about that longest game stat. It has mysteriously vanished from ESPN's main page.

Edit: A Google search reveals that the longest playoff game in MLB history was three years ago. It lasted 18 innings:

Giants, Nats battle in longest playoff game in history

Perhaps tonight's game was the longest nine-inning contest? In any case, sorry for my mistake.

Best,

Geoff

Boy, Dallas Keuchel was tough last night. But I also thought he benefitted from an expanded strike zone below the knees. He didn't get a few of those calls early. It seemed the umpire adjusted.

Great game.

It was the longest 9-inning post-season game in history.

The Dodgers are going to be a tough competitor for the Cubs. Hopefully they can prevail. And if not, hopefully the Dodgers can beat the Astros or Yankees.

Turner's walk-off HR is 29 years to the day:

I can too, although I was listening to it on the radio on my way to my gig in Industry Hills at that moment. What an iconic home run in LA sports!

Thanks for sharing that, Dave. Great memory of Kirk Gibson from the Lasorda era. thu

May the Dodgers have similar luck this year.

I saw this fist pump, and Jeffrey Leonard's 'one flap down' home run trot for S.F. as being a turning point for MLB, in that it marked the end of the retaliation pitch for showing up the pitcher. Gibson never received even so much as a brushback pitch for his histrionics. I thought he should have been drilled in the back. But I'm a purist.

Before the season started, did anyone think that CC Sabathia would win a game in this year's American League Championship Series?

I'd say I'm not surprised, in the same way I wouldn't be surprised if Bartolo Colon stepped up with a big game. Gamers at heart, with a lot of pride.

I can't be the only one here who has a tough time coming to grips with the Houston Astros being in the AMERICAN League playoffs.
Took me a decade to quit thinking the Brewers were still in the American League, and now this. And then tear the Olde English "D" off of Justin Verlander, why don't you.
As the best moptop once sang, "Strange days indeed. Most peculiar, mama..."

Astros? You mean the Colt .45s? Oh yeah, that's right. They changed their name to the Astros. wink

Yep, times change. Their more recent NL to AL transition is still a little hard to get used to.

We're coming up on the 1 year anniversary of perhaps the greatest Tweet ever, from Verlander's girlfriend, supermodel Kate Upton. Hilarious, and definitely NSFW!

Dodgers slam Cubs to seal first World Series trip in 29 years

My condolences to our Cubs fans on Chicago's loss in the NLCS. They gave us a great World Series last year. I hope the Dodgers are now equally up to the task.

Rooting for a Dodgers/Yankees World Series now. The nostalgia factor would be through the roof!

I think Sabathia will prevail. IIRC, the Yankees are .500 on the road. That would make it their turn tomorrow night.

That said, the Yankees have outperformed themselves so far this postseason. Can they keep it up for one more game? Either way, it'll be fun to watch.

I've always believed that Yankee Stadium is a huge factor. The New York crowd is more intimidating to opposing players than any other city.

Congrats to our Astros fans. I'm glad Houston gets the uplift of a World Series after being ravaged by Hurricane Harvey a couple of months ago. As a Dodgers fan, I'm sorry I can't root for your first World Series titleóour 29 years has been too long of a drought. But if you do manage to win, I'll be happy for you nonetheless.

Condolences to our Yankees fans. Game Seven is a tough loss, but your team exceeded everyone's expectations this year. You're back!

It's really tough when your team has them at 3-1 or even 3-2 and then they come back on you and win it. I've experienced that all too often with Cardinals in the WS and NLCS. razz

I think it's a great thing for both cities but especially Houston after just digging out from the devastation of the Hurricane.

But I'm certainly rooting for Dodgers and hoping Kiki Vanderewghe can continue on his hot streak since coming out of retirement. Three HRs, who would've thought ! grin

It's not every year that you can say the two best teams got to the world series, but it's certainly true this year. Both are epicly talented and both are playing extremely well. I think the Astros are better, but anything can happen at this point.

The Yankees appear to me to be the smartest team in the majors, investing their vast resources into youth and player development. A sharp contrast with their past and with teams like my Giants that are weighed down with bad free agent contracts that sell preseason tickets while sucking the life blood out of the organization.

It was 103 degrees when the game started! Good thing both teams have some experience playing in heat.

Clayton Kershaw was as lights out as it gets. He gave a comparable performance to Sandy Koufax, who was watching in the stands. So much for the knock on Kershaw in the postseason!

Chris Taylor set the tone with his leadoff homer, and Justin Turner sealed the deal on victory number one with his home run.

Not too surprising to see the Dodgers win one at home. Justin Verlander should provide a bigger challenge tomorrow.

Best,

Geoff

Was so bummed I had a 3 hour jazz gig starting at 5 PM Pacific - same time tonight's game started. Turns out the game was on at the gig, and by the time I got home, there was still a solid 2 hours waiting for me to watch!

Yeah, both teams exhausted their bullpens in the lengthy score-fest. If I heard Joe Buck correctly, tonight's contest set a record for 3-run homers in one WS game.

I'm glad the Dodgers at least managed to win one game in Houston. I hope they're still alive after Game 6 on Halloween. The last thing I want to read is "Astros Bury Dodgers" Halloween puns.

Tonight I am rooting for Verlander, because his then-fiancee made the most hilarious protest ever about award non-selection when Verlander did not win the Cy Young Award in 2016. Definitely NSFW, so I'll let folks search for it on their own (you'll know when you've found it).

Go, Astros, go!!!!!!

...not that I actually give a damn about the team - I just want Verlander to get the ring that years of Detroit front-office incompetence stopped him from getting here.

Well, that was a pretty anticlimactic ending to what was otherwise a great series.

