Alright, Geoff Grace, it's January 1, 2017. I've waited all I can waits, and I can't waits no more. wink

Korg Kronos LS - we should get a closer look at this beeotch for sure.

Viscount. In addition to the Physis H and K models I'm thinking they'll be showing their SMART line.
There's a SMART 20 and 30. Looks like attempt to be competitive with the Casio PX-160/360.
http://www.viscountinstruments.us/digital-pianos/smart.html

SMART Brochure

They'll also be showing the KeyB Legend.

Some company called ZYLIA has a cancelling mic that let's you record a rehearsal/performance by plopping the one ZYLIA mic in the middle of the room and it will multitrack with separation.

LOL! You beat me to it by less than two hours. But no worries.

Traditionally, I've waited until the beginning of the week of the show to start the thread; but in recent years, manufacturers have leaked their announcements in advance of NAMM to create an Internet buzz. The question then becomes, "How far in advance of NAMM is an announcement still a NAMM announcement?" In my opinion, with the show still over two weeks away, the first of the month is the earliest I could justify starting a thread—especially since last month's announcements could validly be considered as holiday announcements.

No matter, Elmer. As your enthusiasm in this area rivals mine, it's just as fitting that you should start the thread. I'll simply add my traditional comments at this point and later post here as I would have in the thread I would have created.

Is it true the new Korg Kronos LS does not have aftertouch? If it does have aftertouch I am absolutely buying one. If it does not have aftertouch I’m gonna suck on the barrel of a gun.

What's with the lack of aftertouch on some of these keyboards? Does it really save that much money to leave it out?

It's a deal killer. For example, the lack of aftertouch on the Kurzweil Artis lost them a sale. Speaking of Kurzweil, the lack of a semi-weighted keyboard and sequencer on the Kurzweil Forte lost them a sale as well.

This year I'd love to see a lighter weight Forte 7 with a semi-weighted (as on PC361) keyboard; 76 notes A to C range; with an improved (over PC3) sequencer that takes advantage of the better display and can do different time signatures and combine song sections.

Keep the shorter length with pitch/mod wheels over the keyboard.

For the cherry on top, add back the PC3's ribbon and breath controller inputs. Support _polyphonic_ aftertouch, loads of user sampling space and improve the UI, and I'll be sorely tempted to buy two.

I am curious to know if Casio is going to use their current Celviano sample in an affordable portable any time soon.

I played the Celviano last year and it was radically different than the portable PX-5 or anything else they had. I know someday I will have a Casio... I just wonder if this is the year.

I would think the Roland Jupiter 80 is due for a refresh or replacement. But in this market it may no longer make sense for them to design expensive flagship synths.

If they were to come out with one, I'd be interested, but it would have to frigging brilliant to lure me away from my resolve to make 2017 the year of the laptop.

many players prefer not to have aftertouch on 88 note weighted keyboards as they use them solely for AP's and Ep's. Even though aftertouch is not assigned to these sounds the keyboard dip that aftertouch requires is not welcomed.

I was set to buy a Jupiter 50 - "The Ultimate Performance Keyboard" - until I found it lacked Aftertouch. (insert *facepalm* here)

I also prefer 76 note keyboards over 73 note, but I like the traditional E-G range.

Does anyone know if there will be any new Arranger Keyboards or modules at NAMM? I'm particularly interested in a new version of the Roland BK7M or a rack version of the Korg PA4.

Uli Behringer gives sneak peak at development of Behringer's drum machine focused on the sound of the 808/909 over at GearSlutz.

Quote:
Dear all,

first of all I like to wish you a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.

Sometime in July this year I announced we are looking into developing analog as well digital drum machines. I thought I would now share with you aspects of the development process.

At this stage our main focus is on sound creation and for this purpose we resurrected the highly regarded 808 and 909 analog drum machines from the '80's.

Attached are the pics of the first evaluation boards that allow us to study and compare the sound of analog drum instruments. However, our intention is not to clone these products but to evaluate analog sound generation and add a great user interface and sequencer.

I can tell you that the team is having lots of fun listening to these drum sounds that greatly contributed to amazing music in the past. It is actually not surprising that people gravitate to analog sounds as it is the imperfection that evokes emotions. Perhaps it is the fact that we humans are analog, too:-)

While we are far away from releasing a finished product, we thought we would get you involved in this enjoyable design process.

As always we love to hear your opinions.

Music Pro

https://www.etymotic.com/consumer/hearing-protection/mp915.html

"The ultimate in hearing protection. Designed for musicians who want to hear naturally, need protection when hearing is at risk, and want to avoid the inconvenience of removing earplugs to hear.

Adaptive Noise Reduction: Music•PRO circuitry automatically changes output levels as sound input levels change. Hearing is natural, as if nothing is in the ears, until sound exceeds safe levels. As sound levels increase, earplugs gradually provide 9- or 15-dB sound reduction. Natural hearing is restored when sound returns to safe levels.

Advantages

Provides either 9-dB or 15-dB protection at the flip of a switch
Clear communication
Instantaneously protects from loud, percussive sounds (e.g., cymbal strike)
Enhances soft sounds if desired
Ready-fit eartips; custom molds are not required"

Interesting that a new USB interface does not say whether it is USB 2 or USB 3. Roland's specs refer to "hi speed" and USB specs refer to "hi speed" as being USB 2.
