Many of you sort of know me on here. My primary instrument is keys, but I've been doing a lot more bass lately, mostly AEB. Been enjoying it immensely. I also play guitar and sax.

So I never really called myself a "bass player" and always felt when I was playing out, if a "real" bass player was there, he's know I was a fake or something. Well the last few gigs I've had bona fide bass players come up and compliment me. .....of course, usually it's my tone and asking what kind of bass I play. I.e. "You suck, but your tone is awesome!" Lol.

But still, I'll take what I can get. One guy was pretty surprised that I wasn't a "bass player". And said "well you used all 4 strings", lol...and that guy was a bass player of 50+ years.

So I guess maybe I'm starting to feel my oats enough to call myself a "bass player". I think the AEB brings it out. Played a festival to thousands today, and a guy made it a point to come up and ask "are you really playing acoustic bass? That sounds awesome!". I guess he though maybe it was recorded or something? No didn't quite get that one, but he loved it.

To me, bass is not a 'technical expertise' instrument, although knowing how to do something complex adds that particular tool or tools to your arsenal. I see it as a 'feel' instrument. Some of the best bass lines I've ever heard have been so simple that any first-year player could have done them, yet are so complex that I can't imagine the melodic thought-process that developed it.

Perfect example: Brian Wilson's bass-line on the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows". Incredibly complex, yet sounds so simple that you almost think the song was written around the bass-line. It's the perfect 'feel' line - it's exactly what the song needs, no more and no less.

If you approach playing as not a technical wizard with no 'feel', but as a player who can add just enough to define the song, then yes - you're a bass player.

Oh, gear helps, but is not required.

Play. Just play.

Paul McCartney played guitar before he played bass. He also plays--damn well--keys and the drums. And sings. Is he a "real bass player?" John Paul Jones plays keys, mandolin, guitar, and bass. Is he a "real bass player?" John Entwistle's first instrument was the French Horn and he played horns on Who recordings. Was he a "real bass player?" Geddy Lee plays keys, sings--well, you get the idea.

If you can play the right bass notes at the right time to support the song, you're a bass player.

I cannot play keys so I am not a keyboard player.

I can strum a handful of chords on a guitar and ukulele. I do not consider myself a guitarist or ukuleleplayer by any means. Why not? Because I can't even begin to play an actual song on either instrument. I'd be useless in a band context and have zero skills for accompanying myself in a soloformat.

You play bass in a band, therefore you are a bass player. A REAL bass player. Be proud. We accept you - one of us (to coin a Marillion phrase)

I'm here to provide the low point at which one can be considered a real bass player. By my criteria, you may be at least 47X a real bass player.

Anyone who can actually play bass is a bass player.

That doe not include guitar players who play bass but actually really suck at it.

I think Geddy Lee was originally a guitar player, too, until he came to his senses.

Lots of people were guitarists first until they discovered the power of the bass.
Carol Kaye and Tommy Cogbill come to mind.

I learned guitar after learning bass and have only rarely played it on gigs. So I guess I'm not a real guitar player which is probably a good thing.

Playing with this band I think has really helped me up my game. Since I never had formal bass lessons (just piano and sax), I think I probably started with not the greatest technique, and also tended to rely a lot on open strings. I've definitely learned a lot since then though in terms of using patterns within certain hand positions to open up a lot more possibilities, and I feel like I've really tightened up my technique. It's amazing how much faster you advance playing regular 4 hour gigs as opposed to just practicing at home. And I think playing the acoustic so much has made me better on the electric as well.

I'd say knowing how to play keys and sax helps put you ahead of many so called bass players because you can bring those skills to the table. Like theory and phrasing. Don't sweat it. You're a bass player.

At the moment, you're more of a real bass player than Flea. Good grief, this is awful.

OMG. The people in the arena actually cheered for that?
Lots of wrong notes and I would say that was disrespectful to our anthem.

If they wanted Flea there, they should have had the band come out at halftime and play "Magic Johnson". Maybe that would inspire the Lakers to actually win a game...and Kobe to actually pass the ball.

I'll admit, I've never been a big fan. He's a good bass player, and who hasn't grooved to "Give It Away"?

But I think is proof that all that "Flea is a god" business is BS.

These guys, OTOH, nailed it:

Yes you are a bass player. Now, stand quietly in the background and play your heart out knowing that only another bass player may notice your tone, what you are playing or anything short of an absolute disaster.

I had to stop after he kicked in the overdrive. Not that I do not like distortion, but I cannot stand going pointlessly up and down the scales like a mad man.

As a fellow multi-instrumentalist I understand your inner struggle. It has to do with levels of competency and how comfortable we feel performing with various instruments.

However, Paul McCartney is a good example of how I see it. Whenever I see him perform I just see a musician making use of whatever tool (instrument) is at hand. In the end an instrument is just the interface that allows a musician to share the music inside his/her head with the rest of the world.

In that light I'd say if you're playing 4-hour shows on bass (and keys and sax and whatever) then you're a bass player, keyboardist, sax player ... musician.

Here's the deal. After the 2nd set you walk up to the bar and say "I'd like a diet coke please." If she says "that'll be 2 bucks" then you're a real bass player.

So a great thread. My transition has been the other way. I've always thought of myself as a bass player. I was a bit shell-shocked when someone introduced me to their child as "he's a singer".

But I'm still a bass player.
