I agree, congrats, Bob.
Whether his lyrics are really LITERATURE is another question, but he did write things that were (and still are) important to a lot of people.

I just posted this news on that OTHER guitar forum.

In essence I said, "Bob's been a HUGE influence on both aspiring musicians AND already established singer/songwriters. NOW all he needs is that LONG overdue Gershwin award."

Congradulations indeed! smile

Funny thing. As of today he wont answer or return notification calls from the nobel people. Seems like he doesnt want to accept the prize. Without getting political , im not sure i would either. Who am i kidding? Award me, notice me, LOVE ME.

There IS some money given with each Nobel prize as I understand. Not sure of how much( I once heard it was around $50,000), so it can't be MONEY that's holding up Bob.

Dylan is on tour right now and may be a little bit busy and hard to reach at the moment. I think he will accept the award before the award ceremony in December...

Oh yeah. I heard he was "wheezing it up" with those other fogeys in that "Desert Trip" thing. grin

A lotta "snow" at that event, if ya get my drift( no pun intent), and NOT the kind there USED to be a lot of at their concerts. wink

Dylan knows about the nobel prize. The nobel people have talked to his office people and left several messages. Plus dont you think everybody he bumps into says "hey, i heard about ......". If dylan is avoiding them he is doing it on purpose.

Uh, am I missing something here?

The "snow" I was referring to was the "snow on the roof" that most(or all) the performers and likely most of the people in the audience now have. grin

The OTHER "snow" I mentioned was something ELSE that used to permeate the scene at many concerts back in the "day". wink Nowadays, most of those folks probably snort METAMUCIL! grin

Well Cher just kicked off her Vegas tour yesterday at the age of 70 and was in the news...she has the advantage of coloring her hair. Not a lot of snow on her roof top, but she still looks good at her age. I give old Bob credit along with his "other fogeys" for still being out there on stage...I'll send old fogey credits/kudos out to the Stones for still being out there and rocking it too! Sorry about misinterpreting the "wheezing it up" concept... crazy

Remember that video The Dead did for their song "Touch Of Grey" with the skeleton marionettes? My daughter, going about her housework with the TV on(sound muted) saw it in the corner of her eye and said, "I thought it was a STONES video!" grin

A bit in today's paper quoting PAUL SIMON who said he might step back from touring, but has NO plans on retiring. So, there ya go.

A lot of old fogeys, looking for something to do or to augment their meager pensions find work in fast food joints.

Can you imagine pulling up to the drive-thru window at Mickey D's and having your Filet o' Fish handed to you by PAUL SIMON? Or BOB DYLAN or NEIL YOUNG or even BILL WYMAN, who turnes 80 today? grin

My brother in law got off a good one on his grandson.

The kid called him an "old fart" in reply to something, and my brother in law said, "You say that like it's a BAD thing. But, a FRESH fart smells as bad as an OLD one, if not WORSE." grin

Just remember....the OLDER a fart gets, the less it STINKS. Remember THAT, you YOUNG FARTS! grin

AIEeee!

Don't want to sound like a prig, but....

"TOO" is synomynous with "also" plus in some cases, "more".

"To" usually indicates a movement or direction, or also indicating the result of an action.

For example;

Bobby D's "too" busy.--

Joni Mitchell is one of those artrist's I don't listen "to".

THANK you, "Grammar Rock". wink

I know how to use "too" and "to" and put too and too together two, and I really don't need the Grammar Rock to point out the errors. If I pointed out your BS typos and errors, I wouldn't have time too get anything else posted... crazy

No, I understand....I too suffer from the "Grammar Nazi Syndrome". It's a curse, really. We have no choice but to point out errors, no matter how much we try to hold back. Please don't hate us for it!

OK...I do not hate anyone Astring, to include you and Whitefang that suffer from the "Grammar Nazi Sydrome." I hope you will enjoy each others company and find forgiveness in your hearts before they come for you.

ps. I have always felt bad about the title of this thread as being "Congratulation" instead of "Congratulations"...does anybody really care?

I'm sure if Astring and I really WERE grammar "nazis" we'd have made it a point to mention it.

