Hammond instruction book?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, yes I know that listening is the best way to learn :) ....however I would like to get a 'how to play Hammond organ' style book to get my Hammond chops up to speed. Google brings up Limina's 'Hammond organ complete', is there anything else I should be looking at? Did a search on this site as well, but didn't really come up with anything. I'm a reasonable-level pianist, reading music is no problem etc.

Any input appreciated, thanks.

Beauty in the B by Mark Vail is good, but only has a section or two on playing techniques. It's more about the organs themselves.

I'd second the two recommendations above. I have a few others in my bookcase at home. I'll have a look this evening and update you. There are only about 5/6 actual instruction manuals. Most of them deal with history but there are a few.

Here are some more that i've accumulated over the years:

The Hammond Organ - Beauty in the B: Mark Vail

The Hammond Organ: An Introduction to the Instrument and the Players Who Made It Famous by Scott Faragher

Classic Hammond Organ: Know the Players, Play the Music by Steve Lodder

Joey DeFrancesco's Concepts for Improvisation by Joey DeFrancesco

101 Hammond B-3 Tips: Stuff All the Pros Know and Use by Brian Charette (as quoted by DenCV above)

Ultimate Blues Organ Riffs (Book/Audio CD) by Andrew D. Gordon (Author)

Then some DVD's with accompanying material:

Blues and Rock Techniques for Hammond Organ - David Bennet Cohen

Brian Auger -- Hammond B-3 Master: Learn Keyboard Techniques from the Legend Himself - Brian Auger

Tony Monaco's site here has tonnes of stuff. I find his DVD's really helpful and you can dip in an out as needs be. And he gives one-on-one lessons over the net which is well worth considering. But you need to know what you want out of the lesson otherwise you could spend a whole hour just chatting about the Hammond!
