Bass solo? I'll reply right after I go to the bathroom, get another beer, and make a phone call.

That Pedro Aznar song was good, the solo was really great. Thanks for the tip!

It's hard to pick a favorite, I have favorites in each genre, and then there's the "lead bass", or the song that is made by a unique bass line, without which the song really would not be so memorable or catchy. This month in BP there's a great article about Graham Maby, who is an example of what I am talking about. Sure he gets some incredible solos, but his lines made Joe Jackson's songs stick hit and stick.

If I need a solo, let me go to the source of a lot of what we call rock'n'roll, Mr Willie Dixon

This is the first that came to mind. When Santana's Marathon album came out, "Stand Up/Runnin'" got lots of airplay on one of Detroit's rock stations for a while. "Stand Up" was ok, but I'd sit through it just to hear David Margen kill it on "Runnin'." Thanks to YouTube, you can just skip straight to it. smile

Paul Goddard was definitely an ace player, even that short solo in "Champagne Jam" is outstanding.

Bass solos, to be appealing to anyone who's not a bass player, should be short and sweet. That way they add a touch of awesome to the song. John Entwistle on his various incarnations of My Generation comes immediately to mind.

I think the pinnacle may be Matt Freeman on Rancid's Maxwell Murder.

That was my first noticeable introduction to fretless bass, and a solo I love to this day.

yeah, most bass "solos" should really have the drummer backing up the player.
This song seemed to me to be one long bass solo, Mars Cowling just plays whatever come to mind, all the while pushing the song along.

I recently heard this on the radio, and Juan Nelson's solo floored me, but that's not a surprise.

I can't believe I did not put Bill Church in my previous post (double stops with a pick, get me every time.)

Jerry Peak on Cruise Missile. Don't bother to watch the video: they edited it out! That was one of many realizations how little interest there is in bass solos. Even bass players don't care about them.

So I quit and now I play keyboards.