*Sigh* Maybe next year...

Congrats to the Astros and their fans for winning their first World Series. I'm glad that after all Houston had to endure with Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath, they have this win to help brighten their spirits.

Best,

Geoff

Thanks, Dave. It is certainly a brighter silver lining to focus on than most fans on the losing side of a championship have.

I don't blame Dave Roberts at all for starting Darvish, but you gotta wonder what would've happened if he gave Kershaw the start and asked him to carry the team to the win.

Darvish has a history of tipping pitches and of course that's the buzz on sports media today. One analyst I listen to regularly, former Met Cliff Floyd said today the best reader of tells he ever saw was Shawn Green, who while with the Mets, taught all he knew to none other than Carlos Beltran. Astros were salivating over facing Darvish again.

Regarding whether or not the Dodgers should have started Kershaw in game 7, there is a parallel to the 1965 World Series: In game 7 the Dodgers started their top ace Sandy Koufax on 2 days rest, after he had pitched a complete game victory in game 5. The result was that Koufax pitched a complete game shutout in game 7.

One of the most exciting Series I've ever seen. Incredible that in addition to his 4 homers, George Springer set a new WS record with 29 total bases.

Lifelong Dodger fan here, Los Angeles born and raised. Been a fan since '77. Steve Garvey was my childhood hero.

Game 7 was a heartbreaker. But I saw it coming early on in the game. I also didn't fault Roberts for starting Darvish (when he's awful, he's awful, and when he's good, he's GOOD), but there should have been an instant failsafe at the first sign of breakdown. Should have had Wood or Kershaw come in once he gave up his first run, but they brought Morrow in waaaay too late. Coulda woulda shoulda.

Disappointed but not depressed. I'm actually grateful. Proud of my boys in blue and they allowed me to fulfill a dream I had since I was a kid: GO TO A WORLD SERIES GAME. On Sunday, prompted by the Dodgers' early lead, I plunked down $1,500 on a ticket, hoping to see them clinch their first title in 29 years in front of my eyes. You only live once.

But when they lost Game 5, it was too late, I had already bought my Game 6 ticket. Even if they won, I wouldn't have the privilege of seeing them celebrate on the field. But still, I made the best of it.

It's the same stadium I've gone to for 40 years, the same stadium I paid $10 for a ticket to just a few months ago. But the atmosphere and energy was different. Fans were LOUD. We cheered every Astros strike and high-fived each other at every Astros out. And when we scored a run, we jumped and shouted. And when Joc Pederson hit that home run, WE WENT NUTS.

We won the game 3-1 and after the game no one wanted to leave. And in fact, the stadium staff, which normally kicks us out of our seats 15 minutes after the last out, didn't do that. No one wanted to leave! And there was a loooooong line to the gift shop to buy souvenirs. I bought a WS t-shirt and a program. This wasn't just a Dodger game. It was Disneyland, Christmas, New Year's Eve and heck...it was literally Halloween!

My dream of going to a World Series game had come true. Thank you, Dodgers!

Sorry for your disappointment and glad you got to experience a lifelong dream. $1500 isn't too much for that. In fact, I seriously considered taking Gino Vannelli's privately tutored Master Class a few years ago - for the paltry price of $1500.

I'm so glad to hear you were able to be there, elsongs! That may have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I wish I could have joined you.

I just missed the Sandy Koufax era and had to make do with reading a book about him while watching Don Drysdale's final years on the mound. I believe Steve Garvey joined the Dodgers just after Drysdale retired.

Best,

Geoff

Thanks, though there's still a good chance to going back to the World Series next year as the roster won't be changing very much in 2018.

All teams have various generations of fans. Koufax and Drysdale were before my time (though I'm more familiar with Drysdale as an announcer), while I got to see Sutton, Valenzuela, Hershiser, Nomo, Gagne and Kershaw (I went to Kershaw's first game in June, 2008!). Of course, Vin Scully was there for all of them.

Wow, that is so cool, elsongs. What a dream. I'm hoping I get to experience the same with Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers here in a few years.

I had not realized that Garvey had joined the Dodgers as early as 1969, so I looked it up - he was a September 1969 call-up to the major leagues, while Drysdale's last game was in early August 1969.

I still recall what Drysdale (by then a baseball announcer) said in 1985 about Doc Gooden. 1985 was Gooden's second year, and this was the year he set the baseball world on fire (24-4 and a 1.53 ERA). Since Gooden was only 20, everyone was wondering how much better he might become, but Drysdale said this was as good as Gooden would ever get.

Interesting article on Darvish tipping his pitches in Game 7.

It explains a lot if true....

Of course it is. At that level, teams are pretty much matched up. Tipping points are things like body language, as I think I alluded to a few posts up.

Can't wait till April, though.

I wonder if Clayton Kershaw's wife has a twitter account. Kershaw had a lower ERA than Scherzer, more wins, and fewer losses. Scherzer had more strikeouts, but strikeouts are just a means to an end.

Scherzer took the award on WHIP. He pitched 25 more innings than Kershaw.

Walk + Hits/Innings Pitched. Thatís the equation. This is a stat that should never be overlooked. It exemplifies how talented and controlled a pitcher is. A pitcher whose WHIP hovers around one displays excellent command and low BAA (batting average against).

While I am a Yankees fan, as a baseball fan I was glad to see Altuve with the MVP. Considered in isolation, Judge's offensive stats would be more impressive (more runs scored, more RBIs, and a higher OPS), but Judge is an outfielder and Altuve is a second baseman. It is expected to get more offense from outfielders, so the offense produced by a second baseman or shortstop needs to be given a premium in assessing that player's value.
