In a new band that I really like. Blues.

All great musicians and I am learning a ton. One thing I need to learn to get out of my head is as follows:

The guitarist and leader has a CD out that is very good. Him and a series of very good studio musicians. The bass players on the CD are monsters... the basslines are some of the best I ever heard. When I compare my playing to theirs it doesn't match up. I feel like I know a secret... I am not good enough to play in this band.

Any suggestions on how to get back to the place where I just play what I play and not worry about it? It is messing with me.... I work hard at improving and enjoy the challenge.... but...

Unrelated maybe, but my management has a phrase they like to say...

"Get comfortable being uncomfortable"

In my musical journey, I found I've grown the most when I've stepped out of my comfort zone. Maybe this is that opportunity for you. I would say DON'T just go back to what you would typically do, but use it as an opportunity to grow.

Just my $0.02

trying... sometimes I find myself walking the bass with abandon... thinking... I wonder how this sounds. No one says it is bad (or good). I never really did that much before.

I normally have too much confidence... not this time.. hahahahahaha

You were chosen to be in this band, so you must be doing something right. Play as much as can of the recorded bass lines and as you get comfortable with the songs you will be able to add bits and pieces.

This, unless you suspect they hired you for your good looks/hot body.

Surround yourself with greatness, and rise up to their level. I'm sure you're doing well with them.

Playing with musicians that are "better" than you will make you better. I am always playing with people better than myself.

Snap out of it!

Seriously, stop doing that. You can't play like them? Guess what -- they can't play like you either.

And playing in a band that's a notch above where you are is a fantastic opportunity to stretch out and get better.

No go get 'em, cowboy!

In almost every hobby and interest I have, I try to selfishly surround myself with people who are 1-2 units of measure better than me. It's the best way to improve. Chess, Texas Hold'em, Warhammer, Call of Duty, Graphic Design, and of course, Music.

Use your temporary lack of self-confidence to sponge up learning moments and don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Just be sure to pay it forward.

You're welcome. But I'd prefer that we just stay friends.

Go get 'em, killer.

Friends with benefits, that is.

Benefits such as, "Will you lend me your tuner? Or your vintage bass?"

Man good luck with the gig. My advice would be get a line that works that you can deliver and just evolve to the stuff that you'd like to play!

Play the music, play the parts, prepare yourself, and have fun.

You got this.