I can't speak for Astring, but in MY case, it goes to how I was brought up. I also will point out that my stickling about grammar as far as I'M concerned is a perpetual "work in progress". Was also told by others that no matter how smart somebody is, that if they TALK like a dumb-ass, they'll be THOUGHT of as one. And on the other side of the coin, a dumb-ass can be thought of as smart ONLY based on his SOUNDING so. It's all based on the old saying, "If you can't BLIND them with your BRILLIANCE, then DAZZLE them with your BULLSHIT!" wink

I've gotten a LOT of mileage out of that. I also live by the credo; "Never have a method to your madness without a madness to your METHOD." grin

In my case, it might be an attempt to avoid this place from becoming another Facebook type thing, where when in my short time on that grotto, I've seen the word "there" used in place of "they're" and "their". and also "to" used in place of "too" and also, of all things, "TWO"!

To get back on track:

I read somewhere Dylan cited "prior commitments" as a reason for not attending. I didn't however, see anything in the item I read it in about him losing the award if he doesn't show up in some allotted amount of time. Could be true though, since I've never have had to or will need to be concerned about proper Nobel prize decorum. grin

Yeah. So much so he often made stuff up about himself and experiences he'd had. There's one story where he says he played a burlesque type place where, "....I'd go on between the strippers and the comics and sing my folkie tunes. One time a guy in a clown suit rolled up and pinched me on the cheek. I kicked him in the nuts and no one saw. The rest of the comics left me alone after that."

I read somewhere later on that the incident never really happened.

Well, I think Dylan was just making fun of people who had nothing better to do than to ask him dumb questions. In this case, I think it's rather obvious he was just kidding. Though to starstruck idol worshipers, who KNOWS what's obvious to them??

I don't do things like that on a REGULAR basis, but have been KNOWN to, LOL. Especially with junior Pharisees in churches.....

Could be too that over a longer period he got around to settling his personality and attitude. The thing I mentioned came rom some old paperback "bio" that was printed in '65. And possbly info gathered over the previous couple of years. His first Playboy interview was around that time too, and just as cryptic and sarcastically evasive. I ran across a copy of it somehow and where in the mid '70's and read his second Playboy interview later that decade. BIG difference. He seemed more down to Earth and forthcoming

Yes, it's true, most people "live and learn" and "mellow" (I actually hate that word, LOL) as they get older.
But in all fairness, people in public life learn defense mechanisms, sometimes because they feel they HAVE to.... like how the Beatles dealt with the press with humor in their early days. Because they had no particular to share their personal feelings with these people who after all, were not their "friends".

I think the Bob Dylan and Beatles interviews can be pretty fun to watch now and then. They have that humor and flippant attitude trying to be super cool in front of the cameras that I enjoy LOL! cool

Bob's cool & all but he sought fame & media attention, even to the point of creating several false versions of his past so later when writers may've been skeptical of him in some ways, who to blame.
At other times he did have justification for sniping at those who didn't get his work or were unable to keep up w/ the hipper than hip crowd he rode herd on---or reverting to "gramma's grammar Nazi" mode, on which he rode herd.

As per lang, I usedta suffer from that malady, but eventually came to realize that language has always been a fluid, evolving thing & it always will be.
To play w/ lang is one of conversation's & writing's great pleasures & really a way of adding style &, in some ways, intimacy to communication.
Teenage & carny slang, etc.

As Professor Fred McDowell noted in his definitive 1959 work, I Do Not Play No Rock & Roll, "Who's never get it ?"

I suppose to some, it depends on which direction the "fluid" flows. If it flows where THEY don't like, they throw a tantrum.

Bob's lyricism was always heavy on abstact word play and creating uniquely vivid mental images. And sometimes that tendency would show up in his speech. That's when those interviews get interesting. As for The Beatles....

For years, writers and other critics always foisted the "witty one" banner on John Lennon. Sure, he had a quick and sharp wit, but ALL of them in their own way, showed they too, had that "rapier" wit.

I suppose some know more abt tantrums than others (whatever that has do do with this) but here's something to mull over (or, "grammar nazis" watchin ?) over which to mull when putting Bob up against John.

John 'n' Bob inna back of Lennon's car (watch fer the look at Alf Bickner!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5YLdHG83U0

That was filmed for prospective Dylan documentary but for some reason (who can imagine ?) left off....

Sometimes it's best to know when to just dial back.

There's long been the "legend" that The Beatles introduced Bob to the potential of an electric rock band approach to music, and Bob introduced The Beatles to marijuana.

This little bit of film seems to support the latter. wink

Larry, that's cool & all [great crisp drums & a very pop radio sound + expressive BD vox] but what's it's "formulation" ?
Couldn't find anything at the YT thread.
However, issat really Bob ?

For that toon, however, didja ever hear the one on SELF PORTRAIT ?
Bob Dyl (we call him that cause he's such a sourpuss) at Isle of Wight 1969 forgot the lyrix [honestly who could remember them all, anywhat) & sang the same line 3X----then decided to use it as an example of his performing on his own alb !
grin

If ya'ain't heard it.,, y'll have to find a copy b/c they seem to've scrubbed it from the Net.
It's worth hearing just for the fact of the mistake I mentioned.

However that Idjit Wind track above's a great way to respond to them who're sure they know what when they don't.

I didn't look into who was signing and playing it, but they did a very decent job. A lot of Dylan's YouTubes have been pulled. I did like the cool pictures and the lyrics during the slide presentation...definitely shows Bob's poetic side. His voice changes with the times, how much he drinks/smokes or whatever and I'm sure it doesn't sound as sweet as the one in the video LOL! But, I really love Bob's voice, while many others can't stand it and say he can't sing. I even love it when he can't sing LOL! Yeah I used to have the album Self Portrait, but it's been a long time since I listened to it on vinyl... cool

Hard for me to pick a favorite, been a Dylan"freak" for so long, but gun to head, for lyrics, I'd pick this:

https://youtu.be/mYajHZ4QUVM

But the studio version does sound better.

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/bob-dylan-deli...news-music.html <BUMP> So, Bob Dylan delivered the required lecture for his Nobel prize...A very interesting and historical lecture for his fans! Of which, I am... cool

ps. I went back and listened to the full lecture. Bob Dylan is nothing less than a genius. He laid out a life in my past, present and future, as an old Viet Nam Grunt War Vet, and no one could have done it better than Dylan...Everything he said is true IMHO. I would encourage all of my brothers and arms to listen to the full lecture, even if they are not poetic. I wrote some good poetry in the field as I had nothing better to do in the long hours between enemy contacts and firefights. None of it could hold a candle from what I'm hearing my favorite poet say. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9oakm9-vjo <---I will listen to Bob's lecture many times and this my favorite theme song by Dire Straits. I would encourage my brothers in arms to do like wise... cool

+1,000,000 on the "genius"!

Me and no doubt countless guys from my generation can relate to what Bob said in that lecture. Especially the section when he talks about how what he's read in books shaped a lot of how he thinks of life and the world around him due to them giving him many points of view about life in general and the different people in it and how they handled different situations. I used to have the kind of job at the plant that allowed me plenty of free time I used by sitting by myself reading various books. I used to feel dismay for all the guys who laughed at me and told me it was all a waste of time.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not putting myself on the same level as Dylan. But I'm only stating I can relate to how he absorbed all that information and "vernacular" from folk music and I'd assert that his reaction to Buddy Holly and his music IS similar to MY reaction to HIM and HIS music! I've mentioned several times that Bob's song "It's Alright, Ma(I'm Only Bleeding)" captured EVERYTHING going through my mind at the time but couldn't ARTICULATE as thoroughly as Bob's lyrics had. You can probably "google" the lyrics( if you aren't that familiar with them) and see what I mean.

I too, wrote tons of poetry over the years, some of it good, some of it crap, but ALL of it influenced by his "free verse" style of poetic writing. He influenced FAR more than my music or poetry.

I'm familiar with the lyrics, I just can't remember all of them. That is one thing that amazes me about Dylan. He has written millions of lyrics and he has instant recall on all of them! Me, I have trouble remembering 20 songs or so...I'm going to make it a point to read Moby Dick, All Quiet On The Western Front and The Odyssey one of these days and then go back and listen to his book reports again. The way he breaks these books down is very profound...

I like the song Tangled Up In Blue and Like a Rolling Stone for real life poetry and Desolation Row lyrics and Ballad of a Thin Man for painting picture fantasies with words...There are tons that I can mention and I know you are focused on I'm Only Bleeding and do not care for Thin Man. That's what gives his fans the ability to pick and choose what they like and he gives us so much to draw from. Rolling Stone is still my favorite...

I know there are some that do not like Dylan's vocals, but I love listening to him. I have to admit that not everything he does is pleasing to the ear though LOL!

I'm really happy with the lecture and I am so glad they made it available to everyone out there...I love the way he singled out Buddy Holly as his inspiration, it reminds me of my singling out Elvis as mine. I'm not a fan of Holly but I can see how Dylan was inspired by him as a young kid. There is so much out there by these guys that you can pick and choose what you like...For Holly, I like That'll Be The Day...Those that don't like Dylan will hopefully still find something of interest in the lecture, as did the Nobel Prize folks... cool
